Carrie and Danielle: What’s your favourite inspirational quote?

  • alligator_kate · 1 year ago
"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open."--- Martha Graham

(long, but always so valuable to me--- there are other ones--- hard to choose, but this one gets me moving!)

My favourite inspiration quote is not by someone famous, but a quote that has been passed down through our family from my great-grandmother. "All cats are grey in the dark" reminds me that we are all equals. I often jokingly use this quote but is also has a serious side.

What great quotes you're all sharing, and what a wonderful way to start the day in sunny Boonville, North Carolina! Throughout the last few years I've gathered several inspirational quotes, but one of my most favorite ones is this:

"The sun shines not on us but in us. The rivers flow not past, but through us, thrilling, tingling, vibrating every fiber and cell of the substance of our bodies, making them glide and sing." -- John Muir

One of my best friends wrote this to me in an email last week, and it quickly became a quoatable favourite:

"A created life is much greater than one you endure, which is how most of us go through most of life" -Jean Becker

    I also love this one:

“We ask ourselves who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you NOT to be?? You are a child of God. Your playing small does NOT serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the Glory of God that is within us, ALL of us. And as we let our Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fears, our Presence automatically liberates others.” -Nelson Mandela 1994

I love love love that quote.

There is a poem in Marianne Williamson's A RETURN TO LOVE, the one that begins "Our deepest fear..." and its basically how we are not afraid that we aren't brilliant or great, its that we know inherently that we are and that when we shine, we allow others to do the same. That and Gandhi's "Be the change you wish to see in the world" and Nikki Giovanni's (my email signature) - "We love because its the only true adventure".

Hey Alligator...I just completed a writing workshop where Richard Bausch was a guest speaker. He recited his Ten Commandments which I believe originally appeared in a magazine article. I think he's got a book out there about the writing life as well. I'd pick it up; this guy's prolific and well-respected. (I've copied and pasted the full list below for you).

    Best,
    Kirsty

    1. Read: "You must try to know everything that has ever been written that is worth remembering, and you must keep up with what your contemporaries are doing."

    2. Imitate: "While you are doing this reading, you spend time trying to sound like the various authors -- just as a painter, learning to paint, sets up his easel in the museum and copies the work of the masters."

    3. "Be regular and ordinary in your habits, like a Petit Bourgeois, so you may be violent and original in your work." -- borrowed from Flaubert

    4. Train yourself to be able to work anywhere.

    5. Be Patient. "You will write many more failures than successes. Say to yourself, I accept failure as the condition of this life, this work. I freely accept it as my destiny. Then go on and do the work. You never ask yourself anything beyond Did I work today?"

    6. Be Willing. "Accepting failure as a part of your destiny, learn to be willing to fail, to take the chances that often lead to faulire, in the hope that one of them might lead to something good."

    7. Eschew politics. "You are in the business of portraying the personal life, the personal cost of events, so even if history is part of your story, it should only serve as a backdrop."

    8. Do not think, dream.

    9. Don't compare yourself to anyone, and learn to keep from building expectations.

    10. Be wary of all general advice.

This is mine as well. I bought me a gold band with ten small, but flawless and near colorless diamonds. I wear it on the ring finger of my right hand. I made a promise to my self of being "above all else, to my own self be true." I also think of "to Be or not to Be," when I see my ring, or the reflecting light from it, and use it to remind myself to be in the moment, be in the now and to just let things be.

I love this quote by Mother Theresa (it is kind of long, but worth it), it is called "Do It Anyway":

People are unreasonable, illogical, and self centered - love them anyway,
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives - do good anyway,
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies - succeed anyway,
The good you do will be forgotten tomorrow - do good anyway,
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable - be honest anyway,
What you spent years building may be destroyed overnight - build anyway,
People that really need help may attack you if you help them - help them anyway,
Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough - give the best you've got anyway,
Do all of this because it was never about them anyway, it is between you and God.

I actually used my favorite quote as a mission statement for my blog...here is how it reads on my About page:

    Follow your bliss...

This has been a quote I've loved for years. I wear it around my neck on a sweet silver charm by Andrea Waines, I write it my journal, I preach it to my boys. I haven't been living it though and I am on a mission to change that. My life now is chaotic and in my search for "my bliss" I discovered I love being with my boys, all stuff creative, home decor, kid stuff, fashion, reading, recipes, taking photos, and blogging. So here I go. Keen and inspired to document moments that move me. I will share my fashion finds, yummy recipes, great reads and anything else that brings me bliss. Clearing my head, seeking clarity, being present, having fun. Sweet and simple like a Snikerdoodle cookie - with lots of cinnamon!

"Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves...Do not seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will gradually without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer." R. M Rilke ("letters to a young Poet". Hear, hear, Tammy: "Leap and the net will appear" has been going through my head a lot the last few weeks as our renovation proceeds. It relates to both the financial outlay and the design choices which sometimes are a leap of faith. I too, found it in The Artist's Way but can't remember who actually said it.

Hi Carrie and Danielle, I've been following the 'Style Statement' story for some time now and think you two are awesome! Love the concept, love the book and I love my style statement. It's fun to hear your musings on various topics as well.
Here's my favorite inspirational quote. It comes from the prophet, Micah, in the Bible's Old Testament:
Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God. (Michah 6:8)
    Cheers,

Jeez... frankly, I had never looked up Sai Baba. While I do love the quote - and believe it is rightful - I am horrified at what I found by a simple google search of his name. Maybe there is more than one Sai Baba - but my initial searches reveal a man that should not be celebrated for his guidance. I am so very curious about the "trip" the ashram experience was in light of my new learnings. And how you felt to learn the awful stories. Not that this is inspirational in any way... Sorry everyone!
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
yes - his character is under very serious question - so many allegations, and whether they are true or not, the fact that that's circulating around him throws a dark shadow in his good wisdom. The guru-devotee relationship isn't one that works for me, so I didn't invest much energy into tuning into the nasty or glorious stuff around him. But I am curious about many, many teachers, and he was one on my path...a literal path of teachers in India that I checked out.

Last night after posting a quote I keep on my fridge, I realized that there are so many others - mostly poetry - that inspire me.

I particularly love this poem from Antonio Machado from a book aptly titled "Ten Poems that Will Change Your Life" - it speaks to the power of forgiveness and so much more.

Last Night As I Was Sleeping

Last night as I was sleeping,
    I dreamt—marvelous error!—
    that a spring was breaking
    out in my heart.
I said: Along which secret aqueduct,
Oh water, are you coming to me,
    water of a new life
    that I have never drunk?

Last night as I was sleeping,
    I dreamt—marvelous error!—
    that I had a beehive
    here inside my heart.
    And the golden bees
    were making white combs
    and sweet honey
    from my old failures.

Last night as I was sleeping,
    I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that a fiery sun was giving
    light inside my heart.
It was fiery because I felt
    warmth as from a hearth,
and sun because it gave light
and brought tears to my eyes.

    Last night as I slept,
    I dreamt—marvelous error!—
that it was God I had
    here inside my heart.

Translation from Spanish by Robert Bly - love it, love it, love it!
