Carrie and Danielle: What would you like to revolutionize?

  • Get Togetha · 1 year ago
I would like to revolutionize the time and support that is given to women when having a kid. I witnessed the horror of our insurance system in "The Business of Being Born."

C-sections peaking at 5pm and 11pm because Doc wants to go home and have dinner?
  • Get Togetha · 1 year ago
Fast Food is what it is: Trash Food. The proof is in the Aftermath of Morbid Obesity, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and a host of other preventable diseases because of poor nutrition information in our schools.

HELLO EVERYBODY! A quick interruption to say that we've had, uh technical difficulties today. Our geeks have been toiling away and the Daily and blog will be smooth and inspiring very soon! Thanks for everyone who cared enough to say, "I neeed my Q&A;!"

Hey Get Togetha, I just check out your blog.

    Beautiful.

    I don't do paper plates either. Non-negotiable.

I would like to revolutionise the way people shop, persuading them to shop locally at independent shops rather than big supermarkets and shopping malls. As well as being good for the environment, it also engenders a sense of community that I'm afraid we are in danger of losing.
  • Get Togetha · 1 year ago
Thanks so much Danielle. It's a work in progress.

Education. I'm a total socialist when it comes to education. Everyone should be able to afford higher education, and teachers must be more valued and paid!! I was not able to afford my last four college credits, never graduated, and still spent over 10 years struggling under student loans.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
I would like to revolutionize the way North America seems to see itself as 'the good' and everything other as 'the bad'. I believe until the governments in the Western world, especially in the United States, but in Canada too, stop acting like God is on their side against 'the evil doers' there will never be peace in the world. We must own our own shadows - own that we are both good and evil as is everyone in the entire world.
What makes me angry about another person is the very thing I've disowned in myself.
  • Kelly · 1 year ago
I would like to revolutionalize "giving" and the financial support given to non-for-profit organizations. Enough of the gift bags, gimmicks, give-aways - just do the right thing by writing the cheque!
  • andrea · 1 year ago
    time management.

Despite the "amazing technology" that we are so lucky to have at our fingertips, we have less time today for anyone. I feel the "tug" of the blackberry/iphone world but am resisting and hanging on by my fingernails to "not go there".

The human part of humanity is being gobbled up by technology that keeps us working around the clock. Balance, like a deep breath, is needed as it relates to our societies use of time.
  • verysheri · 1 year ago
The Education System! I've thought teachers should be revered in the highest class of profession with pay scales equal to doctors and lawyers. Not because I'm one, or that there are even any teachers in my extended family; I just see it as a huge injustice. In many cases, teachers are spending more time with children than their own parents, shouldn't we strive to serve them as well as they can serve our young? So rare is it that I meet a young person who is inspired by school, or admits that a teacher motivates them to be better person (on any level). This is one of many examples of how America is failing to provide for it's future.

Women's health care guidelines with regard to the real issues we face and have them addressed appropriately.
  • Dayna · 1 year ago
The first thing that comes to mind for me is the attitude people have about breastfeeding. I'm pro bf whether it is someone doing it conservatively in public with something like a little blanket, nursing shirt, etc. and don't think it should be outlawed or looked down upon. I also am pro-nursing as long as the mother and baby are happy with it. BF one of my babies until he was 2.5 and don't regret if for a minute.

Women who don't go for it. Women are all beautiful, strong and capable - of at least reaching for their potential. Know it and go for it.

Our attitudes towards the menstrual cycle and thus the entire eco-system of the female body. (including the way we give or are forced to give birth) My revolution would teach girls and women that learning to understand our menstrual and fertility cycles is a life skill we shouldn't be without. Our blood is the source of our beauty, power, confidence, energy and creativity. Our blood is the giver of life and protector of all women's health.

I'd like to see the US Constitution rewritten to include the rights of nature. With it's current bias towards privileging corporate entities, I don't see how we can address the ecological nightmare we're creating....

Housing, housing, housing! It is impossible to feel or read anything about what makes a house a home without realizing how much the standard North American home fails.

I was reading reader comments today on an article about communities of cottages. The readers were dismissing the idea outright because they believe the myth that bigger means better when it comes to homes. But the fact of the matter is that these bigger homes contradict nearly everything we know about what makes for happy stable communities.

Big front yards get rid of the human scale of the street and make it impossible to walk down the street and just say "hi". Having a TV in every room destroys the quality of family life. Current zoning laws that should be used for keeping disruptive, dangerous businesses out of neighborhoods prevent neighborhoods from having grocery stores and other needs within walking distance. An obsession on home prices causes people to focus on treating their house as a piece to be preserved rather than a home (and encourages the desire to always upgrade, decreasing the stability of communities). Mass produced communities have removed all individuality from our homes.

Instead of making our home into someplace we love, we have turned the home into an investment and a commodity. We have turned them into bunkers against the outside world rather than a vantage point from which we can interact with the outside world. We have turned home into just another building.

Simple ideas to revolutionize the way people accumulate, retain and dispose of stuff: reduce reuse recycle. I am trying to do my part but everyday catch myself in the bad habits that have accumulated over a lifetime of not knowing any better and not being conscious of my impact on my environment.

Would also revolutionize the education system -- teaching kids self-esteem, emplowerment, wonderment, and to value their individuality.
  • Kristin (The Goat) · 1 year ago
I would like to go back in time and bring back common courtesy. In this technology world when half of the people have a phone in their ear holding doors, saying Thank You and just acknowledging the other people in the world is being ignored.

I have been doing my part by being present when I am out in public. I say hello to people when they look at me, I hold doors, I say "after you," and I say Thank You. I keep hoping that others will do the same, more often.
  • Kirsty · 1 year ago
Joanne, I'll carry your microphone with that message. I'd also tack on the idea of challenging people to think about what they really need versus what they really want. I've worked in one of the poorest countries in the world and witnessed what people need to achieve happiness while the same country's upper class struggled to translate and interpret Western consumerism into their own culture. I don't believe we shouldn't shop or buy nice things; I just think it's important to ask where it comes from, how it was made and how much do I need?
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
Ah yes! Don't get Carrie and me started on GIFT BAGS. It's an epidemic of crap that nobody really wants and definitely doesn't need.

I not complaining. My time zone means I usually do it just before I go to bed and the day before. That what comes of living in New Zealand. Today (Friday) I,ve just got up and am drinking my morning latte.

I hope no one bans coffee because of the food miles it travels to get to my coffee machine BECAUSE THEN THERE WOULd BE A REVOLUTION
  • Kirsty · 1 year ago
I like that phrase: Mass produced communities have removed all individuality from our homes. I wish our Ontario politicians considered the individuality of ones' home in their next election platform as an affront to both the environment and the social fabric of our communities and families.

The way women feel about their bodies. Or, the why, I guess. We need to be liberated and celebrate not criticize our bodies, be grateful for what we have, including the power to change what we don't like, or to disregard ideals that are imposed on us.

Vacation time. In the UK, it's 5 weeks minimum - to start (you don't have to work an entire bloody year before eligibility) PLUS all the bank holiday week-ends. America does NOT give the working person enough time off! And employers' attitudes towards time off is terrible. I have to beg and plead and arrange my time off around everyone else's schedule but MINE!
  • Jennifer Sage · 1 year ago
good comments There are some really good Books on this subject under the title of the Not so Big House by the American author Susan (can't remember how to spell her surname starts with S).
My other Bible on all that is great on house and community design is an old classic called A Pattern Language. 3 authors the first of which is Christopher Alexander
If you google around the associated web sites or on Amazon they meet up in the reading lists and references. Anyone who is serious about house design needs to read these books. Some architects loathe them just because and informed customer is in the driving seat

I would like to revolutionize the way women are treated around the world. there is evidence of gross poverty, violence, etc...and it makes me ill for my global sisters.

I would like to see the pace slow down. I think there is a lot to be said for at least ONE evening at home, doing "nothing". Spending time with family, talking to one another, listening, spending time remembering, or planning, or just watching nature. Slow down.
    Oh -- and common courtesy.
Oh oh -- and the lost art of using a turn signal when driving!
  • Erika · 1 year ago
Definitely aware of both, although I haven't read any of the Not So Big House books yet. Thanks for the pointer!

Hear hear! I think "rediscover, rebuild, and strengthen" community could be what ties many of these things together.

People thinking further than just themselves. In the big picture, but also in the little things. Like holding the door for the person behind you, not littering, and walking all the way to the back of the bus to allow more passengers to fit (especially in rush hour - we're all just trying to get to work!). Everyone following The Golden Rule + "what if EVERYONE did that, would things be better" (I think that was MLK Jr.)

    1. The way we refuse to acknowledge the amount of childhood sexual abuse that actually occurs in this country - and around the world.

    2. I would like to see true freedom of religion.

    3. I agree with Carrie - not only the petroleum products but the amount of corn by-products used in the production of most of what we eat....even soft drinks are no longer sweetened with sugar, but with high-fructose corn syrup. Disassemble the corn conglomerate and go back to balanced farmland and whole foods, folks!

Timely access to healthcare, for everyone regardless of ability to pay -- that includes lowering wait-times for those of us blessed to be in a country that has programs in place to pay for universal healthcare. Resources deployed in such a manner that all branches of the medical profession are fully staffed, and able to do their jobs.

Worldwide Transportation - from cars to ocean shipping, it's all about how we get oursleves and the products we buy from A-B and beyond.

My revolutionary magic wand would see all countries employing clean energy that does not threaten the stability of our planet.

I'd revolutionize the education, healthcare, and housing systems, and poverty in the U.S. My mother taught jr./high school for 32 years in the 'hood in D.C. because the need was there. She, like so many other teachers, was never paid a fraction of what she was worth.

Piggybacking on that would be our obsession with all that entertains us, which certainly includes Hollywood. I'd revolutionize the value of self-worth so that we didn't have to look to movie "stars" to see how we measure up.
  • Jen · 1 year ago
In response to Carrie's comment today, I would also like to recommend the cookbook, "The Splendid Table". It's wonderful. All about real food and real food cooking!

    totally!
I just listened to a story on the radio this morning how the YWCA of Vancouver has a rooftop garden that had originally been a garden of trees etc but that they recently turned into a vegetable and fruit producing garden sanctuary.

All of the produce that they grow is given to the less fortunate women and children of East Vancouver who don't have access to fresh and organic fruits and vegetables. According to the representative that was speaking about the garden, everything from carrots and lettuce to raspberries and blueberries are being grown.

If architects and urban designers were really clever they would quickly turn more rooftops into "green" rooftops

Everything we need is already inside of us born or unborn it is all there.
That is the potent power of your style statement. It can create a field around us that serves ourselves best and others are served too.

I agree wholeheartedly. Having a Treo or Blackberry makes us blur the line between home and work life. No one can really "be in the moment" because so many of us are anticipating e-mails & voice mails. For all the overcommunciation we do, we have lost the ability to connect on a human level. I want to slow down! Can't we just exhale and be okay with NO productivity to speak of???

American politics. (I know, HUGE thing to even fathom.) Medical care (abysmal currently), respect for the aged, education, the environment, the excess, especially waste - those are the biggies with me. Since moving to Europe I've realised the inadequacies of the American system, and the way things are continues to feed the ignorance to how good things could be. Huge props to those who are doing something about it - my cousin, who has run for office a few times; my brother, who works for a union; my mother, who was a teacher for 30+ years - those are the real heroes.

I don't like the word 'evil'. It has religious overtones that I find offensive. I prefer Jung's shadow - those unowned parts of ourselves that we need to bring to consciousness.

Another way of looking at it is to think of transforming our negativity; i.e blame, resentment, judgement of ourselves and others, etc. I believe this inner work is of vital importance not only to the one doing the work but also to the wider human community.

Can you imagine what the world would be like if we all did this work? I believe there would be no wars! What an awesome, mind boggling thought.

I'd like to revolutionize the horse racing industry. Being a horse person for many years and involved in rescue, I can see so much room for innovation and improvement for racing thoroughbreds in the industry.
  • Tara · 1 year ago
So many things that need to be done - where do you start? In Australia the social security system needs a huge overhaul - women are given $5000 for each baby they have, but alot of them blow it straight away, and don't use it for the care of the child. They should be given the payment in vouchers, that way they can't use it to buy cigarettes or drugs or put it down the slot machines.
And the 'childrens menus' at restaurants - excuse me but my children don't enjoy the choice between nuggets and chips or fish fingers and chips! Surely the chefs can come up with something better than that, it would save me having request that the chef be able to adapt some of the 'adult selections' to suit my kids.

I have a career in telecommunications. It alarms me that everyone is constantly on their cell phone, texting, and calling just to see what's happening. Real communication is postponed and people become anxious because they haven't heard back from someone for 15 minutes. I think this leaves everyone in a blur and very unsatisfied. Let someone know when and where you will meet. When you will be available. Don't get caught up in the junk and costly non-communication jungle. Make a decision and stick to it. There will be more clear communication, less interuptions and you will suddenly have more real time to think and be. Get to clear communication and turn off that cell phone.

I second your thought...or third it, or fourth it! If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it! I'm not sure if you every saw Jamie Oliver's special on revolutionizing the British school cafeteria system but it was horrifying. Some of the children did not even know what broccoli was because they had never seen it before. There's something to say for 'eating clean'. I picked up a new magazine this week that is actually called 'Clean Eating' and loved what it had to say.

Ditto. My Swiss friend got his whole degree in architecture for... free. Med school...free. What an equalizer and liberator free education is. With free education and health care, we'd be on our way to utopia.

And while we're socializing the fundamental rights...I'd love to see a system where ADOPTION was not so cost prohibitive. There are many loving, conscious families who can't shell out $30-$50k to adopt a child, but who have the resources to care for them in every way.

What a beautiful world it would be if that thought process could be changed at a 360 degree.

Good luck if you can even get 6 weeks- and forget about getting paid while you're off. The health care system is the US is a total disgrace. That is what I would revolutionize. And it's not like we have to reinvent the wheel here, you know. So many other countries are already doing it right. And the fact that your employment is tied to your health insurance is the worst thing ever. My husband has a sales rep out of work for 7-8 weeks because she broke her ankle. She only had accumulated enough vacation time to pay her through the first couple of weeks. Beyond that, she was facing not getting paid at all while she's supposed to be recovering. Luckily for her, my husband and some co-workers donated portions of their own paid vacation time to her so that she can continue to recuperate with her income intact. The lesson here in the States is Don't get Sick, Don't have an accident, it's every man for himself, and if you're not independently wealthy you are screwed.

Most states have horse rescues and some even have hooved animal humane societies (Ohio, Illinois and Missouri have them). Other good orgs to check out are ReRun, Rolling Dog Ranch, Old Friends Equine, Standardbred Retirement Foundation and Ryerss retirement home for horses. Of course, anyone with two nickles to rub together can start a rescue - so as with any charity, you have to check them out. Most places will certainly let you sponsor one of their horses - a great gift for a horse-y child at Christmas!

I would like to make a shift in womens consciousness. We waste out time and intellect on purely superficial interests. When we think about living life to the full, it is suddenly food related. Sadly because that is always on our mind. Freedom is not being able to eat heaps of chocolate, it is to be able to fulfill your potential and use that godgiven intellect. It is to be a part of society , voicing opinions in debates and politics. Freedom is to raise your voice and be heard! I am tired of hearing about diets and " oh, I feel sooo fat"! Start loving yourself and make the world your main interest! Carpe diem!

Loving, guilt free self-care for women - to change the thinking that self-care is selfish, but rather reframing this to a higher truth which is that self-care is wisdom alive in our lives. It is a loving act to truly show up and nurture and replenish ourselves on all levels - body, mind, heart and spirit. In my world of work - part of what I do is help people to heal from burnout and so often the path that has one arriving in a state of complete depletion began with the single steps away from self-care and self-love. I would revolutionize how we often put self-care and selfish in the same sentence - since this is a psychological sabbotage that gets in the way from really caring for ourselves. No one wants to be selfish - yet we all need and deserve to be happy and healthy and whole - these states, in my experience, come in part from daily loving self-care in the midst of all the roles we fulfill as women. We can do it...healthy, loving self-care is the place that the rest of our lives and roles flow from...self-care says - "I am important and valuable and I am my best self, best mother, best spouse, best human...when I am honouring myself through self-care." then this ripple of our one healthy vital self...is unstoppable in advancing everything else we want to revolutionize :)) with love from a self-care enthusiast, lynda
