Carrie and Danielle: What would you like your home to say about you?

  • Kristin · 1 year ago
Come on in, sink into the sofa with a glass of wine or a cup of tea, and let's talk about whatever comes to mind, which is hopefully inspired by the music you hear, the art on our walls, our photographs, the view from our windows, the scents in the air. I want people to feel comfortable, cozy, and chilled-out, and hope that I can make it adjust to us as we change, travel, experience new things, create new projects. Home is so much about the feeling you get, the exploration of the senses. Remembering all of the senses creates a stunning impact.
  • Tara · 1 year ago
My home says exactly what I want it to say, ecclectic, warm, comfortable loving space - unfortunately it also says two young children who can't put their things away, people who can't be bothered to take of their dirty riding boots and clearly no cleaner present!
  • Laurel · 1 year ago
Ours says, "Somebody here is a photographer," because there are lenses and camera bodies, gear bags, spare cables, battery chargers and card readers forever on the coffee table and other horizontal surfaces . . . it also says, "Indulged cat on premises."
  • Joanne · 1 year ago
I want my home to be a friendly, welcoming place where people feel comfortable. I also would like it to reflect that I am an organised, capable, successful person. I think I've got the first, but definitely have a long way to go for the second.
  • Tamar · 1 year ago
Tara, I think we live in the same home...
  • bene · 1 year ago
My home is just like i want it to be, a true reflection of who I am. It is bold, spiritual, packed with books, artistic, relaxed, cosy and romantic. I wondered how it all would come together, all the different aspects of me, but it mixed really well. I am quite a paradox, very romantic indeed and yet bold, dramatic, have a real zest for life and any adventure that comes my way. To put it in short, I am a romantic tomboy. A bit like Anne of Green Gables and a bit like Annie get your gun. It always takes people by surprise, because I look very sweet and innocent, indeedio.
  • Julia · 1 year ago
My home says come in and be yourself here! I think my space shows what's important to me--nurturing those people/things I love. I keep a photo collection in my dining room, much to the dismay of designers everywhere! They say you shouldn't keep personal photos displayed, but my picture frame garden shows off what's most important to me--my family and friends.

I have kept furniture from multigenerations (family stuff); I have maintained the scale from those periods and mixed in some modern pieces. I love to reuse and recover with fresh, up to date fabrics/paint; there's always a story to tell. I feel like I honor my history but don't live in the past when I repurpose what's been handed down to me. I think it's nice to appreciate what you've got right under your nose!

I do collect some things like baskets and cool glass jars/bottles, but group them together so there isn't clutter. I am a single girl, so I can afford to be a neat freak. My house is an organized, smellin good little cottage where my dogs perch on top of my newly recovered sofa and watch the cars go by!

A temple of living between the worlds of earth and heaven. Perfect harmony of nature and humanness (feng shui).
A home that says - expand into who you truly are, live in the moment and be fulfilled.
  • Suzie Sunshine · 1 year ago
How timely - I have just finished choosing fabrics to recover my ANCIENT, hand me down pieces in our main living area. The fabrics are "beachy ,soft, welcoming and family friendly - just what I've always dreamed of - and my daughter helped me with all of them. She definitely has style!

    Welcome ;-)
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
I would like my home to say that within its tiny walls lives a Peek-a-Pom named Bacchus whose toys are everywhere and who is the joy of my life. I would like the brightly coloured walls to say that a creative soul lives here and the work room to say that soul is a writer.

I would like the view from the patio window to say, 'Come out and wander through my garden. See the beautiful Red bird and the pair of yellow finches, a 'lady' and her 'lover'! :) The Passion Vine to reveal its secrets, but only to you and the heady scent of Sweet Autumn Clematis to make you swoon.

I would like my home make you happy to be alive.
  • Lisa · 1 year ago
My home says: "Welcome. Stop and rest a while. Many folks have found some healing here, you may be among them." There's beauty inside and out, comfort and comfortableness, and many cozy corners in which to read, write, think and talk.
  • Karen · 1 year ago
Sounds like you already have Heaven in your home!!

That there is more to life than nesting. I want pictures on the wall of activity away from home- getting the most out of life. Trying to get a house to say something is ego driven and comes from "I am not enough." How we answer this one is highly instructive.
  • textimage · 1 year ago
great question because our home is a natural reflection/extension of our needs, ideas and aspirations, BUT the addition of "want" in the question sort of skews me into it being a conscious creation for others. regardless, it says there is space in smallness, that beauty and order/flow and alignment support us and we subtly immerse ourselves in our past, present and future w/o obvious distinction.

thanks for creating this subtle shift in my thoughts this morning.
  • textimage · 1 year ago
i couldn't agree more about "how we answer this one is highly instructive". i am so grateful that all the daily questions from c&d offer us the opportunity for self-awareness, and not necessarily definition.
  • Kerry L. · 1 year ago
Usually it says peace, quiet, tranquility. Today it says harried, procrastination and neglect. I want it to say cherished love and sanctuary.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
Oh! Good one!!!!! Yessss! My home... I have been reading the STYLE STATEMENT ... My apartment is has wrap around windows and is surrounded by Biscayne Bay waters... It's very cheerful. I have also conveyed a feeling of calmness, and comfort that people love. The next time I paint it, it will be steel blue, pale steel blue. Now is that Tuscan terracotta that contrasts with the blue water... Pretty... It syas: WELCOME, have a comfortable seat, and make yourself at home!!

A comfortable well lived in space where everyone feels relaxed and stress free from adults to children, and of course my cats. I always say if I have a free couch its yours to use for as long as you need it.
  • Andrea Devis · 1 year ago
You are "welkom" in our sanctuary, and as long as you respect it and us you will always have a place to stay. :)
  • Colette · 1 year ago
If Tara and Tamar live in the same house, then so do you and I.
  • Tammy · 1 year ago
I would like my home to say that a really hip and cool artist lives here in peace, serenity and casual comfort, and who has the wherewithall to employ a cleaning service. At the moment it looks like a house of chaos where messy children and people with way too many "to do" lists live in a barely contained state of stress.
  • Colette · 1 year ago
Warm and graceful, comfy cozy, an appreciation of the past mixed in with current trends. Live, Love, Laugh - that is my theme and starts with each word done in metal work on a long metal rod stuck in the rock garden as you come up the path to my front door. These words are displayed through out my home in different art work forms. Since we built a new home and I am still moving in and decorating, my home says work in progress - which actually is very apt! Play is my driving force. I can get anything accomplished if there is a big "play" reward afterward. Goofing off is not necessarily play. It took me 5 days to build the rock garden and I hand carred all but one boulder - that was play to me because it was fun. But board games and card games are a daily activity in my home. It is what we do instead of sitting on the couch watching tv. (although the tv is on sometimes). My home says "don't worry, be happy."

That while my tastes are simple, they aren't cookie-cutter. I wish it also screamed "You're a champ at puppy housebreaking" but that has yet to come. Right now it's more of a whisper I guess.

Some day... my home will say "I am the object of heart, a great eye, and superb taste."

What I love and value is in my everyday life
  • Dena · 1 year ago
My home says elegance and comfort - art and beauty - obviously I don't have children! It is a welcoming place but still very much 'my territory', as in come this far and no further. It's my quiet little haven!
  • Kathleen · 1 year ago
Our home says that we like comfortable yet elegant spaces, that we love muted, calming colors, that we lived in Japan. Also that we love to cook and entertain family and friends.
  • Dena · 1 year ago
I totally disagree - my home is a reflection of me, and is not a symptom of an overactive ego - I believe only someone with an overactive ego himself would make that accusation. I am MORE than enough, therefore it spills over into my home . . .
  • bene · 1 year ago
It is natural that your home reflects who you are! Just like clothes, the people you hang out with and the books you read . If pretencious, like having Kafka and Dostojevskij on the coffeetable, that is a matter of Ego. There is a natural difference between the sexes in this matter and so is taste. I remember with fright my boyfriends homemade wood clown clock.
  • bettyann · 1 year ago
Come on in,Take your shoes off and grab a book! We could just sit around and eat, laugh and read all day.
  • bettyann · 1 year ago
Hey Jenn, I love relaxing at your house. It is the greatest
  • Don · 1 year ago
I agree. Ego driven however is not the same as your term "overactive ego" and should not be taken out of context. I was on a simplicity rant and am sorry to offend.
I am humble therefore I improve.

As a designer, I know how overwhelming it can be when every day you are so stimulated by your projects or the resources and shops out there. Grace, it sounds like that may be happening to you. I overlook the ocean and I deliberately leave all my work behind. My walls are a fresh white, floors are chocolate and I have pops of apple green and ocean blue on favorite chairs, john robshaw pillows etc. but no clutter. I am always shopping and antiquing so I am always editing and donating so my space remains a modern retreat and reflects my memories and travels by what I love whether it is a shell, an old bakelite radio that was part of a larger collection from years ago etc., or a modern DWR lamp.

I would recommend that you only bring into your home what you love and if you love your DIY projects than that is you and it should make you happy. If you feel you need to go beyond that, than perhaps select one or two pieces to keep in the colors you love and work from there for inspiration.
I am so passionate about bringing style into the home and love this query! Thank you C&D!!

This is a fun one! I am in the process of making my house say what I want it to: that this is a place for good friends, good food, and good fun in lovely surroundings with lots & lots to read. Daily I fight the clutterbug within, but there will always be a discarded pair of shoes in every room
  • andrea · 1 year ago
I want my house to have the air and smell of a house that is a home. When my husband and I bought our 1920's house the first thing we noticed was that it "felt" good. The history and the bones of the house spoke of happy family times. We bought the house with the hope that we could raise our family with the same spirit.
From a purely aesthetic perspective, I love the balance of new and old, classy and edgy, muted and bright. Slowly, as a work-in-progress, I am determined to replace our functional garage-sale-finds with pieces that are functional and beautiful. It may take some time but that is part of the fun!

Our home has a personality disorder. It's ninety years old, but been renovated so many times by so many differently-minded owners that it's...bizarre. It says, "I'm classic! I'm seventies! I'm Wayne's World in the basement. I'm traditional. I'm Brady Bunch fireplace. I don't know what I am! Help me..."

I would like our home to be a haven. A place that inspires us to go out and follow out hearts, put a stamp on the world, and then again to follow our hearts back home. I got stuck in a country rut a year back (while I was nesting= not the best time to decorate a house) and I've recently realized that while "country cottage" is comforting, it should be balanced with risks, with art and books that inspire us. It should represent both mine and my husband's taste. We may be different in many ways, but these differences enrich us. I feel like it shouldn't be impossible for our house to have a creative balance as well. (Clean and creative would be BLISS, but one thing at a time!).

I want my home to say that I am open, creative, always learning and care about the world I live in. We've filled our home with little treasures picked up at open markets in foreign lands and carefully framed drawings of our 6 year old. Our open space says that there are no barriers between us or those who come through our door.

  • Lisa D. · 1 year ago
Oooo! NOT my favorite subject!! Usually it is the 'lady of the house' whose taste is reflected in the home. Or it's a wonderful eclectic mix of husband and wife. My home says next to nothing me. Since I am a stepmom and the last one on the scene, I cannot swoop in and turn the house upside-down aesthetically to suit myself. I must add to the design little by little over a respectable time span as to not rock the emotionally boat. I accept this for the kids' sake but it *kills me* because I am an artist and loooove interior design!! All of my wonderful home accents are stored in our BASEMENT. Someday I would like it to reflect my style statement: genteel radiant - - feminine, a bit sexy with touches of 'shine.' Elegant but downright comfy. Someday...
  • Lisa M. · 1 year ago
Well for starters, hopefully it's clean!

Streamlined, minimalist, woody and modern but cozy...with a few little ecentric objects from travels. With bikes at the door, piles of books and magazines, bottles of red wine on the counters, a fridge mostly filled with cheese our home says that the two people living here like to indulge in leisure time as often as possible. I'd like our home to say it's entertainment central.
  • Laura · 1 year ago
My home says "in transition-bear with us while the floors are laid, the walls are painted and the decor is refreshed." In a few weeks I hope it will say "welcome to our new living space - clean, simple, serene, glowing with light, connected to nature, waiting for your conversation."
  • Lisa D. · 1 year ago
That is quite a transition to deal with on so many levels.

The books, cats and movie sound very comforting and snug!
  • Karen · 1 year ago
Living on a farm greatly impacts our style of living. It's rustic and natural. Being nestled into the woods we have extra large panoramic windows.....making us feel as if we're sharing the forest with all of its inhabitants. Our home whispers...leave your cares, quiet your mind and enjoy being loved and looked after!
  • marn · 1 year ago

What it says: we are still merging our individual lives into that of a couple....with a dog....and a cat.

What I want it to say: This is a sanctuary, a haven. Come and rest.
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
this must be a predicament that plenty of stepmoms relate to. Good for you for being sensitive (but of course, you're Genteel Radiant!) Maybe you could engage them in some redesigning...one room and colour swatch at a time...
  • Dolly Hopkins · 1 year ago
I am not afraid of colour - I love art and have collected it from around the world - (the art is smaller and eclectic) There is always food in the fridge and plenty of things to look at. My life is in my home.
  • Jennifer Sage · 1 year ago
It feels to me there should be a book around about this matter. Would you like to write one? If you are able to access your inner wisdom there will be some things you can do to make it better. As a person who regards living space as a VERY personal expression of who I am I have ached reading your posting.

I there any chance you can start with the main bedroom? Is there some place where you can make a sacred space that says: Genteel Radiant with some of YOUR beautiful things. someplace you see every day. Just 3 or 4 that you maybe change with the seasons of the year.
Delayed gratification can be a good thing. It can mean you get very educated and savvy about the decorating places in your town that do speak to your sense of style. Hang out there and watch the stock in these places drift in and out of the shop. educate your eyes, and ears and nose and taste buds and sense of touch. Is there house perfume that says genteel radiant that you can bring in right now, styles of cooking that will delight the family (and you). Music that sings to you. Children do grow up and leave home and you will be much more genteel radiant then than you are now. Concentrate on the other aspects of your life that you can fully breathe your style statement (see page 89 of C&D's book to remind yourself) Sometime in the next few years the whole house will get repainted and you can be right there with that exact color that your love and adore. Now what color (the exact shade) is feminine a bit sexy with touches of shine? Also you can move the existing stuff around bit by bit and make things more personal.
These are some of my ideas and I bet you can think of some even better ones because you are there on the spot. And I am sure you are right to know you need to move slowly and gradually gain the love confidence and trust of your new family.
there is a TV advertisment in NZ that has as part of the dialogue "It won't happen overnight but it will happen" and my family often use that saying when talking about significant transformation.

Our home says four children live here, and I really wouldn't have it any other way. My previous home I designed it with only "me" in mind. It was beautiful, but it lacked the feeling of "home". It was just a house not a home. I changed that in our new home. You will always smell something wonderful. It may be a fresh pot of soup, cookies, playdough, or Mr. Bubble. But it is home. Our wonderful toy filled, crayoned walls, fingerprinted sanctuary.

My husband is the professional photographer (although now that I've had photos published too maybe I'm semi-pro??) and no, we don't have any photos on the walls! It's actually an ongoing joke between us: I want him to make prints of some of his images and he (partly from misplaced modesty and partly because he says it's a pain to have good prints made from his digital files) doesn't do it . . . I'm going to tell him you asked!

We just did a soup-to-nuts renovation of our one-bedroom apartment, so this question has been much on my mind for the past several months. In such a small space, comfort and functionality are key, and are the bones of our place. We have very specific needs and our house now is perfectly functional, which pleases me to no end, and definitely says something about us. We love to cook, and our tiny kitchen now actually works and is a lovely, pleasant, easy to clean space. We have huge libraries of books, vinyl records (my husband is a dj), and movies and games - all housed in purposefully chosen shelving (Ok, the books are still spilling over a tiny bit!). We have a ridiculous amount of electronics - large tvs and home theater systems in both the living room and bedroom, a full dj set-up, three computers (one that we built ourselves), every current generation game console, dvd players, apple tv, sirius radio... These are things we love and we've managed to create organized and attractive space for all of this. We are now in the process of choosing the finishing touches - art, color, lighting... I want it to be stimluating, inspiring and entertaining. Multi-faceted. Just like us! :)
  • Lisa D. · 1 year ago
Thank you so much for your reply and wisdom! You really nailed it by mentioning 'delayed gratification.' I remind myself that raising healthy kids is more important than wall color! They will feel less threatened over the years so I'll work my style in when I can. I take delight in dressing myself instead of dressing my home for now.

Oh come on in, let's chat for a while. Tell me about your life.
I want it to be comfortable, inviting, cozy and warm. Nothing pretentious, nothing fancy, nothing in excess, except for friendship, acceptance and love. But I also absolutely want it to be simple, clean, uncluttered. What is out and on display are things that we, without a doubt, love or use.
  • Erin · 1 year ago
Twenty-something single (somewhat girly) girl who clearly loves shoes, clothes and magazines. Note that clutter-free/minimalist isn't part of this description. Ever-evolving / never done (but full ideas - full of colorful, stylish seeds of potential). On a journey far from home but cherishing every step along the way, and definitely not afraid to take risks in life and in style. Bright, warm, and creative; freakishly organized, but still loves "stuff". My home says, "this girl will someday have that home you love to linger and be a houseguest in - but today, she might be a little more focused on her career and social life. And clothes..and shoes."

I'd LIKE for my home to one day say a little more zen, a little more "have a seat in my haven", and a lot more "nest for love and family". But right now, I'd say that my home is an accurate reflection of me - whether I like it or not - so what more could I ask for?

As a home-decor writer and scout for magazines, my home is an important part of my life and the common denominator of the feed-back from those who enter is always... "I could stay forever. It's so calming and serene, comfortable and cozy.' All wonderful adjectives that confirms when you do what feels right for you, others recognize that immediately.

I just bought the tiniest house and i'm in between deciding to just put all my kitch stuff out there and have my house saying that i'm a small girl in a grown ups body or to actually grow up and choose for a little more sophisticated look...
In the end i guess it will turn out to be the house were snowwhite and the seven dwarfs lived in with my junk from all over the world in it but with a real at homw feeling...

i was afraid of color when i was younger...no longer. i was interviewed for an online house tour, and really had to think about my design philosophy. in essence: i need quiet colors as background, texture to break up the abundant natural light, objects that permit daydreaming of times past, and paintings and photographs and drawings on every wall. i operate best in organized chaos, and when in the midst of mad creation, i cover every flat surface with my experiments. i often pull out my ironing board when i run out of table tops, and tape fabric manipulations on my patio doors to get a different perspective on the current concept/direction. homes evolve..."shelves once overflowing with Ninja turtles, sketchbooks, fire trucks, water guns, microscopes, and required reading are now quiet with folded silks and linens."
  • Jess · 1 year ago
Walking in one mi casa, one would see an array of ecclectic mixes between the old and the new. My house would probably say, "Creativity, dumped furniture meets refurbishment, artistic, bold, quirky, adventurous, & quiet." I doubt my house would say anything about consistent organization or dust-bunny free...
