Carrie and Danielle: What is a Completely Outrageous Thing You Want to do This Year?

  • Karen · 10 months ago
It may not sound outrageous, but I'm going to start dating again. After months of therapy, I've finally figured out why I keep dating King Baby over and over--now, I'm going to set my sights on finding someone who I don't have to mother. That seems outrageous, given our culture's dedication to raising up Peter Pans, doesn't it?

Good for you, Karen! My tip? Find people who bring out the best in YOU!
  • Alison · 10 months ago
Gah, that change sounds like so. much. fun!

I would like to sell the house we've lived in for 48 years... a lovely, loving, beautiful, old Queen Anne Victorian built in 1896. We lived in an upstairs apartment when first married, then purchased the home in l965, and turned it back into a single family dwelling over the next few years. We raised our three children here. In l966, the home was added to the National Register of Historic Places, after 2 years of research! It's time for us to move to a more modest, simple home... maybe even a one story! The problem is that the home is almost as much a part of our lives & family as any family member! Also, the house is a bit needy.... we are often painting or repairing something... but always loving the house. What to do?!?!?!

"Sell, baby, sell!" That's what I'd say to anyone, but you are my mom and that was my house... tough when it's your own backyard! You have to do what's best for you and Dad, and that sounds like letting go of a place that you've honored, cared for beautifully, and thoroughly enjoyed for nearly half a century. Make life easier. You deserve it. xoxo (we could have a party!)

Change is scary, but its well worth it: Your family and life is developing, so it seems that its time to choose an environment that's better suited to both. You're seeing the signs: I think its wise to act upon them. I'm sure you'll become very happy and settled once you've updated your lifestyle to suit your needs!

Skydive! Go back to Italy! Be more honest! (too many times I get mad at myself for hiding behind some fake personality to make people like me).
  • Hilde · 10 months ago
skydive, just DO IT, trust me, something happens up there... a big life change.
  • ellabobella · 10 months ago
I also am considering a tattoo. An &.

Before I even saw my mom's posting, I was thinking, "Maybe we could move from our house..." seems this is a financial and time-consuming burden, especially for my husband. Releasing it may give him breathing room and make him happier.

Embrace the crazy, the desire. I've quit my stable job--smack dab in the middle of a recession--to strike out on my own and take control of my time. I'm also planning to write a book...never mind the dismal publishing climate. I don't care what convention says, and I couldn't be happier.
  • Ellen · 10 months ago
I'm with you, sister. I quit my stable yet hellish job the day before Wachovia failed, but I'm making it - by the skin of my teeth so far, but I am. I'm doing better work with fewer distractions and have been able to get still and contemplate myself for a change.
  • Alison · 10 months ago
I admire you girls like nothing else.
  • fabuleuxparis · 10 months ago
Wow! I admire your bravery. I want to do the same. :)

I think I would like to go somewhere i have never been and do something daring, like jump off a cliff or hike to the top of a peak or camp in the wilderness or swim with the fish.

I don't know how outrageous this is, but for me it is a huge undertaking and something I never thought I'd be able to do. I've signed up for a mini triathlon in April and a sprint triathlon in July. I'm turning 50 in May and my present to myself is to be fit and strong. So far I've lost 35 pounds, 45 to go, and I am in training for my first race. It's exciting and scary all at the same time. And when I've done it, I know it will be an accomplishment I will always be so proud of. It's also something I'm looking forward to continuing as long as my body will let me!
  • shannon · 10 months ago
Have fun with this! As a triathlete and coach I encourage you to enjoy the journey. You will learn so much about your body and what drives you .... and it's a lifestyle with many angles. The first person I worked with lost 100 pounds and went to World's three years in a row as an age grouper... and she started at age 48! Hats off to you...sounds like you are well on your way.

Attend law school at night after working 8+ hours a day. I also want to keep playing in my professional classical ensemble.

I sort of already did my completely outrageous thing for 2009 at the very end of 2008. I bought a 2008 Porsche Cayenne S. I am very financially conservative so this was an absolutely CRAZY purchase in my book until I drove it, discovered what it feels like to drive something with some real horsepower and fell in love with it. Now I want to learn to drive a standard and go on one of those drive a Ferrari experiences this year.

Get engaged. And that IS outrageous for me.
  • Gail Larsen · 10 months ago
Fall so madly in love I embarrass myself!
  • Ellen · 10 months ago
I've never been focused on money, but this year I want to make a Big Pot of it! It's time!
  • Susie Hutchinson · 10 months ago
I want to re-sculpt my body. I've let myself go to such a degree that my body is unrecognizable. Rather than surgery, I'll try Pilate's, Yoga and a diet over hall. Giving up chocolate seems outrageous to me, but I can do it.
  • Mackenzie · 10 months ago
Get my motorcycle license...and I am definitely planning on it!
  • L'Tanya · 10 months ago
I will respect my body and give it what it needs. I signed up to do a 30-day raw vegan program. I've been playing with, reading about, and trying out living and raw foods for a couple of years. This is the first time I've actually told myself, "I can do it." For this NC barbecue-loving gal, this is outrageous. And I can't wait.
  • AA · 10 months ago
I want to work less and have more time for my family. This will mean less money in the household, which scares the heck out of me, but it will also mean a calmer, happier schedule. I'm still on maternity leave and haven't spoken to my boss yet, but by stating my intention here I hope I have the courage to follow through on this desire.

  • Suzyn · 10 months ago
Get a sitter and take salsa lessons with my husband!
  • Teresa · 10 months ago
I've been thinking hard about this....and it came to me on my way to work today.
I am going to FORGIVE MYSELF for having an abortion almost 30 years ago...and learn to love myself!
I think I've beat myself up long enough over this. I think it's time.
AND I'm going to love myself enough to listen to my heart and get out of an empty relationship I've been in for almost 10 years.
    OUTRAGEOUS, eh?
  • LaKecia · 10 months ago
How very brave of you? Good luck on your journey for forgiveness.
  • LaKecia · 10 months ago
Be brave and stop listening to the voices in my head that tell me I can't be a successful person in something other than my present career. I am going to finish my book I started just last night. I am going to claim my rightful place OVER my finances instead of my finances over me. I am going to take my husband on vacation where I want to go. Whew, I feel empowered just writing that.
