Carrie and Danielle: What’s your beauty dilemma?

  • Dena · 1 year ago
Filler - I am debating about getting a bit of filler for those lines around my mouth - yes, I know I earned them but . . .
I believe the only thing worse than having 'laugh lines' at forty is NOT having laugh lines at forty, but I am 53 and my lines are getting worse! But can I stand the pain of the injections (of course I can) - but can I afford it? Of course I can as well!
  • bene · 1 year ago
It is my hair, it is very frizzy and sometimes looks like a bush. I have started to grow it longer and that is actually helpful, it can`t be that big when it is longer, phew. I have tried every frizzfree wonderproduct there is, but it doesn`t help one bit. Saltwater, though, makes my hair curl beautifully.

The skin I am in. Growing up as a chubby child, I have learned the importance of daily excercise and a healthy eating plan. For me personally, excercise boosts my confidence and allows me to acheive the mental and physical goals that I set for myself. As far as 'healthy eating' goes, I believe in balance rather than suffering! I try to eat pure foods as much as possible and think about food before I put in my mouth (awareness). On the flip side, I also acknowledge my insatiable sweet tooth once in awhile and dive into a bag of pear jelly beans!
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
Have you tried Frownies? Google them - they are patches that smooth out the lines and have worked wonders on the frown line between my eyes. They're inexpensive and natural. Might be worth a try before injections.
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
My biggest beauty dilemma is getting out of the headspace of comparison. I see the tall, naturally thin goddesses of the glossies and feel bad that I'm short, curvy and tend towards the 'cute' rather than 'gorgeous'. The path of physical self-acceptance and self-celebration is perhaps more difficult than any other aspect of self-actualization.
  • Connie · 1 year ago
My weight caused by necessary meds. Ugh! Also, I'm aging and I don't like it!
  • Jody · 1 year ago
Connie, I can relate to weight gain due to meds. I have put on 20lbs in the last 12 months (it came on pretty quick) with a new medication that is necessary. What a shock to a tall naturally thin girl when I was told just to watch what I eat. I have never had to do that before and it has been a rude shock.
However, I absolutely adore having boobs, a decent set anyway for the first time in my life.
Some good comes out of everything!

I thought this one over: coping with hard water? Getting heat rash on my hands and feet? (Right now my LITTLE TOE is covered in itchy blisters.) No, boringly it remains what it's always been: whenever I put on weight it goes right to my stomach and I lose all waist definition instantly. Bleargh.
  • Colette · 1 year ago
It WAS the lines and wrinkles due to aging, but I just bought this cool gadget that literally erases the lines and wrinkles right beofre your eyes. It cleans and clears the skin as well as some other benifits. The weirght I know I just need to get out and exercise, but the wrinkles, I thought there wasn't anything I could do about them unless it was surgery. Hallelujah!
  • Colette · 1 year ago
I feel your pangs. My legs are actually kinda long, so I am always wishing that some amazing miracle will happen and I will wake up one morning with a torso to match. Instead of being 5 feet and two inches tall, I would be more like 5 foot 7. I've got the arms, hands and feet for that height too. Some times I feel like a chimpanzee. Like you, I am very curvy and "cute" is the most popular word used to describe me - as in "you're so cute." How's the style statement thing coming?
  • Jennifer Sage · 1 year ago
I can live with wrinkles and weight but I seriously dislike my drying eyes and how the surrounds go red. I use lubricating eye drops and the Body shop white eyeliner pencil but it really bugs me because I really like my eye color (blue) but the surroundings are not what they were.
  • Julia · 1 year ago
My hair gets "flat as flitter" by day's end and I'm constantly trying to get the roots to lift. Anyone have advice for ultra fine straight hair? My face is sort of oblong, so I'm experimenting with style. I need to ooomph!
  • Cheryl · 1 year ago
whether or not to become proactive about the aging process. I'd like to think I will age gracefully and still be happy with how I look. People are botoxing already in their thirties - I'm thinking how old I will look among everyone around me 'doing something' if I don't!
  • Joanne · 1 year ago
This is my dilemma as well. I'll try saltwater. Do you wash your hair in it, or just rinse after shampooing?
  • Becciebeth · 1 year ago
Wow, my whole life I have been dealing with this. The rash on hands and feet that is so itchy you want to scream. I have been forever trying to figure out why? The hard water and heat rash makes perfect sense. If I expose it to sun, the pain is unbearable. But, thank you so much for this insight. Maybe I can do something about it now.
  • Jennifer · 1 year ago
how critical i am of myself is my biggest beauty dilemma. if only i looked at myself with the same adoration and generosity i do my friends i would look and feel fab inside and out. PLUS it would greatly improve the vertical line between my eyebrows!
  • Laurel · 1 year ago
Oh wow -- so glad some good might come of this! What I think happens is the mineral molecules in the hard water blend with skin oils, dead cells and soap to block pores -- the same thing that causes soap scum in the shower. However, although we have a water softener I still get the rash when it's really hot and humid.
  • Becciebeth · 1 year ago
If we are going somewhere in the evening, that morning I use a product called PSSSSST. Come time for hot rollers and teasing, it really umphs up from having the PSSSSST in my hair all day. I think it is just baby powder in a can.
  • leanne · 1 year ago
go tell it from the mountain sister!

if only we could learn to see ourselves with our heart instead of with our eyes, the way we see the people we know and love, the reflection looking back at us in the mirror would be a lot more pleasing...not to mention our sense of selfworth jumping considerably.

p.s. i am sure you are a beautiful person, inside and out...give yourself a break today. :-)

Keeping my eyeliner from running. I have combination skin, and my eyelids get oily by the end of the day and I look like I've been crying!!!!!
  • weezie · 1 year ago
Ummm. . . what is it?
  • Becciebeth · 1 year ago
My husband and youngest son have the most beautiful eyelashes. I have these little stubby hairs (they don't even qualify as lashes). Even with the thousands of mascaras available, they are stubs. I know I could put fake ones on, but my luck one would fall off into my beverage at a school meeting or sometype of event. I should just accept and be proud of my Irish heritage. And I really wouldn't mind a boob job. I think they should come free to women who have breastfed, and ended up with two sacks of flop.
  • chantal · 1 year ago
My hair...I grew up in the era of Farrah. She had perfect hair, still does. Me, curly and wild (serious high school trauma here- being one of the only ethnic girls in school). So, I straighten it and then comes humidity and rain. Some days good, some days bad. Pony tails work great!
  • chantal · 1 year ago
I used to have a similar thing with burning, itchy skin. We narrowed it down to all the chlorine in the water and bought a shower filter. What a difference! Along with a bottle of Manuka oil for any topic skin issues. Everything is cleared up.
  • Traci · 1 year ago
My hair is almost exactly the same it was when I was 8 years old...baby fine. Find yourself a really good stylist who will take the time to experiment with cutting technique. Also, a bit of sea salt in some water spritzed lightly on dry hair does wonders. And, when desperate, a light back comb is always helpful.
  • Andrea Devis · 1 year ago
I have always been on the hunt for a toothbrush and shampoo I love, not just like. I can never use the same thing twice and feel as clean or fresh and great smelling as the first time I used it.
I can live with getting wrinkles and grey hair and my experience and character showing on the outside, I would just love to have a good toothbrush that does not leave me thinking "I did all that work for this?" and a shampoo that smells Fab and does not make my curls scream for hydration!
  • Kristin (The Goat) · 1 year ago
I've noticed my eyes drying out as well.
  • Traci · 1 year ago
Boobs. I love having them, but after 16 years with them, I have yet to find a bra that REALLY works AND is pretty. So frustrating. And I'm not even THAT huge, I don't think. Something between a 34 and 36 DD. (Which is also frustrating...take the 34 AND the 36 to the dressing room and purchase the one that's less bad.) Ugh.

I recently discovered a product that makes my eyeshadow stick absolutely in place - even after a sweaty day at an outdoor music festival. It's like a miracle! I don't use eyeliner - I line with shadow - but maybe this would work for you, too. http://www.urbandecay.com/categories/EyeshadowP...

My beauty dilemma is the area around my eyes... the way the skin looks always makes me look tired. I have allergies and I was blessed with little pooches under each eye since birth. I look tired all the time, even if I am fully rested. When I am tired, I look awful.

I'd like to loose 10 more pounds to be in the low range of what I should weigh, but when I do Iloose it from the top down and never loose it where I really want it to be gone from!
  • Guylaine · 1 year ago
Baby-fine hair, colored (streaked), that I can't seem to grow past just below the shoulders. They seem to grow so slowly and the ends get very dry and they split, so I always have to cut it before it has a chance to grow enough for my taste. I've even considered getting extensions, just so I could experience long hair again... Any suggestions ?
  • Krystl · 1 year ago
try urban decay's eyeshadow primer potion. this is my miracle product. eyeshadow stays firmly in place even after a sweaty day at an outdoor music festival. i don't use eyeliner - i line with shadow, but i think this might work for any eye makeup.

Eyebright - euphrasia officinalis, is an herb I used when I lived in Arizona to combat dry, red eyes.
  • Colette · 1 year ago
LOL I thought I would never care about getting wrinkles because I look younger than I am. Then that younger look started looking old.
  • Joyce · 1 year ago
My dilemma is my hair. I have naturally curly hair that is so frizzy and now that I am older it is also wiry and I am SO allergic to hair dye. Now my hair is three colors (black, brown and now white). I can not use anything in my hair including rinses. I have also used many products for the frizz to no avail. I am slowly accepting this, but it has left me feeling really bad about myself. This has come all of a sudden, since I have dyed my hair for years. What should I do to make my hair look good. I have been to several hairdressers and they just say that my hair is my hair. HELP!!!!
  • Colette · 1 year ago
From one floppy to another - AMEN! I recommend the boob job - it does wonders for the self esteem. The water bottle look is just sooo unattractive.
  • MoJo · 1 year ago
I feel your pain Guylaine! My hair started breaking/thinning in my late 20's and now I can't ever grow it past a 'bob' legth without looking like I've got a stringy mullet. Argh. I've considered extensions too - but then I'm worried it's so fine that the extension attachments/weave will show through. One thing that did help me a bit - I stopped lightening and went a shade darker - the colour coats the hair and as I have to do it less often, it's less damaging and grows a bit longer now.

So after the hair issue - I would say the baby belly is the next in line (although, like Danielle, my 'baby' is now 3 so I need to get my a** in gear!). Oh yeah, then there's my a** - boy, I need to stop thinking about this now, before I have a list that's a mile long....
  • MoJo · 1 year ago
Danielle - are you going to post a new pic 'sans dreads'?
  • Colette · 1 year ago
Carrie, you don't have to move to India and practice yoga to shave your head. I've done it once with out a guard and three times with a number two guard. The first time I had to do it for medical reasons - hence no guard. When my hair grew in to a soft fuzz, I ditched the hat. Talk about liberation. And you will be amazed at the great hair that grows in!
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
    Weight.
I have a lot of psychological issues with being pretty.
If I don't look attractive, people are much nicer to me (men listen to what I say, women don't treat me as competition, no one treats me as if I'm the village idiot).
On the other hand, I need to lose 50 lbs for my health. Since age is evening out the beauty thing, I'm hoping to be able to relax enough to allow myself to become slender again.
    Any suggestions are welcomed.
  • Krystl · 1 year ago
Same as Danielle - 10 lbs off would give me back half my wardrobe!
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
Try Marvis toothpaste (I like the Jasmine Mint) and Alterna shampoos.
  • Guylaine · 1 year ago
Tahnks for the tip... I was thinking of going back to a darker color... you just convinced me... I'm afraid of the extensions too.
As for the a** and the belly issues, it really helped me when I read an article about "exercising" by contracting muscles (thigh muscles, belly muscles, ect***) and that you can do it just about anywhere without anybody noticing (while sitting at your desk, while walking, sitting in a car or in a bus, waiting in line, clinbing a stair, etc...) ... It really starts to show after a while....

Chanel has some liner pencils that are waterproof and also stay put all day and into the evening - they really do. I live in Alabama with air that may as well be water it's so humid....these Chanel pencils are great.

my hair, and i too have thought of shaving my head. i have extremely fine hair and got teased a few times in high school. a classmate said that i would be completely bald by our 10 year reunion. well reunion is this year and thankfully i am NOT bald - but my thin hair is something that i am very self-conscious about. i keep it short and use products to help the appearance of it - but that and my weight are the only things i worry about.

i have started noticing the dark circles under my eyes. but sometimes, i look in the mirror and realize that (not to sound conceited) even "flawed", i am still a very beautiful woman.

My biggest beauty dilema is my smile. I don't smile wide and open like most people because I have these fat little teeth and a gap that I'm embarrased of. I'm tired of smiling with a closed mouth.

Slowly but surely, I will work on getting veneers to make them all look right. I admire folks with beautiful teeth. I want my smile to mirror all that I feel inside.
  • Becciebeth · 1 year ago
My problem was never at home, we have a great water softner and filtration system due to well water. It only happened on vacations, which left us bewildered as what it could be. We thought maybe Paba in certain suntan lotions. I don't know why we never thought of the water.
  • marn · 1 year ago
    Hmmm this is depressing. :-P
Like you Danielle I too have a mommy-tummy. But mine was stretched beyond repair (unless I do surgery to rid the extra skin from gaining 51 lbs with my 2nd pregnancy. I couldn't exercise because I had extremely LOW blood pressure, and I had such bad morning sickness all I could eat was alfredo. I don't even undress in front of my husband due to the shame. Sad.
Would also have to say that my boobs are in need of some plumping up after breastfeeding too. How is it that creating 2 miracle boys, nothing sits as high, or lays as flat! Crickey!!
Might as well throw in a nose job while i'm at it! I fell into cement steps at age 12 (face first)!
  • Amy · 1 year ago
I too am "cute". Sometimes I feel like it's just a nice way for someone to say that I'm not that pretty. :) But, ya know what, who cares? Confidence and kindness are what really make a person beautiful. Kindness I got, I'm working on the confidence.
  • Erika · 1 year ago
My beauty dilemma is just not knowing how to do anything with my hair. All I can do is brush it straight down parted in the middle. I have always been a nerd and proud of it, but being a nerd tends to leave hair out of your education. How do you learn these things that every woman is already assumed to know?

Oh lord, definately my hair! I once got an amazing haircut that by some miracle uncovered the CURL in my half-asian hair. It was a dream come true and I spent a couple years after that trying to recapture the magic to no avail. Disappointment after disappointment has turned me into a tyrant when it comes to my hair, so bad in fact that I have purchased my own pair of thinning shears and a straight edge rasor and my poor boyfriend comes home to great wads of hair plugging the toilet and sprinkled around the sink, as I attempt to get it right myself. Consequently, my hair is currently really short -- even though I'm trying to grow it long...
  • Keiko · 1 year ago
I found this article/recipe in the latest Body + Soul magazine that I thought sounded fun: "Easy beach hair - Sea Salt Spray: 2 teaspoons fine sea salt, 1 cup warm water, 4-5 drops essential oil (such as grapefruit) ~ Mix ingredients in a reusable spray bottle. Shake well to disolve salt. Spray on clean, well conditioned damp hair. Run your fingers through to distribute, twisting sections of hair into ropes to further define waves. Let dry naturally, then run fingers through again to create loose, irregular ringlets. For extra hold, reapply lightly on dry hair. Shake well before each use." Enjoy!

I just got back from a woman's retreat where we spent time in nature seeing each other as the goddesses we are. Back in the city, I have been getting a lot of male attention. A man came up to me in a park and insisted I take the fruit he offered me-- 3 oranges and a banana. When I finally took them, he left me in peace, saying only "you're beautiful. I love you," and walked away. I feel radient, and the only thing that has changed is inside--- I could list many things I'd like to polish, primp, etc. but I know that feeling beautiful is the best beauty secret of all.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
    Erika,

A great number of artists have worn/wear their hair parted down the middle, and they look cool... Joan Baez wore it like that for ages; so did Cher... It all depends on what message you want to send... and how do you feel in it? The style is not the issue, the issue is how the person feels. I would love to wear that "I just got out of bed" look, but I look just like I got out of bed, not chic, or fasionable, or cute, or casual, aor intellectual...just unkempt and I feel like that... So I choose a bob. Not very great but it looks polished... ;-)

Danielle and Marn, i'm feelin' ya this morning. While giving birth is absolutely the best thing that ever happened to me, i was not prepared for the body that i would have afterwards. Although i have lost most of the actual weight (and she's 3 now, so it's bloody well time), the shape of my body is so different. My belly looks like crepe paper, and my boobs got ginormous. I used to be so perky, and now i even sleep in a bra because i can't stand how my boobs touch the skin underneath, and it HURTS not to have any support. No bikinis for the rest of my life, and i can't imagine EVER letting anyone see me naked. Stretch marks don't go away, no matter how much effing cocoa butter you put on them.
  • Tammy · 1 year ago
I must say that I love my body. I've been thin, petite and athletic all my life, even after 2 kids, and I consider myself partly very lucky and partly very disciplined and in love with dance and exercise. However, I am flat as a pancake, and it has never bothered me before now. I always found a way to look at the bright side of having small boobs- it keeps you looking young, they will never sag, nobody (meaning the men in my life) has ever complained. But I think they got even smaller after having my children (could that even be possible?) and there are many styles of clothing that just look terrible on me that I must completely avoid. I really do not want to get a boob job, but I just wish I had a little more. I also had a couple of precancerous spots removed from my cheek last year which has left an ugly darkish spot in their place. It looks like an age spot, and I'm only 38. That is bumming me out the most- I don't wear a lot of makeup and it's hard to cover up. And I have not had much success with lightening creams.

to my great shock one day a lover said, "you have nice legs, hon, short, but nice.". What? I had short legs?! I did NOT have short legs. He laughed. "When you buy your pants, do you have to get them shortened?" Yes. "By a few inches?" So? Doesn't everyone. "You mean, nobody's ever said before to you, how short your legs are?" No.
This threw me into a panic. Oh no! Not only do I have a cocktail sausage shaped figure, and the Italian moustach to keep in check, now I have stumpy pegs! He was also the one to tell me my nose was too small for my face, but cute. My chin was feminine but rather large, my feet were flat which didn't help the short legs...
Soon, my inner vision of myself, which was a "built like a swimmer" sort of "Isabella Rossalini" turned into a "built like an ogre" sort of "Jay Leno".
My beauty issue? My lover. He's like a warped mirror I carry in my pocket. And it takes ten other reflections to get his warp out of my brain.
My beauty solution? Next time I will NOT ask him "do these pants make me look fat?"

The puffiness under my eyes. I know witch hazel might help so I'm going to start applying it morning and night. It's the active ingredient in many eye potions. Has anyone got a recommendation for this?

ALSO, I'd love to see a new picture of Danielle without her dreads!! When can we expect "the reveal"?

Well thats just opening up a can of worms for me. I recently put on like 40lbs so off course i have that. I hate my feet my toes are sooooooo ugly. I even go for pedicures no help. But that dosnt stop me from being bare foot i hate shoes.

I *did* try the false eyelashes once. Once. Thinking that I looked so glamourous, I was chatting up a very handsome man who started looking at me strangely...one of the false lashes had unglued itself and was making like a caterpillar crawling down my cheek.

Needless to say, the chatting up ceased rather abruptly as I fled and vowed to stay far away from the dreadful things. (The lashes, not the men.)

did you mean toothbrush or toothe paste? Toothbrush: the Braun electric is sooo good. Toothpaste: it's an acquired taste, but Tom's Fennel toothpaste is a treat.

Hair: can't help you on the shampoo, but! Aveda makes a pomade called Brillante, and it is divine. The smell, the not-sticky moisture. It's one of my all time favourite hair things.

budget boob strategy: go to a high end lingerie store and get properly fitted. The right expert will teach you so much about your girls. If you get one or two great bras and know what to look for in a good bra/fit, then you can go to the cheaper stores for the fun stuff and sometimes find a well fitting bra.
Not sure where you live, but Nordstrom's boob ladies are amazing. And wouldn't you know it, a lot of the women who work at Sears stores in urban areas know what they're talking about.

they can do amazing "weaves" with extensions. If you're curious, look for THE BEST extension stylist you can find - go out of your way if you have to. ANd be prepared to pay big bucks. That said, extensions are like fake nails: fun at first, but you can become a slave to it. The maintenance, the care...
MoJo is right, a dark colour is the way to go. But you should mix two shades in so you don't get that all-one-colour-helmet look. I'm a huge proponent of just finding the best stylists/technicians. Fortunately or unfortunately, when it comes to you hair, you most usually get what you pay for.
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
keep shopping for a hair dresser. Stop women on the street whose hair you like and ask them who they go to. There is a solution for every hair problem -- even if that solution is a short cut and being naturally grey. You can also go to a hairdresser for a consult - more pple should do this. You don't need to "risk" a new do and try some one out every time. You could book in a complimentary 15 minutes and interview a hairdresser about what they could do for you/what they think is best.
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
well, it's about style AND how you feel. And it sounds like you want to jazz up the folical department of your life. So what if you skipped beauty class and studied other things? I didn't study much but I know a ton about beauty (and Buddhism...which doesn't help at all with my hair.)

FIND AN EXPERT. Simple. If I don't know how certain software works, I call an IT expert. You don't know about hair? Don't get educated, just get help. Two things: peel thru some mags and see what looks you like on other pple. Ask yourself WHY you dig what you dig. And maybe you have no idea. That's fine. Proceed to Step 2: Find a great salon/stylist. Feel free to interview them. Tell them you need an education. If you're open to a new look, tell them. Be prepared to make a good investment in a great cut (at least $60.) If you need to save money, you can get a more reasonable stylist to try and follow the structure of the same cut (bring in a picture of you with your fresh new hair cut.)

Forget Cher and Joan Baez (sorry Cecile.) Very very few women look amazing in middle-parted straight hair. In my opinion, it didn't even work for Gwyneth Paltrow. It tends to pull your face down. It can also hide great cheekbones.

    Happy Styling.
    xo
    Danielle

I inquired about this at the OB. I think a PA should take some courses and learn to help us bigger ladies out. It can turn into a serious health problem if you are large breasted and are not supporting them correctly. It would save them, insurance companies, and us a whole lot of time and money.

Gosh, this is really a thought-provoking question since I know that I am critical to the "enth" degree when it comes to how I look and how those around me look. I have been working for many years to unlearn my physical critiquing. I so don't want to be the wife, Mum or friend who is physically critical in any way. It is so incredibly damaging...

Having said all that; I can't help but share my top three beauty complaints:

My legs and the fact that although they are long they are not "colt like". They are solid and my knees seem to hyper-extend creating the illusion of three knees per leg rather than one. If short heavy legs are stumps then I have Douglas Firs.

The "family" of dark prickly hairs that have decided to grow (overnight) from places around my chin. WTF? (sorry, but this deserves one of these). How can a hair appear, overnight and be 3/4" long? I have tweezers everywhere in my life for the occasion when one of the "brothers" appears.

The deep crease in my brow between my eyes and the horizontal lines on my forehead. Although I am only 36 I am tempted to get the "French Womans Facelift" - a heavy set of bangs. This, I know, is extreme since I have wavy, unruly hair that would never allow me to have bangs that sit provocatively and smoothly across my brow! : )

ah yes, the cocoa butter myth. heart breaking, aint' it? I'm gearing up for putting another bun in my oven and the wreckage that pregnancy hurls is...profound. So, I'm really focusing more (even if it's in wee increments) on accepting, loving, loving, loving my body. Scars, sags, curves.

And you know, our culture isn't really helpful in this regard - the C&D; amazing chick (and male) community withstanding. If we lived in Paris or Sweden where women wear what they wear regardless of saggy tits and bellies...it may be easier to muster the celebration vibe.

As I always say...locker rooms and beaches are the great equalizer. I also feel great about myself after a day at the beach - seeing all shapes and sizes.

"Proceed to Step 2: Find a great salon/stylist. Feel free to interview them. Tell them you need an education. If you’re open to a new look, tell them."

lightening creams are a rip off.

I had a sun spot removed last year with some lazer work. A few zaps, it turns to a kind of flaky scab and just...flakes off.

Also, there are some great, natural acidic peels that can help with hyper-pigmentation. A good esthetician can help. Eminenence's Pumpkin Enzyme peel is fab.

Do you exfoliate before you shave? A good scrub (St. Ives' Peach scrub is a cheep and cheerful one, and Philosophy make a good one.) It helps loosen the follicles and you won't get the bumps as much. Shave with a soap that has essential oil and feels a bit "greasy" - usually the handmade stuff you can find in health food stores. The sudsy soap is usually full of bad stuff and dries the skin -- which can lead to bumps. Lavender oil after you shave might help as well.

Philosophy makes a great scrub. It helps

    I'm with you, Lisa M. - thighs!
My dilemma is foundation. I've tried both the $5 to $50 stuff only for it to turn orange or become an oil slick after an hour. I'm too lazy to do the 20-step skin cleansing routine, so I guess it's my own fault!

I'm short, cute and no longer young - chronologically that is. I've learned that tall men LOVE short women. It's a protective thing. They think we need them to look after us. I'm won't tell them the truth if you won't! :)

I must say that I love Love LOVE these daily Q&A's. I always feel like I'm sitting around a big table chatting with my girlfriends, laughing with each other, empowering each other. Style Statement: A godsend. Now on the subject of beauty dilemma's I would have to gripe about razor bumps along the bikini. I have thick, curly hair and no matter how much I exfoliate I get these gnarly ingrown hairs. Not attractive and it actually leaves me feeling quite insecure come summertime. I've Nair'd, exfoliated and even put deodorant down there (supposedly a stripper's secret), but it's a no-go. Life could be worse:)

As I get older, polish seems to be taking the front line. STYLE has yet again become an important aspect of my life. For me, toning up to the next level, maybe shave more often (!), buy a new accessory or two or a new pair of shoes! Other then that, I think I am ok...and thats a great feeling!

I know! It's a long-running joke that I need a footstool to reach anything in my flat...and placing something above my eye level will mean it will never be found. I also love it when I first meet people and they sensitively blurt out, "Oh! You're so short!" or something similarly amusing. It took me many years to be okay with my height. That said, my pilates teacher is two inches shorter than I am and I feel like an awkward giant when I stand beside her! (By the way, she's grown nearly an inch after years of pilates exercises...!)

My issue is my hair as well. I actually have that book that Carrie recommends about gray hair. I am 46 yrs old, shoulder length, light brown a little blond and tons of gray that I keep going to get "foiled" over. Of course the re-growth part bites and I would love to have the you-know-what's to let it rip. Am I afraid of looking old? Seriously, look how much better Jamie Lee Curtis looks. And, I don't think you're fooling anyone about your age either. So...tell me, what am I waiting for? Thanks for letting me indulge myself w/ trivial hair issues.

And I love the love in the park story. Self confidence makes us beautiful

I know, Joannie - and I LOVE tall men! The taller the better!

Kristin - I so hear you. Why do people say that? It's not like they'd ever dream of saying, "Oh! You're so fat!" I used to be a high school teacher and nearly every one of my students was bigger than me. I often get asked, "How tall ARE you?" to which my standard reply is, "Tall enough."
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
First of all, Ellen, props to bringing this up. Losing weight means redefining yourself as a thin person - and this is difficult. Many women in my family, along with close friends, have had such problems with losing weight and suddenly being treated differently. But being attractive does not necessarily mean you're treated as competition, or as a village idiot. If your personality and love of life shines, you are beautiful - heavy, thin, whatever. I sympathize with your dilemma - but if you're confident in yourself, you'll be fine, and healthy enough to enjoy an even longer life.

I just solved one of my beauty delimas. Sagging boobs!! No not a boob job (that's for next year). It's amazing what a great fitting bra can do for the figure! I love the way my new fitted bras make me look. I went for a bra fitting and found out that i was wearing the wrong bra by 2 sizes!! I finished breast feeding 3 months ago and really hadn't thought too much about my boobs until I realized that I look frumpish in my best dresses. It was my boobs. With great new sexy bras (36DD) I look like I lost 10lbs and all my clothes look great! Next, I'm with Danielle, the baby weight has to GO!

Bare Escentuals ... minerals that act like airbrushing for your face. Practice a little, then you're ready to face the world! Covers up virtually anything and absorbs excess oil all day. Might also invest in rice powder papers. I live in the sweat capital of Texas and those papers keep my face from sliding off daily ; ) They don't mess up your 'work' but they keep it polished looking!

The right bra is a must. I am small breasted with a back the size of a football player so I have one bra for dress up, actually gives me cleavage and the rest of the time i wear bra tops. My facial hair! Can't remove it without triggering a break out. After my second child it started to grow in full force! I've learned how to try to hide it (if thats possible ha!)- head down, face out of sun (so as not to have the sun glint off the lovely coarse ones!) and hand on chin when talking to someone directly (which brings more acne) ARG!

So, this week I decided to look into laser hair removal. And see how that goes. I'm at th end of my hairy rope.

    SIGH.

Belly (hating) women -- try belly dancing! Whether it gives you a six-pack or not, you learn to love your body; its curves, its capacities, its caprice. Plus, there is just something so fun and empowering about celebrating everything that shakes and moves and jiggles! If you don't want to start in a studio, try Jehan's Sacred Bellydance DVD and do what you can do, until you can do more.

It took me 4 pregnencies to accept that I would never look the same. That last pregnancy I really enjoyed being pregnant (maybe because it was my only girl-who knows), but I tossed the cocoa butter and just let mother nature take it's course. I was radient and wished I had relaxed more with the first three.

oh, i know, i know! i have such a hard time giving up on some great pieces of clothing i have that don't quite fit anymore (or never quite fit right). i guess that is my REAL dilemma. hmmm... maybe i could box them up and put them in storage and if i don't lose the weight in 6 months - out they go! it would be a real relief to quit looking at them every day - and my closets are WAY overstuffed...

The middle. There's just too much of it. It gets in the way of yoga and, depending on what I'm wearing, puts me at risk of having people ask me when I'm due. I took a "Sample" belly dancing class, though, and I'm convinced that if I kept that up my belly would decrease some and my love of it would increase a lot. Do you know of a show called "Shimmy?" It's on the FIT-TV channel in the States. Curvy (relatively) women belly dancing as exercise. Sexiest thing in the world.

For the past 9 to 10 years, I go through a phase where I lose eyelashes. It happens in the same spot each time; toward the inner part of my right eyelid and toward the outer part of my left eyelid. It will sometimes last for several months. Although it has been several years, I did see an eye specialist. He could not find anything wrong with my eyes and gave me a product to use to help the lashes grow. It did help however the last bout lasted for several months before they started growing back. HELP! I am afraid they might not grow back.

I hear and agree and feel the pain of all!
I woke up one day and thought, "I've now had boobs longer than I did not have boobs. I miss the no boob years, alas, they were too few."
Danielle is absolutely right about Nordie's the best place to get sized. They carry Huit and Wacoal which gives great support and is not so old lady looking anymore.
If there is one in your area Mervyn's is a great place for bras, esp. during a sale. They carry Bali and, Lilyette whose sizes go up to 42DD. They have Warners too which can be nice if you get the correct size.
Also good support comes from wider straps and at least 3 hooks in the back, granted this not generally a sexy look but comfort and health are the main issue.
I have also found that if the bra does not have matching or attractive undies Victoria's Secret or Lane Bryant's Cacique usually carries something very similar.

If all else fails you can do what my Grandfather did for my Grandmother, have your bras custom made in Taiwan.

I inherited my father's Mr Spock ears instead of my mother's small, shell-like ears. I really hate them, and even though I look better with my hair pulled back I have to drape it down over my ears. I'm pretty accepting of my flaws, and generally go for the natural approach, but if I had any expendable income I'd have plastic surgery on them in two seconds flat.

I'd rather focus on my positives and I have plenty of those, thank you very much. I am not my waistline and I'm more than perfect hair or blindingly white teeth. Ditto for me. But I haven't found a great bra yet and since my osteopath has told me that underwires block lymph flow I am still searching for something that works and isn't a sports bra. My hair is fine and porous so curly in humidity and arrow straight in dry and wintery conditions. Very challenging when travelling or even going from outside to inside. Hats flatten and kill any style that I might muster, so winter is tough for me. As Danielle suggested a great stylist and good products are worth paying more for. I recently found a stylist with the same type of hair and she uses Aveda products. We'll see how we get along this winter! Hair aside, my big bothersome beauty dilemma is the presence of chemicals in everything and everywhere...and I'm not just talking about beauty products here. I love swimming, but I really don't like chlorine and bromine. I've resorted to desparate measures to escape the 'eau de bromine that haunts me many showers post swim. Various shower products combined with loofahs and skin brushes have not delivered so my last resort is to run on the treadmill for 20 minutes to try to sweat it out before showering. Now really...... why couldn't we just have a gentle saline filtered pool? I am also conflicted about sun screen....chemicals versus uv protection? For a long time I avoided hair colour and nail polish, but recently decided to go with Aveda products for hair and I found water based nail polish that helps make my beat up toenails respectable ...love my wide strong feet, but running has done a number on the toenails.

I have suggested this on a previous question. I came up with it on my own out of pure disgust of nothing working. As soon as I'm done shaving my bikini area, I take a very hot washcloth (as hot as you can stand), and hold it in place for maybe 10-15 seconds. I repeat several times on whole area. I don't know why this works, but it does. Well for me anyways. Good luck!!!

Try StingEze, in a spray, it helped stop me from getting the razor burn when I shaved, I think it contains an antihistamine that stops the skin reacting, when it dries it leaves behind a white powder. But also try a variety of razor blades as some cause razor burn more than others.

not very long ago I decided to list 3 things I do really like about myself and concentrate on accentuating those things. Got ears peirced and only brought earrings that made my eyes looked bluer. Started celebrating my height with 3" heels (when I am out) and practicing that confident walk. My hand are my work (Midwife and nurse) I am going to award them for their fabulosity and get 2 major rings quite soon. concentrate on the things that make you a very beautiful person.
Oh and use pro age beauty products. Can you get Dove Pro Age in North America? Why do we women start our day looking at the word anti age plastered over the creams we put on our selves. Love yourself by moisturing with something that is in favour of you not against you.
Just 3 things (but you can have more if you want) and treat them like loved and adored children. You find yourself smiling at the mirror instead of frowning. you start to see your beauty and it smiles back at you

Can I just say there are some of us that would have given anything to wear the "badges of fertility" but we were not able to have children.
I read somewhere once that in some cultures men prefer/value/find attractive women with evedence of their childbearing ability about them. Sadly we do not live in one.
To put it crudely men are biologically programmed to seek evidence of fertility. If you have that look you are seen as hot, hot, hot. Some Men in our society are sadly looking for a quick shag and nothing more. That is the shadow side of the sexual revolution.

    My beauty dilemmas:
    - I need to lose 100 pounds (and have needed to for 5 years)
    - my hair is severely thinning - as a woman I'm devastated.
    - conversely I'm gaining tons of facial hair that if I remove by waxing or plucking I get horrible ingrown hairs on my face resulting in cystic acne - I can't afford laser treatments to try to treat the root of the problem
    - I can't decide on a clothing personality because my options are currently limited by my size and what I would only feel comfortable in - so I buy out of desperation but I never like what I own or how it looks on me or what it says - because really I just know that I'm enormous and I feel like that's all that anyone sees.
    - my feet have always been very wide and oddly shaped - so I do not get excited about shoes. I live in converse and can't fit into most cute shoes.
    - sagging boobs and cellulite and the feeling of how horrible my body will look when I lose weight with extra skin, etc.
    - the back of my neck is hunched - No matter how straight or tall I try to stand - my neck and back look like I should be 90 and I'm almost 29.
Ugh, I've been really depressed about all this lately.

I think underneath all this I have a pretty face - but when it's covered in acne and people comment on how shiny my scalp is because they can see so much of it - I just don't know how to start to work with my beauty dilemmas - it feels overwhelming.

BE POSITIVE - take the first step by visualizing how you want to look, and you'll get there. It's all about inner beauty, anyway, and taking care of your spirit. Your physical self will follow. Good luck!!

I know, I love the name! They were recommended to me by a woman who owns a health food and alternative med shop in my hometown. I thought she was nuts, and soon realized that these things rock. Give them a week or two - make sure you massage the skin before putting them on. Now I only wear them a couple of times a week and I can really see the difference in photographs.

I am tall, and always wished I was shorter and curvier. My Grandmother was 5'2" and she was CUTE all her life. I used to feel like such a beanpole in school. And no, the boys did not like me. I guess as I have aged, I have learned to accept myself, but I still think the shorter curvier gals are so pretty and cute. :)

My biggest dilemma is probably keeping my baby-fine hair from being dry. It is a constant battle to keep it healthy and manageable. When it is undernourished it feels yucky. When it is over nourished it is totally flyaway! It is funny, because if someone were to ask me what my favorite feature is I would definately say my long, soft hair, but at the same time, it is my biggest dilemma too!
