I just became a magazine woman a few years back, but since then I like to dabble in the following...
"O, The Oprah Magazine": I missed an opportunity to write for "O" because I was not prepared... This thought is still a sore spot for me. Nevertheless, I love the book section, and Oprah's monthly column, "What I Know for Sure."
Martha Stewart: Since I fell in love with all things home, Martha has been one of my guides.
The American Scholar: I just read this to feel smart... lol. ha. ha.
The New Yorker (fiction): I love reading fresh, new prose!
I like my trash glossy.
Brain,Child: The magazine for thinking mothers

of course, my husband devours it too. Intelligent thought provoking articles representing the full spectrum of life as a family from conception through empty nest, very limited advertising and an absolute delight to read.

As for magazines that I can't resist at the grocery store line-up, Real Simple tops the list.

But I'm a magazine fanatic so here are a few others of my favorites: Real Simple, Canadian House and Home, Best Health, Prevention, Home Style, Shape, Weight Watchers, Home Country.

Bitch.
Dwell.
Motto (which I fell for just before they went under).
Psychologies.
Elle Decor.
Canadian House & Home.
Anything with beautiful photographs and imagery that speaks to where I am. I am always harvesting for collage work.
I actually still have the majority of my older mags - late 80s-mid 90s. A few years ago when I was unemployed I put a bunch of them on ebay and made quite a pretty penny. Only the mags I wasn't terribly attached to, though...
Thanks!
Fabulous idea Maureen.
Vanity Fair - interesting articles and the only magazine I will carry when I travel
Domino - first subscription I have bought in years
Real Simple - been a ready since the first issue - valuable on many levels
Utne - again, been reading it since the first issue in 1986
Skirt - free monthly found in the Southern part of US
Canadian home magazines - imaginative, inspiring decor
Paris Match - my little bit of gossip
I love Vogue for traveling, when I just want to look at pictures.
My name is Nicole and I am a Magazine Addict.
Fast Company, Inc, Essence, Marie Clarie, O, Fortune, Zinc, Flare.
These mags are my vices.
I feel like I'm the only makeup artist in the world that enjoys makeup magazines but looooves Business Magazines as well.
Chicago Social - (also called CS)
I AM OBESSESSED WITH MAGAZINES!! Always have been. I envy magazine editors. UGH!

The one that rates a subscritpion tho' would be North and South. If anyone is thinking of visiting New Zeaaland that would be the best read to get a feel for the lifestyle and soul of my country.
We are also subsribing to a Brit magazine called Coast in anticipation of our visit to Wales next year. It about living by the sea UK style.
Also love to read Oprah "O", Sunset, Metropolitan Home, Glamour, People, the occasional Cosmo (such a delish indulgence!), InStyle Home, Martha Stewart, Real Simple, Cooking Light...and anything that might catch my eye in the check out line!
I am a big fan of O Magazine because of all the free advice. Next to that is Real Simple. It's very helpful. Cottage Living, Domino and Better Homes and Gardens are on my list, too. My biggest guilty pleasure is People Magazine---I read it every Friday night as a way to escape from the week!
check 'em out: http://www.utne.com/daily.aspx
And now for the "treat". Did you know you can access full-page, "actual" magazines for free, online? This site has over 800 of them, including dozens of current month copies. "Mygazines is your free place to browse, share, archive and customize unlimited magazine articles." Enjoy! www.mygazines.com
i bought my first architectural digest in 1982 when i was 15. then i collected them for the next 15 years or so until i literally started to lose the boxes in every move. i still collect them, and haven't figured out a way to store them and show them off at the same time. i should have gone into architecture, although my second career now is interior design and i fell i finally got to the right place.
today i love magazines like 'modernism', 'dwell', any British or Scandinavian home design magazine (international 'Elle')
maybe if i picked up Vogue one day i could learn how to dress...
Intelligent, thought provoking, inspirational and just a darn good read. my husband loves it too...
My top 5 mags would have to be:
1. Vanity Fair
2. Surfer Mag
3. Monocle (developed by fellow Canadian, Tyler Brule from Wallpaper)
4. Food & Drink (from the LCBO)
5. US Weekly/Hello! (guilty pleasure ;)
A little habit I've gotten into is dropping my magazines off after I'm done with them in the chemo ward at a hospital near my house. Something to keep in mind instead of tossing them in the recycling bin.
The first step is to admit that you are powerless to the pull of the print...
Stoney Creek (counted cross-stitch)
Creating Keepsakes (scrapbooking)
Somerset Studio (full of amazing mixed media ideas and details)
Cloth Paper Scissors (inspiring mixed media ~ always something new to learn about. Really makes me want to play!)
Quilting Arts (love the color combos and design details, even though I don't quilt)
Digital Studio (makes me want to learn Photo Shop)
Artful Blogging (a quarterly magazine full of amazing creative blogs ~ I especially love the illustration and challenge blogs)
La Vie Claire (love the photography and reading about people who achieved their dreams and live creatively)
Where Women Create (eagerly awaiting the premier issue)
Belle Armoire (recently started getting this. I don't have all the issues, but wish I did!)
Haute Handbags (on my "must get" list ~ such amazing, creative details)
Altered Couture (fun to see how people turn old clothing into something new and different}
Somerset Life (interesting details)
Sew Somerset (more mixed media ideas)
Genealogical Helper (always hoping for a lead to break through my brick walls in research)
Taste of Home (Country Woman is also fun)
Digital Scrapbooks (another one that makes me want to play with Photo Shop)
Victoria (gorgeous photography and lots of details. I love Alexandra Stoddard's column)
Sew Beautiful (love the hand-smocked details and gorgeous embroidery)
Some of my favorites are Women's Health, Oxygen, FitRx. These magazines are full of wonderful health and fitness tips, articles workouts and more. Also love In Style and O Magazine.

National Geographic
Arkitip
Marie Claire
Cook's Illustrated
Food & Wine
Sherman's Travel

Game Informer
Oh, jeez - I had no idea there were so many! I better plant a couple of trees this year.
I also regularly buy Vogue and Real Simple (for opposite ends of the pracitcality spectrum!!). I'm thinking of subscribing to Nylon.
Less frequent buys, but always enjoyed: Utne, Wallpaper, Allure, The Believer, Games, British Vogue, Giant Robot, Stop Smiling, anything on photography or digital darkroom techniques, anything on graphic design.
I find old faces really beautiful. The eyes being the windows of the soul. Have you seen in the Shadow of the Moon. The astronauts are all in their 70s and their eyes and faces just glow with exuburance and intelligence. No "work" done there.
Cecile, would you tell me your style statement. I am Bold Grace
Others that I enjoy:
House Beautiful (ever since they got a new editor)
Lucky
Any gardening magazine
Any travel magazine
Thank you for your reply. I think we are fortunate to have witnessed the apex of NASA, and the faces -sans enhancements-that graced the major fashion magazines when we were in our teens... Actually, no I haven't seen In the Shadow of the Moon, but I will search for it. Yes, I did see Aldrin at a book signing, and my eyes got watery...
I need to work on my Style Statement. I know this sounds totally ignorant, but, can you walk me through it? Do I need the workbook/book? I need a mentor!!!! lollollol
I am looking forward to your reply. Cécile
Actually I recalculated my age: won't be 63 until March 21, 1009. So we are a year apart..lol
I amswerd my own question: Yes, I ned to get the book and do the homework. It won't be this week end as my son, and his girlfriend are coming to town, and we are having a Birthday Party for him. But I will shoot for the following week-end.
I will keep you abreast of my progress.

Carries and Danielles book is a must. The book is the map of the whole country. I found it really helpful to group the foundation words into families that are realated to each other. You do this and it only has to make sense to you. One of those groups of words will pop out at you and that when you can be sure you are on the right track
Another thing I found helpful was to get my 10 very favourite things that are mine and put them all together. this can be art work, vases. a photo, a book a shell anything that makes your heart sing.
Draw 9 squares on big piece of paper. and write the 10 things by name in the middle. Around the 8 outside squares write some describing or mood word that capture what those favourite things are all about. That will give you some good clues.
You can do the same with your favourite clothes and jewellery too. The things that make your eyes sparkle to put them on. The words for that can be a helpful reveal too.
Its work and its good work and fun too.
It can also be a great help in getting the clutter out of your life too. The stuff that is not your style statement and does not tell you your story.
I am sure once I get started the biography part will make all the sense in the world, because right now I am not sure what you mean...
Thank you Jennifer for your mentoring!! ;-)

I live in Wellington new Zealand. It is the middle of winter here and the whole country is having the most violent storms
Jen
What's up for your week-end?
Cécile
I also worked over the week end. I am a nurse and work at a hospice.
I live in a house built in the 40's and love the ever present and subtle sense that it is almost the same vintage as me. How did people live in those tiny kitchens. We lived for a whole winter before we altered it to be more in line with how we live today. Open plan with French doors to the sunny outside.
Space to invite people round. NZers are very casual and love easy open living spaces.
A big high has drifted over NZ and the clear blue sky and the sun remind me spring is on its way. I opened the whole house up for half an hour and let the Fresh air drift through The best house perfume of all Fresh air straight off the Tasman sea.
Are you the Cecile that does quite regular postings on Carrie and Danielle or are there 2 of you.
