Walking in one mi casa, one would see an array of ecclectic mixes between the old and the new. My house would probably say, "Creativity, dumped furniture meets refurbishment, artistic, bold, quirky, adventurous, & quiet." I doubt my house would say anything about consistent organization or dust-bunny free...

i was afraid of color when i was younger...no longer. i was interviewed for an online house tour, and really had to think about my design philosophy. in essence: i need quiet colors as background, texture to break up the abundant natural light, objects that permit daydreaming of times past, and paintings and photographs and drawings on every wall. i operate best in organized chaos, and when in the midst of mad creation, i cover every flat surface with my experiments. i often pull out my ironing board when i run out of table tops, and tape fabric manipulations on my patio doors to get a different perspective on the current concept/direction. homes evolve..."shelves once overflowing with Ninja turtles, sketchbooks, fire trucks, water guns, microscopes, and required reading are now quiet with folded silks and linens."

I just bought the tiniest house and i'm in between deciding to just put all my kitch stuff out there and have my house saying that i'm a small girl in a grown ups body or to actually grow up and choose for a little more sophisticated look...
In the end i guess it will turn out to be the house were snowwhite and the seven dwarfs lived in with my junk from all over the world in it but with a real at homw feeling...

As a home-decor writer and scout for magazines, my home is an important part of my life and the common denominator of the feed-back from those who enter is always... "I could stay forever. It's so calming and serene, comfortable and cozy.' All wonderful adjectives that confirms when you do what feels right for you, others recognize that immediately.

Twenty-something single (somewhat girly) girl who clearly loves shoes, clothes and magazines. Note that clutter-free/minimalist isn't part of this description. Ever-evolving / never done (but full ideas - full of colorful, stylish seeds of potential). On a journey far from home but cherishing every step along the way, and definitely not afraid to take risks in life and in style. Bright, warm, and creative; freakishly organized, but still loves "stuff". My home says, "this girl will someday have that home you love to linger and be a houseguest in - but today, she might be a little more focused on her career and social life. And clothes..and shoes."

I'd LIKE for my home to one day say a little more zen, a little more "have a seat in my haven", and a lot more "nest for love and family". But right now, I'd say that my home is an accurate reflection of me - whether I like it or not - so what more could I ask for?

Oh come on in, let's chat for a while. Tell me about your life.
I want it to be comfortable, inviting, cozy and warm. Nothing pretentious, nothing fancy, nothing in excess, except for friendship, acceptance and love. But I also absolutely want it to be simple, clean, uncluttered. What is out and on display are things that we, without a doubt, love or use.

Thank you so much for your reply and wisdom! You really nailed it by mentioning 'delayed gratification.' I remind myself that raising healthy kids is more important than wall color! They will feel less threatened over the years so I'll work my style in when I can. I take delight in dressing myself instead of dressing my home for now.

We just did a soup-to-nuts renovation of our one-bedroom apartment, so this question has been much on my mind for the past several months. In such a small space, comfort and functionality are key, and are the bones of our place. We have very specific needs and our house now is perfectly functional, which pleases me to no end, and definitely says something about us. We love to cook, and our tiny kitchen now actually works and is a lovely, pleasant, easy to clean space. We have huge libraries of books, vinyl records (my husband is a dj), and movies and games - all housed in purposefully chosen shelving (Ok, the books are still spilling over a tiny bit!). We have a ridiculous amount of electronics - large tvs and home theater systems in both the living room and bedroom, a full dj set-up, three computers (one that we built ourselves), every current generation game console, dvd players, apple tv, sirius radio... These are things we love and we've managed to create organized and attractive space for all of this. We are now in the process of choosing the finishing touches - art, color, lighting... I want it to be stimluating, inspiring and entertaining. Multi-faceted. Just like us! :)

I adopted two mutts and they've brought so much joy into my life! Don't ever be afraid to crate train, though! I've replaced blinds, upholstory, cushions, bras, and the like. It's worth it to get through the puppy stage and love your doggies! My dogs stay inside and listen to NPR when I'm gone or watch the Food Network...helps with separation anxiety!

I agree. I make do with less in other areas so that I can have a cleaning service. It is one thing that makes you feel nurtured and looked after.

My husband is the professional photographer (although now that I've had photos published too maybe I'm semi-pro??) and no, we don't have any photos on the walls! It's actually an ongoing joke between us: I want him to make prints of some of his images and he (partly from misplaced modesty and partly because he says it's a pain to have good prints made from his digital files) doesn't do it . . . I'm going to tell him you asked!

Our home says four children live here, and I really wouldn't have it any other way. My previous home I designed it with only "me" in mind. It was beautiful, but it lacked the feeling of "home". It was just a house not a home. I changed that in our new home. You will always smell something wonderful. It may be a fresh pot of soup, cookies, playdough, or Mr. Bubble. But it is home. Our wonderful toy filled, crayoned walls, fingerprinted sanctuary.
