Carrie and Danielle: What is something completely luxurious that you dream of owning?

  • Natasha L · 1 year ago
    a vintage porsche.
  • Linda · 1 year ago
A beautiful French inspired home on the ocean with a sandy beach to walk on..........oh and a cream convertable Bentley in the driveway, an older one, don't like the new models.............that's it.
  • Connie · 1 year ago
I'd love a lifetime, limitless gift certificate at Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com. That to me would be the height of luxury. I also wouldn't mind a lovely laptop.
  • Carol · 1 year ago
A Jeanneau 45' DS Sailboat (with a slip in downtown Vancouver of course) and lots of free time to go sail the Pacific Coast with my honey - preferably somewhere with no cell reception.
  • Joanne · 1 year ago
A car and driver, available 24/7.
  • Kath · 1 year ago
Danielle, I completely agree with you about the Rothko, a piece of luxury that would be endlessly exciting and inspiring. Although I've never yet seen one that would fit into my 'small but perfectly formed' one-bedroom flat. So... I'd also like a palazzo overlooking the Grand Canal in Venice please...
  • Angela · 1 year ago
The Anne Cottage on Mackinac Island, MI. It's for sale, furnished, for roughly $3 million. Of course I'd like to be in a financial position where I could afford to spend the whole summer there enjoying the place........
  • Angela · 1 year ago
Oooooooh! Good one! Amazon.com is my devil, always tempting me!
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
Please don't judge me for my (imaginary, luxurious) carbon footprint...but a Hawker Beechcraft King Air (with pilot, please) so I can fly to Portugal for the weekend or down to London for dinner with friends without messing around with airports. Clad in Prada and wearing Manolos, of course.
  • Debbie · 1 year ago
a high quality cashmere blanket. But I do like Carrie's "time and money to experience life".
  • Jennifer Sage · 1 year ago
Seven Rennee Bassetti shirts in all my best colors.
Five made to measure bootleg trousers with a bit of stretch for comfort. Heels to go with them
Three amazing jackets each one more stunning than the last Made in NZ. I don't need these for work so I can push the boat out here a bit stylewise
Custom made perfume just for me.
Two exquisite rings with aqua colored stones and gold also made in NZ.
It will just take time and these will all be mine.
Delayed gratification is good for the soul and gets the planning perfect
My husband Bob sends you all his regards. We had a great 30th wedding celebration last Sunday. 30 people, spring sunshine, yummy food, a lovely friend who brought his rocket coffee machine, lovely flowers. Being with good friends is a gift you cannot put a price on. You can't buy it
  • Jess · 1 year ago
Subscriptions to my favourite magazines. My own personal gym/fitness instructor to do classes with me whenever I want.
And I'd have to agree with Carrie...more time and money would be awesome...I could take trips to see the boyfriend without worrying about denting the bank :)
  • Emily-Sarah · 1 year ago
Absolutely time and money would be the luxurious gift I'd request. With those two, anything else is possible. I'm also like Carrie in that I'm not after acquiring more things that would require management (more time and money!). More time and money equal freedom, limitless possibilities, and endless options on experiencing life on this earth (and I'd help others during the process too).
  • Chantal · 1 year ago
A hacienda in Santa Fe - large beautiful compound of 3 or 4 homes with a central courtyard. Very Frida Kahlo. One home for living, one for studio space and 2 for my friends to share the dream.
  • Tammy · 1 year ago
The money and guilt-free attitude to have a full-blown deep tissue massage on a weekly basis. Every single week- how fabulous would that be?
  • Princess · 1 year ago
This is a perplexing question because off the top of my head nothing, so let me ponder this for a moment..... If could own something luxious it would probably be a home or villa somewhere beautiful like Hawaii or Paris that had all the aminities and toys one could think of so that my family and I could play endlessly when ever we wanted.

So, I guess the real answer would be time & money to play with, so that my family and I could enjoy life and the way everyone should get to at least one point or period of time in there life.
  • Wazzy · 1 year ago
A hot tub. Surrounded by plants, with nice lighting at night.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
    BONJOUR MES AMIS!

Esy. A villa in Tuscany and my own private jet.

    Cécile
  • Kathleen · 1 year ago
    An Hermes Birkin bag.
  • Xai Vicente Charles · 1 year ago
I agree with Carrie because I too long for more time and definitely more money so I could experience life the way I see it in my mind.

However, I do covet a modern eco-friendly house(designed by me)on many acres of land mortgage free of course near the ocean. I would fill my house with original art from my favorite artists. I need to stop here because this post will be VERY long.
  • CC · 1 year ago
A NetJets membership & my own private island similar to Guana Island, BVI.
  • Girl-Woman · 1 year ago
A cashmere throw in which to snuggle during the long, cold winter while reading.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
My log cabin on the Atlantic ocean furnished with all the things I love including a garden that doesn't mind salt AND the money and TIME to truly live in it ALONE, in good health with a vintage Porsche in the driveway and a Peek-a-Pom to walk and talk with me.
  • JoeM · 1 year ago
Five acres, with a small cottage and deep water dock sitting on the James River, within half a mile of the Chesapeake Bay. Of course having a nice 466 Hunter Ketch rigged out for single-handed sailing parked at the dock would make it even better. Sigh.
  • Vix · 1 year ago
Summers off from June 30th - Sept 5th - so i could live in my dream home, by the sea shore, in the caribbean, away from it all or with family and friends popping by decorated by a designer
  • Janice Briggs · 1 year ago
Carrie, it sounds like you should be on one of my La Dolce Vita Retreats. You just described them -"Travel, massages, fabulous restaurants, yoga retreats." Plus, we have great faculty!

As for me, I'd probably like to own a private jet so I could get to all of the places in a more serene way.

    Warm regards,
    Janice
  • Candis · 1 year ago
Danielle always inspires me to dream big.
I would love property by the sea. with a garden that heals and feeds. A studio in the barn. An extra cottage for my friends. The time to nurture the garden myself, and a kick ass espresso maker!
    See you there!
  • weezie · 1 year ago
I'm greedy - I want all of the above! But would settle for:
    1) Luxury-class travel anywhere, anytime
    2) An original Elisabeth Estivalet
    3) Diamond cuff bracelet
  • Candis · 1 year ago
    Me again....
and some Hunter rubber boots so I can weed in Style!
  • Kelly · 1 year ago
A villa in Tuscany so I can indulge in the wonderfully flavorful local produce washed down with a good bottle of red wine - can you imagine anything more fabulous than fresh tomatoes and basil every day!
  • Ginger · 1 year ago
-an open beautiful loft in New York with walls suited for large original art (Danielle I saw a Rothko exhibit in NYC years ago...beautiful...the Exhibit Book is on my coffee table)
-a weekend house on the beach or with a great ocean view/access
    -both co-designed with architects, designers
-financially secure to support both without burden and have money left over for travel (and maybe a personal cook and a personal yoga/pilates trianer)
  • DHayes · 1 year ago
A small cabin ~2 hrs from home--close enough to spend regular weekends there with my family but far enough that I really feel like we've gotten away from the routine, errands, and small household chores that seem to suck up so much of my 'free' time. Also fresh flowers delivered weekly and a Style Statement (so far I haven't managed to justify the investment in something so clearly just for me)
  • Kirsty · 1 year ago
An Airstream classic, custom-designed, and hauled by a bio-diesel truck. For all my road-worthy adventures!

    I concur.
  • Ruth S. · 1 year ago
A personal hair and makeup stylist.
  • Get Togetha · 1 year ago
I'm there with Carrie. Owning and managing trivial things is not my idea of fun. I'll take a full body massage, trips to South Africa, Morocco, and Paris...and plenty of yoga retreats for me and the hubby.

I would like to own a painting by Kehinde Wiley or a photograph by Gordon Parks.
  • Uncle Beefy · 1 year ago
    Yes indeed.
  • Uncle Beefy · 1 year ago
OOh...that sounds quite lovely, Chantal. Let me know if you're in the market for friends when you get your hacienda! ;)
  • Uncle Beefy · 1 year ago
Joannie...that sounds very serene and peaceful. Lovely.
  • Daniel Gibbons · 1 year ago
I'm a huge car fan, and I love Maseratis, so I'd have to say a Maserati 5000GT. A total of 34 were built between 1959 and 1965, each one custom-made for its owner, and one was sold at auction last year for $1.1 million...
  • Nancy · 1 year ago
I would wish most for a chateau (castle) in the Loire Valley. Close enough to Paris that I could still enjoy the city still a country atmosphere which I find relaxing and tranquil. I would also like my own jet so that I could go anywhere I wished with a moments notice.
  • Amy Guth · 1 year ago
I want a tiny cabin in a scenic place within a few hours of my home, where I can slip away from time to time and enjoy the quiet.
  • Uncle Beefy · 1 year ago
Hmmmm, travel would be such a biggie for me...but maybe now just bumped up in the comfort department! I'd love to have a beautifully finished art studio to work out of next to my home. I'd have to deck my house out a little, not make it bigger but more polished. And indulging in some original fine art by a favorite artist or two would be lovely. Lastly, a trainer (though I'm trying to discern if that is really a want or a need?!) and maybe a personal chef to keep things in line. But both of 'em better hit the road when I wanna whip up a batch of cupcakes! Or bust out a bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Ahhhhhh.
  • lisaohhh · 1 year ago
a personal masseuse with daily appointments!!! (or a personal head rubber with nightly appts. i have to bribe, beg or cajole my husband! i want someone who is paid to do it and does it with glee.) ;)
  • jen · 1 year ago
As I read today's question and thought to myself, I am 100% content. I am currently in bed w/ my comforter, my cup of steaming french roast coffee, looking out over my pool and canyon with giant trees. My house is not large. Our two daughters are grown and are healthy, so is my best friend, my husband.

Life is good. Pool or no pool, life is good. Okay, throw in a gorgeous being cashmere wrap and I'm good to go.

    Great answers from all.

    A tennis club.

I forgot something: a personal assistant.
  • Rushmi · 1 year ago
A custom made coutier pant suit from Chanel - classic and clean...Then wearing my channel suit, I am in paris at the Ritz Carlton, overlooking the eiffel tower. Then I take my two daughters out for a night on the town in Paris - dinning, going to the show. Then I return to find my husband waiting for me with cavier and bubbly...Oh...I did get carried away on this fantasy...it all starts with the channel suit. Really, what I truly covet that is luxurious TIME + MONEY + HAPPINESS = fantasies come true.
  • Lucy · 1 year ago
Personal health insurance - then I could retire and read, play with grandchildren, lunch with friends, spend more time/energy working with the NFP camp-and-conference-center I love, sit on my patio as the sun comes up and drink tea, sit on my patio as the sun goes down and drink wine - just be me.
  • Amy · 1 year ago
Oooh yeah...personal trainer. Maybe he/she could get me off my butt!
  • Katie Kay · 1 year ago
A top drawer house in the Hamptons of course, Hee hee! No seriously...
  • Diane · 1 year ago
    My own jet so my son can fly me around the world vacationing. A Lamborghini Mercialago, for my son-he loves them! Mansion over looking the ocean on a mountain top. Personal trainer & chef. That about does it. :}
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
Nancy I have an idea!!! We can trade chateaus once a year!! You come to Tuscany and I will reside in Loire. How does that sound? After all, variety is the spice of life!!!! BTW do you have a landing strip? We need one, you know...

    Cécile
  • Lisa · 1 year ago
I would love to own a Birkin... I want to know what it's like to have $15k hanging from your shoulder!
  • L'Tanya · 1 year ago
Standing reservations at the Greenbrier in WV.
    A summer home in Portugal.
    A personal assistant.
A store-sized art studio with the best sewing machine, yarns and fabrics from around the world.
  • MoJo · 1 year ago
A home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright - or Howard Roark from the Fountainhead :-) Filled with cozy, sensual but highly functional furniture and a few seriously wicked works of art (I definitely second the Rothko motion!) and some pieces by Phillipe Starck to zen it out a bit. And a personal chef/home-logistics-runner. And personal clothing/knitwear/jewelry designer who could arrange for the production of whatever piece I've decided I can't live without and can't find anywhere. And a late 60's Karmann Ghia Cabriolet...

Wow - I need to start one of those style files...
  • Gail Larsen · 1 year ago
A scenic "soilmate," someone festive to care for my land and gardens. My own Pilates reformer and a personal trainer to work with me twice a week. An infrared sauna. An "office angel" to support my business while being a great friend to me and my two aging dachshunds. At 60 it's all about support and community to be nourished in bringing our gifts to the world!
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
A stone cottage overlooking the ocean with lots of fireplaces and all modern amenities. And a heated swimming pool.
  • rock girl · 1 year ago
a mirror by Jay Strongwater - one of those round ones with the jewelled and gilt branch frames with the various flora and fauna all over it. I think they cost about $10,000 US.
  • Caren · 1 year ago
This is my favoritie reply. Being with friends and having fun is priceless. I also love custom-made perfume. I would add a personal supply of exotic flowers to arrange and places to gift them. Taking as many classes in the arts as possible and a closet organizer keeping me clutter free. (CULTIVATED BALANCE)
  • stella tinglin · 1 year ago
Probably a lifetime membership at a fabulous spa resort in an exotic location like Mexico or Hawaii.
  • Svetlana · 1 year ago
A vacation home. I love living in the city, but I cherish the memories of summers spent at my grandparents' a summer place by the beach as a kid, and would love to provide that for my own child, or at this rate, grandchildren.
  • Krystl · 1 year ago
Definitely sounds like you are someone who has worked out her style statement!
  • alligator_kate · 1 year ago
Like most people, I'd like a little cottage by the sea in an isolated spot, though I don't think that's outrageous. What IS outrageous is wanting 3 dogs in Manhattan-- I have a 40 lb mutt and a 20 lb rat terrier and would love an Irish Wolf Hound too (200 lbs?) -- an apartment big enough for the dogs near a big park, and with a vehicle big enough to transport the dogs (preferably on used fryer oil) and a second home in the country....

I like the old Bently idea. An old Bently could probably be made to run on mostly fryer oil...
  • alligator_kate · 1 year ago
I dream of hunter boots too :) I want silver ones... as I'm a city slicker gardener...
  • chantal · 1 year ago
    will do!
  • Laurel · 1 year ago
Hah! A 1966 Sunbeam Tiger. A Robert Genn painting. A Gordon Smith painting. And my very own piece of land to garden on.
  • Lisa M. · 1 year ago
I like this one too! Let's add a floathome to tie up to at Granville Island with a fridge full of French champers and cheeses.
  • Lisa M. · 1 year ago
So many vintage car lovers out there. That's very cool.
I'd like an airplane that runs on clean energy...with a cute salt & pepper pilot to fly it...and a bunch of Apple stocks that I bought for 5 cents back in the early 90's (to pay for it all).
  • Erika · 1 year ago
A library. A big, cozy, book filled, well organized library. A library that my friends love to sit in and browse through and borrow books from. The shelves would be built in and the lighting perfect.
  • Nancy · 1 year ago
Excellent idea Cécile! Let's do that! LOL! :)
  • Janet · 1 year ago
A scantily clad toy-boy to keep my house by day and work his magic on me at night!
  • Domestic Miss · 1 year ago
A Hermès saddle for my horse (and... well... for me!).
  • Kate · 1 year ago
A hairdresser every morning!! I would LOOOVVEE that - never have a bad/boring hair day again. And a personal chef to make healthy meals for me and my husband - too often we eat crap because we're too lazy to put thought into our meals.

Unlimited flights around the world for me and my husband.

And a luxurious 3 bedroom apartment in Paris (3 bedrooms so friends and family can come stay with us)
  • Ylen · 1 year ago
A house in Berkeley with big bay windows, glass ceilings, and french doors. Lots of sunlight. Beautiful garden. A wodden hot tub in the backyard.
  • kerrymac · 1 year ago
An indoor salt water lap pool would be my ultimate treat year round. I adore being in the water, swimming works well with my body. I despise crowds though and lots of things about the public pool. There is nothing worse than seeing a large hair clump pass by or having another swimmer bumping into you ceaslessly to wreck a good swim session. Like Danielle, I also get great joy from original art, the bigger the better. I used to run the art rentals department at a gallery I worked at and one day I hope to have a revolving collection or art via art rentals.

Me too! A prarie style house amoungst the trees would be paradise. We are currently working on house plans and I am torn. My hubbie loves arts and crafts and heaven forbid, some Victorian homes! I found a cool book called Country and Modern - contemporary interiors for rual settings by Dinah Hall.
Trying to find a middle ground, maybe Frank L.W with some classic hardy board and stone work...I have had a Style File for 10 years now and at times like this it's my lifeline. Plus ripping things you love from magazines is so liberating!

    My Home....free and clear
  • Diane · 1 year ago
Ok, so I wouldn't want to "own" this, but I would love to be able to hire a cleaning lady so I would never have to worry about keeping my house clean. While I'm at it, a cook would be nice too! Oohhh, and a landscaper.
  • Mary · 1 year ago
The ability to spend the summers with my kids and cousins at our cottage in Ontario, the way I did growing up. And the ability to restore the cottage to perfection - replace the old boathouse with a self sufficient cabin, add skylights, restore the old cedarstrip canoe, replace the old outboard with a greener alternative...that's luxury for me.
  • licarrit · 1 year ago
I would like an unlimited travel card -not that they make that but the idea of dropping everything and going to Tuscany on a whim. Actually I need the card and the concierge service to schedule all the other stuff that needs to be done!
  • licarrit · 1 year ago
Look at Wright's Usonian houses, all the pop, none of the tricky bits. Those houses tended to age better also.
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
Danielle - Wasn't that a Rothko on Mad Men this week? I wasn't familiar with the name until I read your response to today's question, so I Googled the name (Russian artist) and recognized the work immediately. It was interesting listening to the actors describe how it effected each of them... like you.

As for me, my lux dream includes: a chef, a totally gas free luxury car,
and best of all would be my beach house with the screened in porch that has a door that slams behind me, as I head out beyond the sea grasses and dunes, to the ocean where I walk for hours along the shore, collecting treasures scooped up between my bare toes - and then I curl up in a soft canvas hammock, back on that sun drenched porch with my dog eared copy of A Gift From The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindberg.. for grown up girls only... sigh.

Oh, I must continue.. I nap (something I never allow myself and long ones make me cranky). And when I wake, my sandy feet make their way to the white washed kitchen, where the chef has created my favourite thing in the world to eat after a day at the beach... a peanut butter and jam sandwich on thick slices of home-made, yeasty bread. It's a childhood thing that reminds me of my mother - whom I miss more today than yesterday.
  • Candy Lee · 1 year ago
Time! It's a luxury that I would love to have as a commodity..! (Although I haven't quite figured out what I will do with all this spare time yet..)

But practically speaking, I'd love a summer condo on Vancouver Island - then I can paddle all season long and have a beautiful place to escape to if I need some quiet 'me' time.
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
Mary... I'm Canadian too and moved from T.O. about fifteen years ago (an hour north). Funny how cottage memories never leave you and just thinking of a day there can evoke strong emotions. I hope you realize your dream. It sounds attainable. Have you taken any steps to make it happen?
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago

It helps to be 61. Most of my life was like a mirror without a style statement to name it. My clothes were a walking talking disaster zone.

Talking to Carrie was the spring board I needed (or you could call her and the Style Statement the steady breeze). Took careful and determined planning. Read a few books. Brenda Kinsel is helpful here for the hopelessly badly dressed. Trust me here i am not putting myself down, I'm telling the truth.
Everyone can see the difference. The medical director of the hospice where I work said "If I did not know you I would be sure you are having an affair" Total strangers (male) approach me and set about describing my personality to me. So my life has taken some surprizing turns since I started to dress myself boldly and gracefully.
    Peace and grace to you
    Jennifer

The cottage experience is irreplaceable. When you hear stress management techniques about visualizing, I always think of sitting on the dock in the morning with a coffee, looking at the lake sparkling in the sun. Ahhhh. Or listening to the loons as I drift off to sleep.

"Lochend" is a shared property now with 4 cousins and my brother(and families). I can usually swing 2 weeks with my family, but we now live in Vancouver and though getting east is a priority, it's quite an investment now. I've been looking at alternatives to extending our stay and next year I hope to swing it. Thanks for asking.

We flew to Vancouver a couple of Christmases ago to see our daughter who was working there (from California) for a few months. We fell in love the second our feet hit the ground. While there, I tried to win the lottery house and was convinced I'd win it (White Rock). I didn't. Guess the building is crazy for the Olympics, eh?

So I've been thinking about this all day and I have to agree with Carrie. More time and money is what I dream about having. More time to read the books I want to read, travel to places I want to visit, learn the things I want to learn. And more money to take care of those around me that need the support.
  • Colleen Overman · 1 year ago
I love these questions! You guys rule. Keep us dreaming. A delightful beach house on Coronado (San Diego) with a pool even though it is within steps of the beach. The house would have lots of character and charm though be thoroughly updated. Mediterranean. Lots of blues and greens on the walls. Equipped with housekeeping. And a convertible, to leave there for the occasional drive away from my vacation home! Though I imagine I might spend most of my time in the ocean, at the pool/hot tub, or in the house!
  • Kris · 1 year ago
Luxury for me would be space. A house with a decent-sized kitchen and a pantry, situated on an acre of land where I could garden to my heart's content, in the same climate (semi-coastal Southern California) where I live now.

More attainably, someday I'd love to have a necklace and matching earrings of cultured pearls. They're something beautiful that would make me feel beautiful every time I wore them.

Radiant floor heating. Imagine toasty toes all winter long... and no cold spots, or vents, or dry air blowing around. Yum!

The designer furniture and art that I love seems to be always out of my budget! A houskeeper for sure - and the money to travel more. I don't care much for luxury accomodation, but first class flights would be very luxurious - living in Australia its a long way to fly anywhere, especially in cattle class!
  • Steve · 1 year ago
Well...my list couldn't be any longer!

First, digital wallpaper so I can change the colour of my walls at will.

Second, a personal tailor with unlimited budget.

    Third, a teleporter.

Four, an ostrich boa for Friday nights!
  • Jen · 1 year ago
I would live in a sustainable home like you see in Dwell Magazine, buy Kimberly Christenson's abstract paintings, and as many pieces of Evla Pottery I could. Go to every locally owned boutique, restaurant, and organic farmer in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area . Maybe some beautiful handmade furniture. Someone who organizes my life and business. Definitely have my hair shampooed and brushed once a week . Other than myself washing it. Oh and lots of foot massages and speed dating.

Ive always wanted to own a Tag Heur watch. I had a lawyer friend that had one, and for years I thought I would like one but could not justify the cost for a watch. But now seeing you have asked, I have just given myself permission and I was going to get one when I finish my Master's Degree God damn it I'm going to buy myself one now. I dont have a watch at the moment that works !
p.s. Know where I can get a deal?
    Cheers,
    Deb

A house--not too big, but with room enough for myself and potential family to live in, and to have a decent studio in, etc--surrounded by trees, with water nearby, and mountains easily visible. Preferably few close neighbors, but somewhere not too far from a city, because I love going to museums and galleries and libraries and shopping and just the feeling of being in a city, sometimes, too.

A cashmere sweater would be lovely! In a deep, rich, royal blue. I wouldn't say no to a Rainforest, either. I have some wild, rich fantasy about being the lady of a forest. The forest is MINE, and nobody can cut it down! Muahahahaa...

    Where to start...
    1) a private luxury jet
    2) a Victorian home on the water
    3) an in home theater
    4) a personal library
    5) a luxurious dressing room
    6) a writer's haven - I have recently been dreaming of creating a place where writers can work and inspire each other: with fully equipped rooms for writing, a cafe/bistro, resource room, meeting spaces, etc...
