Carrie and Danielle: Who in your own life would you give the title of “Hostess With the Mostess”?

  • Terry Fitzgerald · 11 months ago
My wife - hands down. Every little thing is attended to. It takes her days to plan, shop, arrange, cook, decorate etc. Always a work of art -

Also my Grandmother. She was the best hostess. Everyone felt happy and relaxed in her home. I miss her a lot. Especially around the holidays. Although I have taken over the holiday party type stufff, I will never be comparable to my dearest Grandmaman. She could do anything...

    Fashionable Fun

Though she passed away in September, my hands-down answer is my paternal grandmother. She would host holiday dinners for 100+ people. We would have Passover seders with over 75 people every year. Until she was in her 70s, she cooked it all herself. And, what's more, she made it look effortless. Whenever I think of a graceful, welcoming, wonderful hostess, I think of her.

    Cheers to grandmothers!

my sister Karen, beyond all shadow of a doubt. She throws dinner parties when her children have birthdays. Cooks whatever they request, from scratch, including sides and desserts. Keeps the beverages flowing, keeps the jazz going, all the while remaining in the background so everyone can relax and enjoy themselves and so her child feels so loved and surrounded by love. If love was a meal, Karen's would be plentiful and unconditional.

Sooo easy to answer - my fabulous friend Patti (Elegant Precious), who gives exquisite attention to every detail. She raises entertaining to a fine art. And her best gift is making every guest feel very, very special. I pride myself on my own hostessing skills, but it's only because I always think, "What would Patti do?".

You should get one of those rubberized bracelets with the letters stamped on it
    ... "W W P D"

My mother. And my dad. They're hosts with the most - they have more parties than anyone I know!!!

My sister-in-law. Last year she was listed as one of the top 10 female lawyers in the U.S., but she still manages to produce sumptuous dinners for her extended family. Christmas dinner is 20 people, minimum. Truly a super-woman!

My mother during my childhood ~ her influence was her mother (the quintessential "domestic engineer"), and she could set and feed a table like no one else.

My business partner during my adult years ~ Mia is a tremendous cook and always prepares her food with love and care.

    My Mother-in-Law:

-She decorates her house so well for every party (she has an 1840s farm house). She really has a creative way of making the home feel so warm and comfortable.

    My Mother:

-She's a retired Home Ec teacher so every dish is so tasty. Plus, she makes it look so easy.

looks like there's a theme here to good hostessing...good hostesses make it look easy. Maybe when you love to do it, it's more of a breeze.

I try to provide the kinds of things I would like to have done for me and be the kind of 'welcoming presence' I'd like to experience, as a guest. I think that might be part of it judging from the response I get when I entertain, especially one-on-one; much like your friend, Candis. I want that recipe for Pumpkin Muffins!!

Without question my mother, who in turn was a passionate fan of Elizabeth David (the brilliant food writer who, more than anyone, brought an intelligent understanding of food to Britain, perfectly summed up by the title of one of the best collections of her writings, South Wind Through the Kitchen).

Hands down, this one goes to my friend E.....she regularly opens her house for fun and laughter over board games and takeout, and when we're very lucky, she hosts incredible, elaborate vegetarian dinner parties with her husband. Most of all, though, when I found myself suddenly between living arrangement due to what I can only desribe as an unexpected personal tragedy, she insisted I stay with her until I was ready to be on my own in my new place. It took almost three weeks, and not only did she never make me feel like a burden, she went out of her way to include me as a valued member of her family.

Grace, warmth, true consideration, that's what she represents to me in this regard.

Definitely my Mother in law Sybil. She goes over and above for every occaission. Everything is thought out and carefully executed. Decorations are kept perfect and pulled out year after year and placed the same. It's really fun to be around them for a celebration.

An Aunt of mine can cook. I know there are plenty of people out there who can cook an amazing meal on occasion, or do really wonderful roasts and what not, but somehow she can conjure up a several course meal for a hundred people at last minute's notice.

    On a budget.

It seems odd to say it, but that would be me. I'm the one who invites the singles for the holidays, I'm the one who plans the menus, hosts the BBQ, plans the offices parties and overall girl who has the magic closet. This closet is filled with decorations, vases, baskets, ribbon, candles, etc... anything that could be used for any type of household decoration or get-together. When ever my friends come over they always want to see what's new in the magic closet.

I have to give props to my Mom on this one. The woman is able to throw together a party in nothing flat. She owns plates for any occassion that she bough up piecemeal on eBay so she'd get great deals. She can coordinate a table and menu like nobody's business and make it look easy and seamless to others. While she stresses herself to make the event perfect, the people attending would never even know what she's put into it.

My friend Annemarie - she comes up with the most creative party ideas and then attends to every detail. From the invitations to the decor, the food and everything in between she pulls it all together into amazing parties and does so with a job and three kids. Yet somehow she always makes it happen because she loves to party plan and to make people happy!

My friend, Jody, who can make even the simplest gathering for a meal into a special occasion. I always feel at home at her place, no matter what.

I know "hostess" is gendered female as a word, but the most welcoming person I know is actually an ex-boyfriend of mine -- always creating a warm, welcoming space for people to come into, attends to those pleasurable details, and had impeccable Texan manners. He loved to engineer memorable gatherings...a consummate host.

It began with my Mum and know I delight in doing the same with a twist - we now just share cookware and decorative items in a big cupboard its easier and cheaper that way!
  • Kelly · 11 months ago
I would have to say my best friends mom MaryJean.
She is the best hostess and she knows how to throw a party! Even when she is not hosting an event she is so gracious and always so well prepared!
She is like a second mom to me and I always enjoy my time spent at her house!

My friend, Audra Blair. She hosts the most impressive parties! Everything is perfect! The invites...the decor...the food...all perfect! She gives Hostess with the Mostess a run for her money!
