Carrie and Danielle: What gives you hope in the world?

  • marn · 10 months ago
When I watched my 5 year old son walk past the 'kettle' for the Salvation Army I felt an abundance of hope. He reached in his pocket, pulled out a dime, and a penny, and put the dime in the kettle and the penny back in his pocket, totally unprompted. Wow. It showed me that he will not only give to others, but he values himself as well. Did I mention he is 5!? Now that gives me hope! :-)

I am an optimist who is almost always hopeful. I believe it is our thoughts that help us see things as possible or impossible. Growing up with a chronically depressed father helped me to make a firm commitment towards hope and joy and possibility. I knew what I didn't want to be, and that was stuck in blame. Believing that I am always at choice gives me hope. Seeing how quickly things change gives me hope. Watching my children grow into responsible human beings who make good choices and are kind gives me hope. The list is actually endless, but I will end here!

My faith that all people are innately good and just haven't realized it yet gives me hope for the future. Eventually we will all become enlightened, a few of us at a time. It's just that when there are billions of us, "a few at a time" doesn't seem like enough sometimes. But it'll happen.

I totally agree. I live my life as 'people have good intention', and 'we are all wounded'. It sure helps my outlook & hope for the human race.

The knowledge that at the most basic level, we all want the same things: to be loved, to be safe, to be happy. Also, my dog's smile. Even though I don't believe in any type of god, the fact that we share the planet with other creatures who can give unconditional love always gives me hope.

yes, yes, yes to all the above and below. might i add, the act of creation/creativity in all its manifestations gives me hope. from understanding the complexity of universe, procreation and birth, to the wondrous balance it takes to create sentient (and non-sentient) beings. ALSO the seemingly frivolous creative acts we humans embark on in our lives. creating a home, a sculpture, a dinner party... i feel hopeful when participating and meditating on these things.

The healing and growth I see in my clients. My beliefs, much like Danielle's. The growth and change I see in myself. An actual adult (Obama) as president-elect...his steadiness and lack of drama give me hope. My Sweetheart, who is kind and good.

My work gives me a front-row seat for the best new stories emerging on the planet, and I am continually inspired by my client's passion and creativity as they learn to speak about their visions. The Obama election has also allowed many of us to exhale!

Yes. I feel it has opened up so much energy to work for what we want, rather than constantly feeling the need to work against.

I just started a new job with The Otesha Project, a not-for-profit organization that mobilizes youth to be the change they want to see in the world. They use cross-country bike tours and theatre to spread their message of Hope. I am deeply inspired by my new coworkers and by the hundreds of volunteers and bike tour members who have become "sustainability advocates" and who inspire their friends, families and communities to do the same.

-The possibilities that come with the election of Barack Obama
-Sites like this one, that give me an opportunity to contemplate something, every day
-That life is cyclic and the world will no doubt evolve into something better - in time
-When I see what people of capable of doing when they come together to help one another in a time of crisis - look what we can do!!

Barak Obama. Not because of what he may or may not do - I don't know if he'll end up being any more effective than the fresh and hopeful Jimmy Carter was. But because a scared and cynical nation was able to put aside fears and doubts and place a bet on a vision, on a mandate for change, on a belief that people can work together in a new way.

As an herbalist, I work to reconnect people with nature and their own earthy body wisdom. When I see this happening, it fuels me. It reminds me that we have not been so out of synch with nature for very long. Then on my daily task of picking up the garbage that blows against our city community garden, I can have compassion for the bits and pieces of ourselves that we throw away, that are forgotten, rather than feel anger or frustration. We are healing, and as we do, we stop harming the earth and ourselves, bit by bit.

Seeing family, my own and my boyfriend's and their unconditional love for one another. Seeing my father battle against alcoholism and win. Seeing my mother with her unwavering sense of humour, optimism and grace.

Hope gives me hope. Seeing other people hold on to hope and keep trying in the face of adversity makes me thing we can all barrel through and make it work.

Seeing Stephanie Nolan's article in the Globe and Mail this weekend, on all the real progress that many countries in Africa have made, despite the stories of miseries and on-going struggles.

Children give me hope in the world. Their unspoiled view of the world and their ability to give unfiltered feedback that is completely honest while still being endearing give me hope.

Every interaction I have with a child gives me hope - I see such wise little people. Acts of creativity give me hope. I'm not talking artistic endeavors (though I do include them), but daily acts of creativity. Creative thinking will be one of the things that change our world!
