Carrie and Danielle: What adventure are you craving (or planning for)?

  • Alison · 1 year ago
I'm crazy about the idea of going to Japan, hopping into a kimono and standing under an oiled paper umbrella in a Hanamachi district. Just thinking about it puts me on Cloud Nine.

The Chicago Olympics in 2016 (if they get it)! It'll practically be in my backyard and it'll probably be the only opportunity I'll ever get to go to the Olympics.

I Dream Of Africa! I've never been there, but it's the trip I crave. I've passed on the desire to my 5yo daughter, so I'm going to take her with me (she wants to visit our sponsor child in Senegal).

Exploring more of the world. I'm embarrassed to say how poorly traveled I am, considering I've lived in Europe for so long. I crave the vibe of Hong Kong, Tokyo and Shanghai; a service trip to Mozambique or Botswana; the spirit of Buenos Aires and Rio; the serenity of a retreat in India or Tibet. We're so lucky to live in a time when travel is not limited to the elite.

In October I will be cycling 4300 km across Eastern Canada and the US to raise money for cancer research. The trip involves a diverse group of people from across Canada working together as a team. We had a training camp to meet some of our team mates this past weekend and it is certainly going to be challenging. Not only are people of varying abilities.....(some just got their bikes, and some are accomplished triathletes and adventure racers), and it's quite apparent that some are better at team work than others. On Sunday's training ride we had a dentist who was all about teamwork, a school pricipal and nurse that was not ...(hmmmm)....there are disciplined varsity athletes and wild and crazy young entrpreneurs....And then there is the weather and the terrain.... yes this will be an adventure for sure! Now if only I could get the fundraising happening in a big way. If anyone here is interested in supporting the cause here's my link: http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrati...

Just booked a week in London England for me and my husband - he has never been there, and I have only been there one day as part of a business trip - just facing the British Pound sterling from this side of the Atlantic is an adventure! We are going to see the opera AIDA at the London Colliseum and hope to poke around the galleries and museums - shopping and eating will also be a new adventure for both!

I would like to live in my own place. I have lived with other people all of my life, parents, siblings, ex-husband, present husband, children and grandchildren.

I can picture how beautiful my place would be - filled with plants, books, flowers. Music playing from my little stereo system. Birds singing outside of my windows, not just the Mourning Doves those early risers but all kinds of song birds throughout the day. The fragrance of Sweet Autumn Clematis wafting in my bedroom window in the middle of the night, its sweet scent intoxicating as summer begins to wane.

Hey - wait a minute - except for not living on my own I already have all of those things! Hmmmm.

I crave one of the small-group adventures with Overseas Adventure Travel (route of the Maya or something fiber-related). And through African Ancestry, it was determined that my ancestry is from the Mende people of Sierra Leone. I'd like to plant my feet on the soil of Africa and be energized with the connection and all that it means.

I'm craving an adventure with my girlfriends Jessi and Jass. They are two of the wildest, creative, laughing spirits in my world and we always have an adventure together, even if it is just walking down the street. Jessi is moving back East from Victoria so I can't wait for a hook-up!

By November I'll be deep into a new apartment in a new city, 2 new writing ventures, and a freelance editing gig. It's been a big week!
  • laurie_matthews · 1 year ago
I agree with Carrie!! Usually I think of adventure as running off to the next exciting locale with good friends or family... and I've been doing a lot of that lately. I'm actually writing from 3000 miles away from home. But fall and winter are going to be times when I recharge and rediscover a quieter more introspective side of life.

I am craving time on a beach with my lover.Time when we are not parents or children, attached to devices that ring and demand our attention. I crave our own Garden of Eden.....sans any snakes!

I am planning a 2 month trip to Africa next year. I want to explore South Afica, Kenya & the Ivory Coast. But most importantly, I want to hike into the jungles & hang out with the Lowland Gorillas for a day or two. And my dream come true would be to have one of them reach out & touch me!
  • Gillian · 1 year ago
I'm ready for that too! I yearn and crave for adventures. I've lived in Kiev, London, Australia, Vancouver, taught in China, worked in Sri Lanka, traveled to Dubai, Costa Rica, Thailand, New Zealand and Europe. I'm ready now though for my heart to go on a bit of an adventure too.

Saving for a tour of Ancient Egypt. Stay at 5 star hotels, be guided by someone who really knows the truth, sail the Nile each night and wake up each morning in a different temple. And having the temple to ourselves for meditation, sacred dance and ceremony. In 2009, anyone want to join me?

Wow. There are so many places to go see and not enough time and money...I have a list and right now at the top are New York and England. But I love going to another place - and seeing how we are all human and that we all are in this journey together. My favourite parts of travelling are the small things - getting to see a place in a local's eyes.

As the rain pours down and the grey fog weighs me down here in the mountains I yearn for a move. We just came from PEI where the skies are open for miles and the sunrise wakes you in the morning...I am feeling smothered and cold in Whistler now and know it's time to plan a new home. Next we will go to a small town called Lavington in the Okanagan that will give us the nature fix and serenity we crave. So I am ready to start working with the architect and starting the adventure of another build. I will use this to get me through another rainy autumn here. www.snickerdoodles.typepad.com

Letting go of my "bachelorette pad" and truly embracing my new life with my husband. After a year of marriage and a year of building a home, my husband and I will be moving into our first home & dream home in St. John, USVI. This required me to let go of my bachelorette pad and my past in Miami, in order to whole heartedly embrace my future. Wish me luck!

BONJOUR MES AMIS!! Hope you had a restful ebevening and that you are ready for a long week-end here in the States. Let's hope we are all safe from the storms!

My dream...adventure...vacance plus: to have Matt Lauer's travel agent for the Today show arrange all the trips he has taken and all the trips he'll take!!! Does it get any more sophisticated than that!? I can't come up with any itinerary that would come even close to these trips!!! lollollollollol

    Bisous!

My next adventure is in December when I turn 40! I've been craving to live more authentically. Between the big birthday, allowing my silver hair to take over, and working out my style statement, I'm feeling very energized as I kiss my 30's goodbye!
  • weezie · 1 year ago
I want to: 1) spend a month in France starting at the beaches of Normandy and ending in the Pyrenees and 2) go to Machu Picchu. These are my two biggest travel goals; a weekend in Santa Fe with my bookclub is just 8 driving hours away and always a doable adventure.
  • weezie · 1 year ago
You Go Girl with the silver hair! It's been such a struggle for me, but I despised the time, cost, & effort required to maintain the dye job. My interview with Carrie and subsequent style statement have helped me come to terms with my decision to go natural. And now 2 of my friends have joined me, saying I was an inspiration to them! What a blessing!

I am just a tad excited to go on a trip to Bali Indonesia next year. My 3 girlfriends and I bid on the trip at an auction and one it for pennies. I hope to bring back a suitcase full of cool wood jewelry and other unique accessories for my online boutique. 24 hours to get there though, eeee gad's!
  • colette · 1 year ago
There is a sense of self that comes only from the experience of "being out on one's own," which I had no idea existed until I was about 35 yrs old. Our family was in the process of moving 1400 miles cross country, and it just so happened that I ended up being in the new town with all the house hold goods and no hubby or kids for 60 days. It was marvelous!
  • Alexa Johnson · 1 year ago
Wow, after seeing all these travel ideas, I feel a little sheepish about admitting my plan for adventure: having children. But, I suspect, unlike some adventures that can end on the flight home, my kids will keep the adventures coming year after year! I think that's the most exciting part of all.

Enjoy all of your upcoming adventures everyone!

a quiet weekend getaway with my husband. we keep meaning to do this but 'life' gets in the way. we have not been away alone in years. i'm craving that deeply.
  • Uncle Beefy · 1 year ago
Right now, I'd love to go somewhere for a little alone time. Probably a little cabin by the beach to reflect, regroup, recharge. And surely some wine, chocolate or cheese is gonna have to enter that picture at some point ;)

The adventure of motherhood. I am now officially preparing (instead of always saying that we'll do it next year).
Very exciting and very scary. Truly a journey.
As for a more conventional adventure - I want to take my husband to go swim with the dolphins for his birthday.

We are planning an adventure to the Big Island of Hawaii in February. I have been there before but I am amazed how each time provides me with a new experience that is thrilling and unique.

I'm craving some Chicago Bears football tickets.

I'm planning to start school Tuesday.

I NEED to travel somewhere REALLY SOON...I haven't been anywhere since July...and you know I AM MS. ROAD TRIP-at least once a month I'm going somewhere!!! I really want to go to ATLANTA, GEORGIA & NEW YORK CITY.

I crave and am planning to go with my school overseas...last year they went to Greece. I can't wait!

AND of course, I am currently counting down the weeks until my favorite holiday / my bday (November 1st). How many weeks? 10. I'm still thinking of the most SPECTACULAR/fantastic birthday party yet...each year has to top the last!!! Last year was a comedy show and dinner....this year who knows. Any suggestions?

Oh, and it doesn't stop there with the CELEBRATING....yesterday in Spanish class, my teacher said that I will celebrate anything....which is a GOOD thing! We should not only focus on our day to day rountine or the negative things in life....CELEBRATE Everything! Celebrate w a 3 course-meal breakfast instead of cold cereal. Celebrate w a massage today because you didn't cuss out your boss. Celebrate 3 days of non-smoking. Celebrate because you woke up this morning! WOOO HOOO!!! If you don't celebrate, I certainly will celebrate FOR YOU!!! LOL

Don't let the Olympics pass you by....I attended the 1996 Atlanta Games, which were COOL! I saw world records broken, a whole day of track & field, the women's gold medal basketball game, and watched gymnasts practicing. DO it!
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
This is my sense exactly. I do have a fair amount of alone time as my husband spends a lot of time away from home. But it's just not the same as actually LIVING alone. Even if for 60 days - or a year! :)
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
Carrie - where is this place? I want to do exactly that too and would love to find a place like that to rent- it needs to be in front of sand dunes, sea grasses and the ocean.. it has a screen door that slams behind me as I head out to a lovely sand beach, where I walk, collecting shells while contemplating one of the most profound books I've ever read.. A Gift From The Sea by Anne Morrow Lindberg.

This is a book I give as a gift to special women in my life at certain times in their lives. I'm really looking forward to the day I know my daughter is really ready for it. So, if you know of this place and it's available to rent for a week or two, please, please share... thanks.

My copy of 'Style Statement' arrived on Wednesday and I've been saving it for tonight! The boyfriend will be at work and I plan on getting comfy, lighting a few candles and curling up with the book, a notebook and a glass of wine or cup of tea. I'm looking forward to the adventure of discovering more about myself and living more authentically.

A trip to somewhere that I've never been......and skydiving!
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
Also one of my dream trips Tara. A friend of mine recently went on a safari and took her daughter along.. just the two of them. They really bonded as women and made fabulous memories. A favourite and funny(and scary) moment was when the chief of a local tribe tried to bargain two goats and a cow for her daughter. She bought a really special camera for the trip and they are outstanding, so make sure you do that in case you never get back there... it's changing so fast. In my mind, I see the Africa of Isaak Dinesen's 'Out of Africa."

In this last adventurous year, I've written my book (Transformational Speaking: If You Want to Change the World, Tell a Better Story), sold my home in Santa Fe and moved to Whidbey Island, WA. Now I have a new part of the world to explore in the Pacific Northwest. Peru also calls to continue my experience and study of Shamanism, and I want to explore Italy with a beloved friend or a new love!

There are a few that I've been thinking of:
    1. family reunion - my "little" cousins are now having babies -- that's how long it's been since I've seen them! And my amazing grandma is turning 90.)
    2. yoga retreat for some indulgent one-on-one time with my body and to take my practice to the next level
    3. silence retreat (!?) My bf's mum just returned from 10 days of no talking, no reading, no eye contact (etc.) I've never done anything like that and am curious to know what would shift inside me if I did that...

Any place where there's no Internet access or cellphone coverage. I spent a week in Ullapool in the north-west of Scotland. Actually about seven miles outside of the town, up an unmade road. The isolation was strange to begin with, but ultimately amazingly relaxing.
  • Benita · 1 year ago
In reference to your #3 adventure, it sounds like your bf's mum just did a 10-day Vipassana Meditation retreat which I did back in February. It was life-transforming and what a ride! I highly recommend it and am so grateful for the bountiful lessons I learned about myself and about life while there. These lessons I have instilled into my daily life and have experienced true blessings and happiness. The web site for more info is: www.dhamma.org

i'd love a week (or 6 months) in a cottage somewhere remote-ish... maybe up north here in canada... where i'd do nothing but devour book after book. also take naps. go for walks. take pictures. meditate. throw in good coffee and kundalini yoga and i'm done.
  • Benita · 1 year ago
I love Carrie's adventure....very much in tune with mine. Cozy, warm, deliciousness in a cabin, by the lake, wrapped in a down comforter, reading an incredible book, cuddling with my beloved, beside a beautiful fire. To our side is chocolate covered strawberries and a two glasses of merlot. Perfect Bliss.

I am living my adventure this year. I took a contract to work in Europe (originally from Calgary) for the next year and am based in The Hague. Finding that although English is widely spoken, without Dutch I'm not included in most everyday things. So I am trying to learn the language, the culture, the new job, how the systems work to go to the other European cities I must visit for work, find a place to live and a community to be involved in and most importantly all while trying to meet new people and make new friends.

I am finding it is one thing to vacation in a city or area for a few weeks and another to try and set up a life.

But so long as we keep getting a few sunny days, I am sure it will be one of the key adventures of my life.
