Carrie and Danielle: What Activity Sets You Free?

  • Mackenzie · 11 months ago
Skydiving - it refreshes (by literally blasting air through your brain!) the mind and brings your soul to the surface! I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone and plan on doing it many more times in the years to come. Even if you're scared, it will be one of the best things you ever do.
  • alligator_kate · 11 months ago
Wow, this is the first spiritual explanation I have ever read for the allure of sky diving, and has me intrigued!

i have taken this "plunge" and am so glad i did it... and i'd do it again even but after i did experience it, i renamed the activity sky falling. you are falling, sometimes free falling and sometimes falling with a chute. you feel gravity like never before. even the speed in which you leave the plane (and even more so seeing someone else leave the plane!). its an intensity i didn't anticipate. and thats why id wanna try it again. to do it KNOWING these very basic aspects of the activity. we are heavily evolved, earth-bound creatures! ;-)

I went skydiving last year in New Zealand and it was the most thrilling experience I have ever had - the closest I have ever been to flying. It set me free in a very profound way. Now any time I doubt myself, i just have to remind myself that I Flew. Out Of A Plane. At 15,000 Feet. Overlooking A Mountain. Good reminder to live without fear.

Swimming in the surf when the water is cool, clean and clear. Where you can stand between waves but rise and float over, or swim under, when the waves come. Immersion sets me free.

Running and ANY activity that kicks out adrenaline while being active outside. LOVE ziplining through rain forest canopies!
  • Terry · 11 months ago
Driving a race car on a road racing circuit. Another world - indescibable to those who haven't experienced it!

Not as exhilarating as skydiving or scuba diving, what frees me is something more internal. I am freed and really in the "zone" when I fully connect with women in my coaching practice. Watching the results when women access their gifts, have more fun, and are empowered, leads to a feeling of exhilaration for both me and my clients.

I also find running and dancing to be freeing! Exercise, movement in general is phenomenal :) And laughing!
  • textimage · 11 months ago
cooking, reading, yoga. but im very aware that these examples tap into an internal sense of freedom. lately, more and more, i have been considering ways that my body can move though space. since moving from nyc, walking has waned from my daily experience, i need to find a new creative way to move. nia? african dance? or just dancing to music at home? stay tuned...

Praying. I am not a part of any particular religion, but I love praying.

I live on the shores of Lake Huron. We have the most gorgeous sand beaches. The water is turquoise and deep blue and you can see to the bottom. You can see minnows and tadpoles at the beginning of the spring. It makes me feel free and at peace to swim in the lake, watch the fish and walk along the shore. I have swam in the lake since I was a baby. It is my place, I am alive and renewed every year.

Bikram yoga and my hip hop dance class - I may not be good at it but boy is it fun!

Dancing -- alone -- my own freeform hodgepodge based on ballet. It's freeing, a form of worship, unleashes physical and mental energy ----- why don't I do this every day???!?!

Although it doesn't sound exciting, I set myself free through reading - particularly when I read fiction. I go inside myself, but I also go inside the minds of other people, and to the places they are.

When I was a child, reading was an escape but now it truly is setting me free.

    Combining Carrie & Jessica idea:

Running to beat matched music does it for me. I've got a special Ipod assigned to running filled only with music to match my usual running steps - and sometimes, when my breath allows it, I sing along, so you're warned...

Reading, writing and sharing poetry. And though I am in the center of the US, I would have to agree with jennywren on swimming in the surf. On the rare occasions I've been to the ocean, I absolutely love being immersed and riding the waves and the intense power of the ocean.

The sharing of poetry I've memorized in just the right moment sets us all free!

Hiking, swimming in the ocean and watching nature always do it for me. They give me a sense of gratitude & being a small part of "the big picture" of life.

    Setting other people free.
Spending time with my Japanese friend, Kumie.
Being near the water, be it lake, river, ocean, mudpuddle or jacuzzi.

A walk way out in low tide at Spanish Banks with my dog. Early on a sunny day, it's like you own the whole city.

I relate to many of the posts here but top of my list is being in the ocean. Diving into deep water - both exhilerating and relaxing. Floating in the sun, almost effortless in really salty seas. I find the whole experience humbling and gratitude-inducing.

Public speaking, driving my car fast on a sunny day with my music playing loud and hot yoga.

Swinging on a playground swingset. The kind that's constructed of huge, thick pipe shoved deep in the earth so I can go as high as possible and still feel grounded. I feel here and out there and grounded and free and perfect.

Movement & being outdoors, but especially swimming, running and cycling (skiing and snowshoeing in winter) are my favourites and most accessible activities. There's something about running and cycling in the rain that is therapeutic and character building. Soaring in any form, in any weather reinforces my creative and physical energy. Trying something new is always high on the priority list..... that includes sky diving and polar bear dipping.

    Dancing and making love!!!

I forgot... Hot Yoga also set me free!!!!
  • Meredith · 11 months ago
Anything with rythm and movement. I love dancing around my room, walking, canoeing, swimming, making love - activities that bring you back in touch with your pulse and the natural, graceful flow of your body.

looking quietly into the eyes of another and seeing their eternal being sets me free...free to love unconditionally, act spontaneously, be joyous, be transcendant...
  • alligator_kate · 11 months ago
Dancemeditation, whirling, being in nature, and if I am completely honest I'd also say the time I was robbed at gunpoint, but unhurt. That took a lot of working through, but in the end I became more free.
  • kw · 6 months ago
I like yours, I can relate to all of them.
    :-\
Also, the gun thing reminded me of being in a car accident, when I felt as if I was bouncing in the clouds and time went really slowly... and I ended up unhurt. The car was totaled and we had to climb out the window, but the time of not knowing what would happen and being completely out of control, I didn't feel fear, I felt free. Perhaps because you KNOW that there's nothing you can possibly do except go with it; it's out of your hands.

Peace, and I hope you're doing well!
    :)

Swimming at the beach; hiking; delivering presentations; great conversations with my husband and girlfriends; dancing to daggy 70's music; post-excercise. Being able to express myself; or be delighted; or in a space that provokes reflection.

Being on stage when you really know your stuff. Not thinking of the lines, or the music, or the blocking, or the placement of the next note your singing....and knowing you're commanding the stage. Everything else drifts away. (Sigh)

Meditating: letting go of everything, feeling at one with the Great Whatever (Universe, God, etc)...

...and riding my bike around the city when I lived in China. Riding a bike here does not do the same thing at ALL. When I sailed down a road, one arm outstretched, feeling the breeze, or maybe singing as i rode, in a place that was on the opposite side of the planet from "home", yet I felt at home there... knowing how to whiz around in a foreign city that I was once afraid of getting lost in... I don't know if I'll ever feel that freedom again. Maybe I'll have to try another country, haha...
