Carrie and Danielle: What’s your favourite magazine?

  • Ramona · 1 year ago
    My. My. My.

I just became a magazine woman a few years back, but since then I like to dabble in the following...

"O, The Oprah Magazine": I missed an opportunity to write for "O" because I was not prepared... This thought is still a sore spot for me. Nevertheless, I love the book section, and Oprah's monthly column, "What I Know for Sure."

Martha Stewart: Since I fell in love with all things home, Martha has been one of my guides.

The American Scholar: I just read this to feel smart... lol. ha. ha.

The New Yorker (fiction): I love reading fresh, new prose!
  • Colette · 1 year ago
I've been a magazine junkie all my life. Woman's World is my all time favorite, followed by First. I remember when First had it's debut. It was completely different that other "news stand" magazines. I love the recipes and the photos of both magazines and with Women's World, I love all the fun, the humor, the stories and puzzles and the little strip down the side of one page with daily affirmations which always seem to be in perfect timing. "O" magazine is my only subcription. I love every page of every issue - what more can I say?
  • Colette · 1 year ago
Oh, I love Esquire as well. I've raised a house full of boys / men (same thing) and truly appreciate the humor, the questions posed, etc. and of course, the fashion. (I agree with you Danielle that it is the guy version of Marie Claire.) My husband is an engineer. That equals 100% geek / nerd and 0% fahsion sense, so I make sure he and I sit down and look at what men wear when they are not drinking beer while watching "Monday night football" from their lazy boy after spending 10 hours at work in front of a computer screen.
  • Shannon · 1 year ago
I am also mildly obsessed with magazines. Most months, I read O, In Style, Elle (which I think has a similar fashion/ interesting journalism balance to Marie Claire's), Vanity Fair, Vogue and Domino. I think my favorite magazine of all is Real Simple. Their lovely, harmonious aesthetic is one I am striving for in my own life (it goes very well with my Style Statement of Comfortable Sophistication), and they make it seem completely within reach.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
I no longer subscribe to any magazines though when I did my favourite was Canadian Gardening. It's still my favourite. I buy Hello, sometimes O (though I seldom finish it), Homemaker, other gardening magazines and I'm embarrassed to say People!

    I like my trash glossy.
  • Joanne · 1 year ago
I subscribe to Vogue and Vanity fair - pure escapism. My husband gets SFX, a magazine about science fiction tv, film and books, and Empire, a film magazine, and I enjoy reading both of them.
  • Traci · 1 year ago
The New Yorker, Marie Claire, Easy Living, Lucky, Domino, Paste. Once in a while I'll jump out of the box and get something totally different like Preen, The Believer, or Uncut.
  • Traci · 1 year ago
Oooh! And Cottage Living. Love that mag.
  • Ramona · 1 year ago
    I, too, like Real Simple!!
  • Xai Vicente Charles · 1 year ago
I love Real Simple, Domino and Dwell. I'm also addicted to any big glossy European design and fashion magazines.
  • Mag Junkie · 1 year ago
I'm a magazine fiend! I love Utne and have been a subscriber for YEARS, but I also subscribe to Mother Jones, BUST (for women with something to get off their chests) Ready Made, Real Simple, Yoga Journal and WIRED for the techie stuff. I pick up InStyle almost every month but I may switch to Marie Claire after reading some of these posts!
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
Domino, Metropolitan Home, Elle Decor, Gourmet, Bon Appetit
  • marn · 1 year ago
Real Simple, O Magazine, Canadian parenting, Canadian Gardening, and House & Home... (I also indulge in People or any 'who's who' mag when getting a new hair do)!
  • textimage · 1 year ago
my dirty little secret is "departures" magazine. its the amex platinum card holder magazine that i get ONLY because they are courting my clients as advertisers. its a real swank rag that shows the world's best... everything. i don't live lusting after much, but this magazine pushes those desire buttons. more than "dwell" even!
  • Amy Guth · 1 year ago
    Real Simple!
  • stella tinglin · 1 year ago
    Vanity Fair
  • sarah juliusson · 1 year ago
    No question here:
Brain,Child: The magazine for thinking mothers
    http://www.brainchildmag.com/

of course, my husband devours it too. Intelligent thought provoking articles representing the full spectrum of life as a family from conception through empty nest, very limited advertising and an absolute delight to read.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
That's tough one!!! I am a bibliophile and pile the table with reading stuff... Paris Match, O, More, Bazaar, French and USA Vogue... Marie Claire and French Elle... Yoga Journal, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Ma Maison... I don't have a favorite mag. I love them all!!! But if I have to pick one I will keep O for the many diferent deoartments and issues it addresses.

  • Cecile · 1 year ago
Oh, of course right there withj O VANITY FAIR!!!! I just live that rag.... Cécile

Real Simple. Style at Home. In Style. Marie Claire. Parents.
  • Maureen · 1 year ago
Never met a magazine I didn't like! The New Yorker is my passion . . . also love Oprah's O, Harper's, Real Simple, etc. Family Fun, when it first came on the scene, was wonderful--and still is pretty great--all about how to have fun with your kids! I adore American Girl, because it encourages pre-teens how to revel in their girlhood--and More, because it helps me enjoy my umm maturity. Here's the magazine I wish I could publish: something aimed at the Parents of Teenagers. Those people need support, and the feeling of "I can do it!" that a good lifestyle mag can give you.
  • textimage · 1 year ago
    bibliophile AND francophile too ;-)
  • darcey · 1 year ago
Saveur! I've been subscribing to it since it's first issue in 1995. I'm a foodie and a traveller and each month Saveur takes me on a food trip to someplace wonderful. On a recent vacation to Prague it was an old issue of Saveur that led me through the city more than my Frommer's.
  • carla morales · 1 year ago
I really enjoy Vanity Fair..great articles on politics and BC Business is fantastic.
  • Tammy · 1 year ago
I subscribe to a bunch of design mags because I'm a designer, but honestly, the only one I make sure to pick up and read cover to cover every month is Domino. I really like that magazine, especially because they give you the sources for the products they show. My other long-time subscription favorite is: Popular Science! It is way cool. I started getting this because I am a futurist and a wanna-be scientist, and I thought what better way to keep up with new and future technology as I'm writing my fantastic science fiction epic?! <--My big, audacious dream, by the way.
  • MelissaM · 1 year ago
I adore and collect literary mags and my very favourite is The New Quarterly... www.tnq.ca

As for magazines that I can't resist at the grocery store line-up, Real Simple tops the list.
  • Amy · 1 year ago
I also love Utne. It's an awesome collection of stories from all over the world. Another one for positive thinkers is Ode (for intelligent optimists). For all of the negative news that we hear everyday, this is a nice counterpoint. Then there is Real Simple and Ready Made, for great design ideas for maximum function.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
I am just browsing through the answers, and I am so very relating to all the answers... I used to go to the library and check out as many Bazaars, VOgues as they would let me... at sixteen!!! How I loved them... I so linged to look like "the Shrimp"... and Whilhelmina... she was gorgeous I thought!!!! Time flies...

More Magazine. It is a women magazine focusing on 40 plus women. It has style/fashion, health/fitness, food/decor wrapped up in one splendid magazine plus topics related to this age group!
But I'm a magazine fanatic so here are a few others of my favorites: Real Simple, Canadian House and Home, Best Health, Prevention, Home Style, Shape, Weight Watchers, Home Country.
  • Cindy · 1 year ago
O Magazine, Lucky, Domino, Real Simple, Script, Creative Screenwriting, and Writer's Digest + any other magazine that catches my eye. I usually stop into Barnes and Nobles at least once a month and pick up a ton of magazines to look through.
  • Cathy Miller Beerrs · 1 year ago
So excited that you're featuring a question on magazines. I have LOVED magazines ever since I was a little Girl. My mother used to read True Story and it was so provacative at the time that we were never allowed to read the stories! Ha! Imagine by today's standards. Loved magazines so much they ended up being my career when I started at an ad agency earlier in life and now I still work with magazines. Loved the career. Always will. In a day and time when technology takes over, nothing is better than 45 minutes with a favorite read!
  • Erin · 1 year ago
I am a huge, huge Domino fan. I agree with you, Carrie and Danielle, that magazines are my ultimate "soul food," escapism, and relaxation. I almost have a problem because I have a hard time parting with them. But back to my #1, Domino - this is the only magazine that I ALWAYS read cover to cover and never, ever have gotten rid of one issue. Whenever I'm starting a new project I get them out on my office floor and pore through them. (Other subscriptions are Time, Vogue, Lucky, InStyle. At times, I have subscribed to 13 magazines at once!)
  • lisaohhh · 1 year ago
I love O, Body+Soul and Ode. Sage Woman is great too. I love magazines that offer content that raises consciousness, body mind or spirit, individually, socially or globally. Okay, I'll come clean, when I'm feeling like snacking on literary junk food, I read Glamour or People.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
Ahhh mon cherie... Bof! I just like their formats... I used to get France, too... I went to Paris for my 60th birthday courtesy of my sister in law, my brother and my Mom and kids... And I just fell in love... I thought I loved Switzerland. Well, I can sit atLe Deux Magots and watch people all day!!!

Right now I hunt high and low to find Cookie Magazine every month. It's a combo of Dwell, Vogue but for families. Amazing design, fashion and good articles on kiddos and life with them. I also am a fan of Real Simple, Wondertime, O, Dwell, Domino. There are also a few Canadian mags I love now, Wish, Chocolat, Canadian Family, House And Home and Style at Home and gosh darn it even Chatelaine are making huge layout and design changes and I like them more and more each year. I am also forever grateful for House & Home and Wish for doing small business pieces on me in the past, I still get orders from folks who saw me in mags even though it was years back. Thank goodness for all those Dr and Dentist offices who never have current magazines to peruse!

I read them all, about 16 a month, since as a writer magazines are deductions (yay!!) and I use that to its full benefit. When I was a teen I remember waiting for the September Seventeen so I could start plotting what to wear the first day of school. I'd have to say I love National Geographic -- the photos never fail to awe me -- and my current fave is Body + Soul.
  • Tamara ModernGear TV · 1 year ago
It's a three-way tie between Dwell for breathtaking homes and furnishings, Fast Company for the business/new media inspiration, and Wish, for home, fashion, food, and more. I miss Wish now that I am in the US, but when I move back in March it's the first subscription I'll start up again.
  • Dena · 1 year ago
Vogue, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, More, Vanity Fair, sometimes the New Yorker, various decorating and gardening magazines.
  • Kim · 1 year ago
Cottage Living! Isn't it fabulous? I love the idea of a smaller house with charm and character versus the huge soulless mausoleums that seem to be popping up in my neighborhood (much to my dismay).
  • Kim · 1 year ago
Domino is such a breath of fresh air. I LOVE that magazine!
  • Carolynn · 1 year ago
Definitely STYLE AT HOME. I love that their product references, stores, and pricing are Canadian. I also like their High/Low section and that they're beginning to focus on decorating smaller, cozier homes. Lots of great ideas and beautiful images. I've been using my copious back issues as reference books while I've been redecorating my condo.
  • Danette · 1 year ago
    Bust.
    Bitch.
    Dwell.
Motto (which I fell for just before they went under).
    Psychologies.
    Elle Decor.
    Canadian House & Home.
Anything with beautiful photographs and imagery that speaks to where I am. I am always harvesting for collage work.
  • Connie · 1 year ago
Fashion mags especially the Fall and Spring bonanza issues of Vogue and W. I like international fashion mags too. I think Vanity Fair is a good blend of info and style.
  • Lyda · 1 year ago
Walrus is a great Canadian magazine that has well written articles on a wide variety of topics. Currently am reading the local wedding mags as my daughter is planning her wedding - it's so much fun perusing them with her.
  • Nia · 1 year ago
I love Yoga Journal, Spirituality & Health, Utne, Wax Poetics, Fader, Trace (especially the BLACK GIRLS ROCK issue), Essence, Poets & Writers, Ms., Ready Made and virtually ANY cooking magazine...especially the imports (Donna Hay). I am starting to get into the interior design ones so right now Domino and Blueprint stand out too.
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
I'm a sucker for the stickers they supply in each issue that allows me to tag my favorites!
  • Nancy · 1 year ago
I have a few favorites that I love to have around the house, Inc. MS, More, Bitch, Natural Health & Positive Thinking. They are each amazing magazines!
  • Cathy · 1 year ago
Total magazine junkie here and have been for as long as I can remember. I have gone through many phases in my life. I used to love US Elle when it first came out, but stopped reading it in the early 90s. At that time I was also reading Cosmo, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. Bazaar hasn't been the same since Liz Tilberis passed away. I'm a beauty junkie so I was really into Allure for a while there as well and InStyle. I have had subscriptions to most of these at different times, but not at the moment. I've read Vanity Fair for years (I love Dominick Dunne's articles as well as most of the others). I have also had subscriptions to Domino, Lucky, Mode (finally a mag for us larger girls, unfortunately it didn't last!), The Economist (what a fabulous magazine, unfortunately I didn't have time to read it). Currently I subscribe to People, Us, VF, Entertainment Weekly and British Hello. I'll occasionally pick up a British OK at the newsstand, but only if there's something really good (read trashy) like something about Jordan or a big UK wedding that I'd like to see (Wayne and Coleen anyone?). When I lived in France I read Gala weekly as well. French Elle as well.

I actually still have the majority of my older mags - late 80s-mid 90s. A few years ago when I was unemployed I put a bunch of them on ebay and made quite a pretty penny. Only the mags I wasn't terribly attached to, though...
  • Christa · 1 year ago
This is hard for me as I'm usually sold by who's on the cover. If she's a petite, then I pick it up, since it's my job to report on Petite Fashion! I usually gravitate toward Glamour & Marie Claire.

    Thanks!
  • Carrie McCarthy · 1 year ago
A couple mags I'm going to check out! Thanks Colette!
  • JoeM · 1 year ago
Popular Science. Where else can you find out how to "Make a Desktop Universe" or what the real 'Iron Man' suit [that works] actually looks like. Month to month cutting edge developments in everything from medicine to nuclear physics. The PS Magazine works better than a library of books for thinking ahead.
  • Carrie McCarthy · 1 year ago
Canadian Gardening inspires me to create a garden, the photos are lovely.
  • Anna · 1 year ago
Without a doubt, that would be More magazine. That is the only magazine I read cover to cover. I recently found a magazine I really liked called Dwell, but can't find it in the stores anymore.
  • Carrie McCarthy · 1 year ago
I just spent a week with all my preteen & teen nieces and a magazine for their parents would be a great guide and gift.
    Fabulous idea Maureen.
  • Lift · 1 year ago
La Vie Claire - beautiful images and good content
Vanity Fair - interesting articles and the only magazine I will carry when I travel
Domino - first subscription I have bought in years
Real Simple - been a ready since the first issue - valuable on many levels
Utne - again, been reading it since the first issue in 1986
Skirt - free monthly found in the Southern part of US
Canadian home magazines - imaginative, inspiring decor
Paris Match - my little bit of gossip
  • alligator_kate · 1 year ago
The New Yorker. I thought it was too snobby and bitter for years, but so many of the articles are pretty brilliant. Yoga plus Joyful Living is one I am just getting into. I like Yoga Journal too. Spirituality and Health, and I love Shambala Sun even though I am not Buddhist. I wish I could find a comparative religion/spirituality mag with as well-written and in-depth articles. Oh! And the Atlantic Monthly, and of course Sage Woman.
I love Vogue for traveling, when I just want to look at pictures.

Fast Company, Inc, Essence, Marie Clarie, O, Fortune, Zinc, Flare.

Blueprint is my favourite magazine. As a more accessible version of Martha Stewart for the 20-30something crowd, it had great style and fashion, and even d.i.y projects. Luckily I bought all the issues before they got cancelled and I still refer to them for inspiration and colour palette ideas. I substitued my Blueprint subscription with the mama Martha magazine. Also very beautiful and wonderful, just feels a bit less attainable in my present. My friend recently gave me her collection of Natural Home magazine which I became obsessed with for all its examples of beautiful green homes across North America! So awesome to see what people have created! I try not to let the design layout bother me too much ;). My love affair with fashion magazines goes WAY back to being a little girl at the hairdresser. My sister and I would turn the pages and race to be the first to claim the pretty model as "ME!" Oh dear... I've since learned to take fashion mags with a grain of salt, reading them with my feet still on the ground
  • Keiko · 1 year ago
Oh! I forgot to mention Granville Mag -- a local one that highlights green issues, products, peole etc in our very own city! I like the look of it too.
  • Kim · 1 year ago
I love magazines! Just ask my husband, he would call it an obsession I'm sure - I have piles of them. They feed my dreams, entice the senses, and provide so many ideas!!! My favs are: Domino, House Beautiful, Veranda, Western Interiors, Elle, Vogue, In Style, Oxygen (Fitness), and Inc.
  • Misty · 1 year ago
I live in Oklahoma so this is a bit out of my region but I LOVE Sunset! If I were a magazine, I would be Sunset. I'm a magazine junkie... Relevant, Elle, Real Simple, O, Entertainment Weekly, Cottage Living, and Southern Living. I also really enjoy my husband's Esquire.
  • Becciebeth · 1 year ago
I love so many mags, but come budget time I am usually sat down for the, "You need to cut back on some of these." speech. I love Brain Child. I will never give that one up. Cookie is awesome, and Wondertimes has just beatiful stories that remind me of my imaginary chilhood. I can't wait to check out some these other ones though.
  • Barbara · 1 year ago
I love magazines, Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, Ceramics Technical (you guessed it, I'm a potter!). But I also like Home Companion published by Mary Engelbreit. My favorite part of the magazine is the artists' homes feature. I love to see the working environment of other artists. It is a source of great inspiration and fabulous eye candy.

O, Real Simple, Elle, Glamour, Self, Vibe (sometimes), Rachel Ray's mag...

I AM OBESSESSED WITH MAGAZINES!! Always have been. I envy magazine editors. UGH!
  • Kerry L. · 1 year ago
Current Fave is "Everyday with Rachael Ray". I can't possibly make the recipes in 30 minutes or less but I appreciate the help in "what's for dinner tonight." Also Real Simple, In Style, More.
  • Colleen Overman · 1 year ago
I love "O" Magazine as well, always something inspiring, something to think about. I love In Style and Lucky Magazine for fashion and style. I also admit to flipping though People and US Magazine (mostly for the fashion) in the grocery line too! I confess to occasionally buying them as well. Usually when I am buying chocolate and/or ice cream and indulging myself. :)

As a New Zealander I will have to speak in dialect for this one! I love magazines but would mostly flick through lots on home, fashion, food, gardens, health and beauty. If I see an interesting article then I buy. I learnt about style statement this way (YAY!)

The one that rates a subscritpion tho' would be North and South. If anyone is thinking of visiting New Zeaaland that would be the best read to get a feel for the lifestyle and soul of my country.

We are also subsribing to a Brit magazine called Coast in anticipation of our visit to Wales next year. It about living by the sea UK style.

I loooooove me some magazines! I have subscriptions to Fast Company, Inc., InStyle, and Lucky. Need to renew subscriptions to Print and How (I'm a graphic designer).

Also love to read Oprah "O", Sunset, Metropolitan Home, Glamour, People, the occasional Cosmo (such a delish indulgence!), InStyle Home, Martha Stewart, Real Simple, Cooking Light...and anything that might catch my eye in the check out line!
  • Julia · 1 year ago
Oh--"soul snack" is the best expression I've heard in a long time! That's exactly what they are. Magazines help me to relax because they're visually pleasing and not as big a commitment as a book(hee, hee).

I am a big fan of O Magazine because of all the free advice. Next to that is Real Simple. It's very helpful. Cottage Living, Domino and Better Homes and Gardens are on my list, too. My biggest guilty pleasure is People Magazine---I read it every Friday night as a way to escape from the week!
  • Christine · 1 year ago
I actually don't have a favorite, but I prefer online "magazines" because they are paperless.

  • Julia · 1 year ago
Cottage Living is great...I live in a bungalow built in 1925...that magazine is very helpful when trying to determine scale of furnishings! Also, Country Living is great, too. I don't feel so bad for collecting "junk"!
  • lady · 1 year ago
I LOVE magazines. I was once asked in an interview "what magazines do you read?" ...I got the job and with a generous magazine purchasing budget. I'm in product development so it helps. I have collected about 5 years worth of Real Simple, 10 years worth of Martha Stewart Living and Weddings and more recently I have been collecting Domino and I have every "small spaces issue" Canadian House and Home has ever published. My own small space is overrun with magazines so I may have to edit. I love Australian Vogue Entertaining and Travel. Now that I also work with clothing designers, I pay closer attention to the fashion mags. I love RED out of the UK and anything that keeps me updated in the fashion world.
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
Carrie and I met with the Editor of Domino. We asked her why she thinks the magazine works so well. She said, "we just write about what we like...its really all about us." Which is how it should be. You should be your own audience.

Wow! I can't believe how many magazines there are! Stay tuned for a special "treat" all of you fellow bibliophiles and Zine-addicts! (See end of this post.) A few I don't remember seeing here aer Taste of Home, Reminisce, Backyard Living, etc., by Reiman Publications (www.reimanpublications.com). Beautiful pictures, great recipes (from the food ones), a wonderful way to find out about others with similar interests, etc.

And now for the "treat". Did you know you can access full-page, "actual" magazines for free, online? This site has over 800 of them, including dozens of current month copies. "Mygazines is your free place to browse, share, archive and customize unlimited magazine articles." Enjoy! www.mygazines.com

i loved carrie's answer - the choice of adult mag at age 14 really tells a lot about ones aspirations (or should-be aspirations - parent's take note!)

i bought my first architectural digest in 1982 when i was 15. then i collected them for the next 15 years or so until i literally started to lose the boxes in every move. i still collect them, and haven't figured out a way to store them and show them off at the same time. i should have gone into architecture, although my second career now is interior design and i fell i finally got to the right place.
today i love magazines like 'modernism', 'dwell', any British or Scandinavian home design magazine (international 'Elle')
maybe if i picked up Vogue one day i could learn how to dress...

  • Ottoline · 1 year ago
I've been reading magazines since I was 10 yo, including Vogue, Town & Country, Harper Bazaar. My favorite right now is Allure (have the very first issues when they were oversized and continue to refer back to them!) but I am also very fond of British Vogue, Cook's Illustrated and the Elle spin offs of Elle Decor and Elle Accessories. Guilty pleasures are Real Simple, People, Us, etc. I also subscribe to a few academic journals which I won't list here, but mainly relating to victorian studies.

This question comes on the first day of a 2-day magazine editing workshop I'm taking. What timing!I like The New Yorker. I get Style at Home because I like the ideas. Once in a while I buy Vanity Fair, if there's a good article. I used to like Rolling Stone, but it's changed. I also used to read Mother Jones.

My favorite magazine is my own! Families of Loved Ones Magazine (FOLO) came into being after over 20 years as a family caregiver. Now begining my fifth year I've found the project to be facinating as well as challenging. Truthfully, I am a huge fan of many magazines. In particular I love it when a magazine treats the reader with respect and gives non biased views on the information presented. I dislike magazines that cater soley to "upper income level readers".
  • Tara · 1 year ago
Vogue Australia (where I foung Carrie & Danielle), Vogue Paris and Paris Match when I can find them on the run.
  • Gillian · 1 year ago
Growing up in a family where both parents were visual artists, I tend to squirrel away many of my magazines as sources of inspiration. My father had a monthly subscription to American Cinematographer and National Geographic when I was younger. He has kept most of them and they are amazing to peruse through now.
My top 5 mags would have to be:
    1. Vanity Fair
    2. Surfer Mag
    3. Monocle (developed by fellow Canadian, Tyler Brule from Wallpaper)
    4. Food & Drink (from the LCBO)
    5. US Weekly/Hello! (guilty pleasure ;)

A little habit I've gotten into is dropping my magazines off after I'm done with them in the chemo ward at a hospital near my house. Something to keep in mind instead of tossing them in the recycling bin.

my first magazine was a vogue. my dad brought it home for me; don't know how he got it. i've been a magazine girl ever since. i love domino, dwell, marie claire esp., lucky, and parabola - which is a journal about myth and literature. really, tho, i pretty much read 'em all.

La Vie Claire!!!!! I am salivating... where do you find it?
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
I am 63. Jean Shrimpton is now in her 70's I suppose. W has been dead for years...;-( But The Shrimp married and opened a hostal in merry olde England!!! and does not look at all like she used to. I prefer to remember her the way she was, but on the other hand this opennesss humanizes her. I think that those were the faces that were real. I want to think that in the sixties, before all this palstic surgery models were the real thing like Hutton, and Graham... I seldom look twice at Moss or any of the others because I know they are all on drugs and that makes me lose the awe...Do you know what I mean?

ODE magazine is way beyond amazing. It's filled with positive, inspiring, empowering articles on people taking action to make the world a better place. It's SO GOOD and so interesting.

    Domino
    Bazaar
    Wired
    National Geographic
    Arkitip
    Marie Claire

I also regularly buy Vogue and Real Simple (for opposite ends of the pracitcality spectrum!!). I'm thinking of subscribing to Nylon.

Less frequent buys, but always enjoyed: Utne, Wallpaper, Allure, The Believer, Games, British Vogue, Giant Robot, Stop Smiling, anything on photography or digital darkroom techniques, anything on graphic design.

Oh, forgot to mention two more real favorites - Cutie and Kera - both are Japanese teen fashion magazines. Fantastic for their displays of creativity and non-conformity in dress. Totally different from American teenagers. I send them to my 16 year old sister for inspiration (she wants to be a stylist). I get loads of inspiration for myself from them, too.

I am 61. I so agree with you about Lauren H. She is lucky with her facial bones. It gives those wrinkles something glorious to hang off.The gap in her teeth is way cute too.

I find old faces really beautiful. The eyes being the windows of the soul. Have you seen in the Shadow of the Moon. The astronauts are all in their 70s and their eyes and faces just glow with exuburance and intelligence. No "work" done there.

Cecile, would you tell me your style statement. I am Bold Grace

Ooh! So glad you mentioned these...have been into Red for years now (love it) and am getting into Psychologies - I enjoy the responsibility-based approach to self-help. I was into the UK Marie Claire for years as well, but haven't been finding it as good a read in the past year or so. Haven't read Eve in ages - need to pick it up again.

More, Canadian Living, Canadian Parents, Canadian House and Home, and The New Scientist. Real Simple would work better if there were a Canadian version, as so many things mentioned in it aren't available here. There used to be a great magaazine that profiled strong , interesting women who accomplished things - I wish I could remember the name of it. I think it went under because they were very particular about advertizing, and wanted to avoid all those cosmetic ads that made women feel they needed to be "better" by buying a product. Wouldn't it be great if there were something out there for our tender young girls?

Domino (agreeing with all of the fans here) and InStyle are my indispensables!

    Others that I enjoy:
House Beautiful (ever since they got a new editor)
    Lucky
    Any gardening magazine
    Any travel magazine

    Hi, Jennifer,

Thank you for your reply. I think we are fortunate to have witnessed the apex of NASA, and the faces -sans enhancements-that graced the major fashion magazines when we were in our teens... Actually, no I haven't seen In the Shadow of the Moon, but I will search for it. Yes, I did see Aldrin at a book signing, and my eyes got watery...
I need to work on my Style Statement. I know this sounds totally ignorant, but, can you walk me through it? Do I need the workbook/book? I need a mentor!!!! lollollol

I am looking forward to your reply. Cécile

    Jennifer,

Actually I recalculated my age: won't be 63 until March 21, 1009. So we are a year apart..lol

I amswerd my own question: Yes, I ned to get the book and do the homework. It won't be this week end as my son, and his girlfriend are coming to town, and we are having a Birthday Party for him. But I will shoot for the following week-end.
I will keep you abreast of my progress.

I enjoy ODE (for intelligent optimists) and selvedge. Actually, there are not many magazines I don't like -- well, maybe sports and car magazines.

You are so lucky doing your style statement with a decent biography to work with. Give yourself plenty of time and play with it all
Carries and Danielles book is a must. The book is the map of the whole country. I found it really helpful to group the foundation words into families that are realated to each other. You do this and it only has to make sense to you. One of those groups of words will pop out at you and that when you can be sure you are on the right track
Another thing I found helpful was to get my 10 very favourite things that are mine and put them all together. this can be art work, vases. a photo, a book a shell anything that makes your heart sing.
Draw 9 squares on big piece of paper. and write the 10 things by name in the middle. Around the 8 outside squares write some describing or mood word that capture what those favourite things are all about. That will give you some good clues.
You can do the same with your favourite clothes and jewellery too. The things that make your eyes sparkle to put them on. The words for that can be a helpful reveal too.
Its work and its good work and fun too.
It can also be a great help in getting the clutter out of your life too. The stuff that is not your style statement and does not tell you your story.

Thank you for your reply! I am so exscited now.. I picked out the book from the shelf over a month ago. It almost jumped at me.. but I put it back, because I thought it kind of complicated... But Borders in Coral Gables has it, so I will pick it up tonigjt...

I am sure once I get started the biography part will make all the sense in the world, because right now I am not sure what you mean...

Thank you Jennifer for your mentoring!! ;-)

What a lovely name. I am going to Google Coral Gables and find out where in the world that is
I live in Wellington new Zealand. It is the middle of winter here and the whole country is having the most violent storms
    Jen
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
Oh Dear!! I am awfully sorry! We used to jave bad storms like that when I lived in the New York area. Coral Gables is a rsidential area within the Miami Metro Atea. It's old, by that I mean houses built in the 40'sd and fifties, but there are many newer beautiful homes. I live in Bay Harbor Island North of the Gables. My daughter lives in the Gables. I am staying with her, because the Nanny was let go, and I help with my granddaughter, and she is helping me save on gasoline.. I live 20 miles each way from work which happens to be in the commercial area of the Gables. I work for the County as a computer programmer and systems analyst.

    What's up for your week-end?

I have been busy getting ready for a talk I am facilitating on healing. all of life is about healing.
I also worked over the week end. I am a nurse and work at a hospice.
I live in a house built in the 40's and love the ever present and subtle sense that it is almost the same vintage as me. How did people live in those tiny kitchens. We lived for a whole winter before we altered it to be more in line with how we live today. Open plan with French doors to the sunny outside.
Space to invite people round. NZers are very casual and love easy open living spaces.
A big high has drifted over NZ and the clear blue sky and the sun remind me spring is on its way. I opened the whole house up for half an hour and let the Fresh air drift through The best house perfume of all Fresh air straight off the Tasman sea.
Are you the Cecile that does quite regular postings on Carrie and Danielle or are there 2 of you.
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
Jennifer!!! How nice to hear from you!! No, I think I am the only Cécile on C & D... At least I haven't seen anyone else... The weather sounds so womderful... and your French doors do too. I wondered where had you been? Talk to me about healing... I am quite interested... But this is off-topic, and I do not know if this is against the group's protocol... Anybody?
