Carrie and Danielle: What’s sacred to you?

  • Scarlett · 1 year ago
Two things: Goodness. No one in the world has the right to tarnish that; or take that goodness away from anyone. Goodness is pure in a child and only gets scarred as the child grows unable to explain realities it relies on adults to teach. Second, is "who you are". Never be defined by anything or anyone: not by people, fame or the need for other's approval, money. Live as you want and never impose on others what your concept of living is. it would be a better world that way.

Creation. When i stand with my feet in the ocean or run through damp green woods i can't help but worship. THere is so much beauty packed onto this little planet and every peice is a clue to the character of GOd. I love it.

Food - it nourishes the body, and if eaten in the right state of mind the soul... ( this was the first thing that came to mind)

Prayer - how else can one communicate with the divine?

Song/Music/dance - it shows what is in my soul, I love to sing and play and dance

But if you want the short answer - health, in body, mind and spirit.

The morning is sacred to me. I spend quiet time with my dogs..listen to beautiful music...light a candle to thank the Creator....drink coffee and anticipate the promise of a new day. Morning represents hopefulness to me. The day's possibilities are endless!
  • Julia · 1 year ago
Yes, and it reminds us that there is a big, beautiful world out there way beyond the routines of our lives!

Laughter - whether it's silliness, or joy, or satire, or gallows humour, it feels vital to my existance, to my ability to handle the world.
  • Mary · 1 year ago
Trust - this is the most sacred to me. The trust given me by another is not to be broken. It is to be held in high regard. Especially if it is someone's deepest thoughts or belief's. The person entrusting me with this knowledge is giving me the most precious gift, they are sharing a part of themselves with me.

A continuation of Danielle's answer, sort of... Mindful kindness in our words and actions. I worry so much about the state of the world, and the lack of community anymore. I think living kindly and mindfully, as well as speaking kindly and mindfully, is the simple thing that would turn everything around.

My nephew. He has always been sacred to me. Since I have been so close with him since he was a baby, I have seen him change and grow and learn. The very fact of his existence in this world is sacred because it is so amazing to me that someone can be brought into this world and then turn into the person he is. I love him as if he is was my own child.
  • Ella · 1 year ago
The fact that wherever I go, there I am.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
I LOVE this response, Ella. For years I hated living where I've now lived for 27 years. Then one day I walked into a Catholic Christian Book Store and was looking through the cassettes. There staring at me was a tape, 'Bloom Where You're Planted'! I took it as a message that 'wherever I go, there I am' and to give myself a shake! :)

Energy. The healing energy of the outdoors; the buzz of a city; the power of music; the shimmy of being in the creative zone. The hints that energy can give about people, situations, time, places. Tapping into the energy of the universe is crucial to my creativity. Creating my own positive energy is crucial to my existence.

The earth, taking care of it for the future.
Words - I'm with Danielle on this. I'm a writer and I know the power, the importance of every word spoken or written. A word once spoken can't ever be taken back.
Kindness - a wonderful social activist, and writer from Canada whom I was privileged to meet a few years ago - felt this was the most important virtue.
Having time alone to write, think, read, reflect, look out of the patio doors into the garden.
    Meditation.
Music including singing in the choir.
    Love.

What great answers from everyone! Each one makes me say "me too!" Yes, words!, creation!, food!, music!, body!, freedom!, energy! meditation! and also springing to mind: consciousness!, democracy!, curiosity! I think, though, underwriting it all, I would have to say the interconnectedness of all things is what i hold sacred.

Vision and dreaming. What I see internally and externally, with depth, clarity, complexity and wonderment. It expands into another dimension (or comes from one). And it is then expressed in wisdom, art, body movement, home, work, family and more.

At first I thought, "Oh, it's one of those spiritual questions that make me tired." until I read several of the answers and realized that I, too, hold words, food, kindness, and laughter very sacred in my life. Also shoes. Thanks, C&D, for once again providing an avenue to explore and enhance one's here-ness.

My wife and family. She's my best friend, my inspiration, she gave me the kick in the butt I needed and often need to be reminded of. She is an amazing mother, and has blessed me with two wonderful sons. Everyday I feel blessed, no longer a ship at sea, but firmly anchored in safe harbor.

Sacred to me is nature and my ability to BE in it every day. Sacred to me are the relationships I cultivate. Sacred is my little sister Larie (who I just can't reach emotionally these days...)

cuddling and kissing on my 13 year old daughter. we were locked in a warm embrace recently and i happened to catch her reflection in the mirror. her eyes were closed and the most beautiful, sweet smile was on her face. even as she grows (or especially as she grows) into womanhood, our physical connection- hugging, cuddling and kissing is so precious to me.

At this very moment as I am in the middle of the wind and rain storm of Tropical Storm Fay, I know that I hold my home sacred. I've spent many days alone, without power for several hours the past two days and I've been able to really see my home. No TV or radio or even computer to distract me from the heart of my home. My husband is out of town, so I've really spent time with my house. It is sacred.
  • jennb · 1 year ago
One word Family. My children, my husband to be, my sisters and brother, my mom and dad. All of them. They have all been there for me when needed the most. They make me laugh, cry, and everything in between. I am so lucky to have the family i do.
  • textimage · 1 year ago
breath and beauty. i work to cultivate both in my life. BREATH: sometimes its playing with breath control (pranyama), other-times it's watching my breath in the moment. deep breaths in and sighs out, subtle languid breaths, even rapid fire, shallow upper chest versions... i am thankful for each breath and honor the wisdom each one possesses. BEAUTY: i think of beauty as embodying "grace". this can be a physical manifestation of a state of mind or energetic expression. beauty is sacred in all its forms, it is pure, creative, lacks self-consciousness and is present everywhere, i just have to open my heart to it.

My character! because it encompasses who I am, what I believe and it will COLOR your future interactions with me, negatively or positively. (and the same goes for other people I encounter) Past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.
  • Katie Laporte · 1 year ago
A few things are sacred to me..One, is nature. I look outside everyday and smile at how beautiful it really is, sometimes i almost get high off how much i really enjoy the clouds in the sky, individual leaves on the trees, the water.
My husband and son are truly, truly sacred to me..
And life..i have found a new meaning to life in the last year that has changed me forever..from running away to different places around the world to coming home and facing all of my own truths and finally dealing with them properly..whew.. i just feel lighter!!

The heart! Absolutely the heart...I am very careful and tender when it comes to the hearts of my loved ones, especially my husband and kids, but really everyone I come in to contact with. The love and nurturing we show to other people is a reflection of who we really are. Treat others as you would like to be treated, you will live a very happy life.
  • Stephanie · 1 year ago
Someone once told me that your body is your most valuable possession. I was young then and it made an impression, so I have always acted like the body is sacred, and treat it accordingly - food, exercise, medicine, rest. And I believe there is no injustice more serious than the violation of someones body.

The human body is just one manifestation of Nature, which is sacred and should be treated accordingly.

I would have to say my friends. I can't say enough about the impact my girlfriends have had in my life. The laughter, the tears and the unconditional love that exists is mind blowing to me. I would not be who I am without them.

Peace and kindness. Without them everyone and our entire planet is out of control. With wars, our current election frenzy and the extreme consumerism for more and more "stuff" when our homes are already overflowing. We seem to be on a mission to have every material item and have lost touch with what is truly important. God, a simple life and the people we love.

    everything has rhythm, everything dances
    - maya angelou

every cell in our bodies is vibrating. even the first cell of our hearts starts beating long before our hearts are formed. music, language, walking, talking... everything has energy and rhythm and vibrations. and we are all constantly entraining to the energies around us - from the breezes that blow to the people near us. that's why i love drumming so much. it's rhythm and energy and it's all good.

    Thanks Joannie,

I've been living in a new city for all of three days, not knowing anyone, moping around, telling people I was sick of my own company, when I realized: that's what I've got. I'm going to be there, wherever I am, and I better get used to it, and start enjoying myself. Enjoying my self. And being aware of me and centering, even though I feel a little off my axis.

My alone time is sacred for me. I am an acupuncturist and I see and work with approximately 12 people's energies every day and I have a six year old so my time to myself is vital. Whether it is being a couch potato, organizing my home or running on the beach with my ipod, I try to recognize the need to replenish my energy by being with myself and my thoughts.

Oh, lots of great answers as usual. I agreed with most and had to think about what I choose and it came to me very clearly. I was going to say that it's my home, which I love returning to no matter where I go in the world, but then I realized as I've grown into the last third of my life.. it's my health. Doing what is good for my body also feeds my soul as it heals and gives me confidence. I've taken a long time to learn to love my body again.

I love you too Jenn, and as well cherish the same. We must be nuts, but Hannah (our Grandmother) would have it no other way.

Other than my family, which is naturally sacred in my mind. My marriage, as well as marriage in general. We have been through so much, good and bad, and only love each other more for it. It will always amaze me that love can grow stronger with hard times.
And Danielle, I thought I was the only one. I'll forever be looking for a GOOD match at scrabble. I would love to know how you are implementing this with your son. Words were just always a deep desire for me.
  • Carolynn · 1 year ago
Excellent question as I find it reinforces my convictions. I wanted to give this serious thought and, while many of the answers given here, resonate with me, as well, I would have to say my Personal Space is most sacred to me. That's two-fold.

Firstly, as someone who experienced physical abuse as a child, my Personal Space is very sacred. I have a lot of boundary issues and I don't always make good choices, however, they're my choices to make. Don't enter my Personal Space without having first been invited.

Secondly, and closely tied with the first, the Peace & Quiet, Safety & Security of my home is definitely sacred to me. It's my sanctuary and where I take respite from the world.
  • Julia · 1 year ago
I forgot to mention that I look forward to "the question" from Carrie and Danielle every morning! Thank you so much for providing a way to open our minds and hearts every day! This is such a part of my sacredness. Keep it coming!

Living just three days in a new city! How exciting. How scary! Good for you Ella. You're very brave. I hope you enjoy your own company. I think something happens when we do. Somehow it draws other people to us like a magnet! :)

Silence. Chaotic atmospheres, noise, chatter, tangents, distractions, to-do-lists... everything in the world is too fast-paced and noisy. I need silent moments, free from anxiety and chatter. There's nothing like a moment alone, by myself, when I'm right there in the moment and not thinking or feeling about something else.

I find that I am sacred to me. It has taken me a long time to reach this point and it is still a struggle, because I love to help and take care of other people. This passion has led to me being taken advantage of and I have had a few one way relationships. That has been my lesson, to be strong enough to put myself in focus and love my self the way I love others. Nature and children is sacred to me as well . As I see it, they go hand in hand. We have to take care of our surroundings to leave the planet a better place for the new generations.

Great answers Carrie and Danielle. Both lead me to deeper thinking and yes I would say both are sacred to me too. But when I clicked on to answer this question I would have to say that my time is sacred to me.
Time to think, time to daydream, to look at how my garden is growing, time to love and laugh with my family, moments spent with my friends, time to read a good book, time to sit and read your inspirations!!!
