Carrie and Danielle: What’s your cheap beauty solution?

  • Laurel · 1 year ago
Drugstore mascaras! You're supposed to replace your mascara every 3 months (maximum), right? So why pay $25 or $30 for something you're going to toss, when the drugstore brands have improved their formulations so much that their performance is just as good as the (usually overrated) department store brands? I highly recommend both Maybelline Full'n'Soft and Cover Girl Lash Blast.

Bronzer works as a great BLUSH, giving you a natural yet spohisticated look. Easy does it though, less is definately more. (Your face shouldn't look like it's floating above your shoulders.)
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
Drink water. Loads of it. And smiling makes everyone look fabulous.
  • Laurel · 1 year ago
PS I remember reading an interview with a dermatologist who said an effective anti-aging cream has already been invented: It's called SUNBLOCK. Pick one with a physical block (i.e. titanium dioxide) -- it's more stable (lasts longer), less irritating and very effective at blocking UVA and UVB rays. No point in buying expensive treatments if you're not taking care of the basics . . . .
  • Joshua · 1 year ago
SURFS UP! In addition to Danielle's homemade cosmetics, you can make a "beach hair" spray! Haven't you always wondered why your hair looks so amazing and natural after swimming at the beach? Well, it's the salt in the water. You can acheive the same affect at home! Buy a box of SEA SALT, for $3.00 add 1 tbsp. of salt for 1 cup of water! Put it in a spray bottle and use it after your shower once you've finished towel drying your hair.
Pin you hair up into finger waves and be a 1940's flapper for the day!

Sunscreen and sun. Sunscreen to save you whilst you get that important touch of colour. Call me a skin cancer sufferer in the making, but you can be careful (and here in Australia you HAVE to be) whilst still getting that glow. I love that glow. It makes you look like you've been on holiday and the sun simply makes you feel happy.
  • Laurel · 1 year ago
okay, I have to admit I'm sort of a Pallor Evangelist but you cannot, cannot get any color in your skin without concomitant damage. I used to live in California and several of my friends there had already had to have suspicious moles removed. Now I live in Italy where everyone (but me) is glamorously tan. However, good tip from a blog I read (jessicainrome.com) : Apparently Sephora's Tinted Bronzing Mist is great and natural-looking.
  • Caroline · 1 year ago
I know there's polarised difference of views on this one. I just hate putting on makeup and blushers and bronzers - seems like a lot of money and bother for something you can get naturally - and nothing makes me feel better than some time in the sun. Like most of my friends, I get moles checked regularly - our doctors have maps of them! But for sure, no sun between 11 and 2, and 30+ every single day. And being careful with the sun is important advice. Many thanks.
  • Laurel · 1 year ago
Yes, super-important for kids not to get sun!! I give my mum credit on that one. It is taking fortitude not to tan now -- the Italians really do stare and laugh and say "mozzarella" if you're pale . . . .

Dry brushing the skin (whole body) before showering or taking a bath. It exfoliates the skin, detoxifies, stimulates circulation and immune system, tones, tightens skins, invigorates and helps with cellulite. All you need is a soft natural fiber body brush with a long handle... Many articles in the internet on the how-to and multiple benefits of the Dry Brushing Technique...

yeah sleep zzzz amazing beauty makeover! But hey a walk in the bush or on the beach deep breathing as you go and filling your heart with gratitude is brilliant and check your face out in the mirror once you have done that!!!!
  • Girl-Woman · 1 year ago
Oh, thank goodness you didn't ask a deep philosophical question this morning. This is an easy one for me. After making a cup of green tea, I put the used green tea bag in the refrigerator. After it has cooled, I slather it all over my face and hands. It not only tightens the skin but adds stable antioxidants to your skin care regime. But like Carrie said, without sleep, there's not much beauty.

One of my favorite quotes on beauty:

    BEAUTY TIPS BY AUDREY HEPBURN
For attractive lips, Speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, Seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, Share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, Let a child run his or her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, Walk with the knowledge you'll never walk alone.

moisturize, moisturize and moisturize!! I use a great, cheap one from the pharmacy! Always use sunscreen, again cheap one from pharmacy, both products are perfume free. Eat lots of fresh veggies and fruits and drink a lot of water! It is what you put inside yourself that count the most. And a great tip at the end, smile at strangers! Be happy! Today is a beautiful day!

Self-tanning cream! Having modeled professionally for 17 years and still under the camera's scrutiny as an actor, I love the look of glowing skin, but have to stay out of the sun. I used to love Clarins, but recently switched to Kiehls. (Smells better, costs less.) I don't leave home without it!
  • Colette · 1 year ago
I'm with Laurel on the drugstore mascara. Reading labels and ingrediaents - just like you do food, is well worth the time. Pure lanolin does wonders for the skin. I also wear make-up as little as possible and drink water - not soda or tea, etc.
  • Meredith · 1 year ago
    1) Baggings some zzzzzs
    2) Lots of agua
    3) Laughter. Smiling. Confidence.

I second this one - Full n Soft is great.
  • Ngonzi Truth Crushshon · 1 year ago
Dove facial cleanser w beads in it.... works wonders on my face and neck. Scrub it on in a circular motion and wash it off with water and a towel. Simply excellent! AND of course DRINKING WATER, EXCERCISING and EATING FRUITS does wonders for the skin.

A beautiful friend from India introduced me to rinsing my hair with tea. After shampooing and conditioning my hair, I finish by rinsing with a tea of my choice. I like to use a lemon jasmin or lavender tea. It is so relaxing and makes my brown hair shine.

I Brew one gallon of tea using 6 teabags per gallon
Cool in glass jar in fridge
After washing and conditioning, pour over your hair
    Comb through and breathe deeply.

I either go dirt cheap or really expensive. Here are my bargains: Baby powder instead of expensive face powders. Staying out of the sun (yes, I read all the debate above - the strength of the responses is interesting)....I am from the South, where the sun is plentiful and the heat is brutal. I stay inside, thereby looking much younger than my chronological age. If I do venture out, I wear a heavy-duty sunscreen. And, like Laurel, drugstore mascara. Burt's Bees lipglosses (moisturizing and plumping). Baby oil or EV olive oil instead of expensive body lotions. Lots of sleep. Drugstore haircolor (semipermanent level 2...I find the permanent colors too harsh - they change the texture of my hair). There are some very good, very cheap drugstore shampoos and conditioners out there....some that mimic the more $$ brands. Less makeup as I age, as opposed to more.
Now....my splurges are another story entirely!

Lately I've been avoiding eating sugar, and my skin looks noticeably better. My skin is brighter somehow, and avoding sugar is the only thing I'm doing differently.
  • Holly · 1 year ago
Aspirin mask. I crush a few uncoated tablets and add them to yogurt or honey, apply the mixture to my face, and rinse it off after 20 minutes. The acetylsalycyclic acid exfoliates my skin - leaving it glowing and smooth. Safe (as long as you aren't allergic or inhaling it) and more effective than most of the expensive drugstore products that I've tried.

Also, I use jojoba oil for everything. Add a few drops to my lotion to make it more rich, add to sugar to exfoliate, smooth a drop into my hair to tame it and make it shiny, remove eye makeup, soften my cuticles with it, I could go on and on.

Cheers to all of your answers! I have nothing at all to add and I am happy that none of your suggestions were expensive. I am going to try as many as I can ......today!

I use cheap (eg Suave) conditioner for shave lotion - leaves you legs super soft and $2 gets you a through a couple of months. Same thing for body wash - cheap shampoo - and it's even more gentle on your skin because it's made for hair!

Cold baby feet sooth my weary eyes and the morning and warm my heart.
It's a wonderful thing but not at all logical since the puffy eyes are result of a poor sleeping babe...and I suppose I can't keep having the little nuggests forever...that would just be wrong in so many ways! LOL

p.s. love how your Q&A's get me thinking in the morning!

Smiling has always been my secret weapon. My Grandmother told me two things were essential to being ageless. Moisturising and smiling. It's true. The other day, I saw this rather ordinary woman slouching and looking bored. Then something amazing happened. She became engaged in conversation, sat up straight and smiled. Turned out, this rather plain looking woman was beautiful and much younger than I initially thought.

Okay, I'm so thrilled the beauty Q started with MASCARA! Carrie can attest to this, whenever we have our make up done professionally, the first thing I say to the make up artist is, "So what's the best mascara out there?" In order of most frequent recommendation:
    1) Maybelline
    2) Lancome (this is my personal fav, it ain't super cheap[$28], but the Ampicils is thick without being gooey and it DOES NOT SMUDGE (a probelem for me because I wear rich moisturizer...and I cry at commericals at least once a day.)
    3) Loreal's Voluminous

Which brings me to another hot issue in the eye department: EYE MAKE UP REMOVER. Can someone please make one that works?! Best I've found is Marcelle's Gentle Make-Up Remover for Sensitive Eyes (about $12), which is an almost identical formula to Lancome's $36 version.

I rub used coffee grounds on my thighs as an anti-cellulite treatment (in the shower). Most creams have caffeine listed as the main ingredient, so I skip the pricey creams and apply the grounds directly. They exfoliate the skin and leave behind a moisturizing oil. For the rest of my body, I use baby oil.
  • Allison · 1 year ago
Water. To encourage myself to drink enough I often think about that guy on Oprah who was sure he was ugly and hated being looked @. His skin was translucent from all the water he drank. He drank a ridiculous amount for fear of acne...but if you let go the fear aspect and only appreciate his beauty...helps me chose water over coffee every time. :)
  • Karryn Ransom · 1 year ago
Yes, yes it does. You can mix it with castor oil too. Conditions your lashes too - if you ever thought they needed conditioning (so you could braid them?). In any case. Olive oil works. And the best is Cetaphil cleanser.
  • Connie · 1 year ago
I mix my face lotion with my foundation and it's sheer and fine.

I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!!! I work in the in-home spa business and am a beauty junkie. haha Basically women get their girlfriends together, and I come in and pamper, relax them for the evening doing all sorts of beauty treatments like face masks, foot/hand/lip treatments and a relaxation exercise. I use it as a sort of personal ministry because as a woman I know the lengths we go to make ourselves beautiful inside and out...and the energy we use chasing that goal. My official answer is eliminating stress!!!!! As this beautifies from within and shows to everyone from your smile and glow to clearer skin.

(As a gift to everyone on this blog, whoever likes beauty/spa products for today only, I'll offer my 50% discount on my products...BeautiControl. www.beauticontrol.com/spastacyjarvis...but email me first as you can't get that discount from site)!! :) Happy Monday.

There is a growing body of evedence that we all need some time in the sun or we don't get enough Vitamin D. It need sunlight to make it active in the skin (that science may not be absolutely right but I am quite sure about the fact). Not hours of baking but just a short time.

I am going to try this for my legs. Any other tips for keeping your legs smooth? Sometimes when I am sleeping I scratch my legs so much they bleed.

Green tea is also supposed to be a natural sunscreen, especially when you rub it on your face like this.

I fourth. Maybelline's Lash Discovery has the perfect color, perfect wand, perfect formula.

My all-time favorite quote (and I have it written around my mirror in the bathroom) is from Anne LaMott - a most fabulous & spiritual human being, and also a wonderful author: "Joy is the best make-up, but a little lipstick never hurts."
  • Kat · 1 year ago
Good! Something I can do with the used tea bags. Do you just slather the tea bags over your body - as itself. Or do you cut it open and slater the tea leaves themselves?
  • Jane · 1 year ago
    Lifestyle-wise: Good, fresh food

Product-wise: Brushing teeth with baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (literally a drop on the bristles)
  • Jane · 1 year ago
Palmer's Cocoa Butter (in a tub). Start sparingly...a little goes a very long way!
  • Krysta · 1 year ago
Do you have the brand Cetaphil over here (I'm in Australia). I ahve extremely sensetive skin and can't rave about this inexpensive product ... and their cleanser! One step up from sorbelene.
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
Palmer's is GREAT. 'been around forever -- brown and orange label in white tub.
  • Samantha · 1 year ago
Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate...the sugar/olive oil mix is great for once a week or so and very moisturizing, but on an everyday basis, I use those mesh bath puffy's or some other rough material when I lather up my cheap shampoo/body wash - keeps EVERYTHING smoooooth :) Good luck!
  • Pearl · 1 year ago
As well as sleep another essential for beautiful skin is to drink plenty of water seeing as our bodies consist of a large percentage of water. Many drink their teas, etc. and feel that they're feeding their bodies enough liquid but it is water that is the essential liquid to keep our skin fresh, clear and "plump".

I prefer to drink purified water so that I'm consuming water without the chemicals which seem to taste ... hmmm .. unclear?

I've managed to also eliminate most caffeine drinks which only dehydrate the body as well. I find that teas such as African Red Rooibos Tea are pleasant tasting and a nice change.

When I DO have coffee, I remember that for each cup of coffee, I should be drinking 2 cups of water.
  • Carrie McCarthy · 1 year ago
Ok I am going to buy Palmers and a mesh scrub puffy!
    I feel relief coming, thanks.
  • Tamara · 1 year ago
Burt's Bees lip gloss is the greatest thing EVER! (I don't mean the balms, though those are nice. I mean the "Super Shiny Lip Gloss" in a squeezable tube.) All natural, very shiny, not too much color, smells great, tastes great! And it costs, maybe $4 or $6. I just read a piece online about all the lead in lipstick (especially red) and felt that much better having the gloss in my purse. (But, I'll tell ya, sometimes there's nothing more vamp than a vivid red mouth. And the Burt's doesn't do that.)
  • Karryn · 1 year ago
Clinique Lash Power - not the cheapest, but if you can weep at a butter commercial, then this is your mascara. Trust me. It. Will.Change.Your.Life.
  • Tamara · 1 year ago
Honey pats! Smooth a bit of honey all over your face. Let it sit for a while and get really sticky. Then pat, pat, pat your face all over. It exfoliates and leaves your face super smooth.

And check The World Beauty Book by Jessica Harris for all kinds of beauty recipes from all over the world.
  • Karryn · 1 year ago
Me too! But I drink green tea...does that mean my hair will turn...never mind.
  • Beth C. · 1 year ago
I won a bottle of Chanel's Gentle Biphase Eye Makeup remover as a giveaway and it is the best remover I've found for my very sensitive contact lens wearing eyes. I'm sure it's not inexpensive, but avoiding the major eye problems I used to have will be worth it wen I have to buy a bottle.
  • Beth C. · 1 year ago
First, start taking care of what you've got early in life. Doing so will keep one looking young and stronger longer. Second, I love Renee Rouleau's Facial Sponges and Toner Cloths. The sponges allow me to use very little water when washing my face and are washable/reusable. The cloths allow me to make toner last for forever when compared to cotton balls. Both a little investment, but I think they qualify as cheap solutions when you consider the saved water and longer life of product.

Botox. It works out to less than $100 per month, and if you do that, you don't need to wear makeup. I wear mascara and lipstick maybe twice a month, and that's it. You never get the time back! Why not go sit in a doctor's chair for ten minutes a couple of times a year, rather than spend ten minutes a day in front of a mirror?

The other thing is, exercise. I take karate, which is also about $100 per month. However, everyone has their own form of exercise which works for them.

Finally, the quote from Audrey Hepburn is perfect. No one is more beautiful than someone who is kind.
  • Janet · 1 year ago
I go for massage. I find after a good massage my face looks softer.

Yes, I pay for it, but it doesn't have to be expensive if you have a honey who can provide the massage.

So in general, sharing loving touches and hugs every day keeps one beautiful.
  • Romana Mirza · 1 year ago
I'm going to try Maybelline Full n Soft for sure! I think Lancome Definicils is the best and I haven't found anything that works better but it is expensive! As for eye make up remover. PURITY facial cleanser by Philosophy is the BEST EVER, very gentle and removes all your make up all at once, you don't have to 'pre treat' the eyes.

I live in the desert part of the year and we all know how drying that can be to your skin. I was using Cetaphil body lotion and loved it but still had dry skin. I started using the Cetaphil cream in a tub and LOVE this stuff. I thought it might be to heavy but it is not. I use it year round, even while I am in Seattle. I buy it at Costco.
  • Ann at One Bag Nation · 1 year ago
Baking soda mixed with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil, or even just baking soda by itself makes a nice exfoliant.

I've been thinking of trying to find a home made scrub and voila, here it is. Every year my kids and I make a homemade christmas gift for family and friends. This recipe may just be the ticket this year. I have some lavendar scrub in my shower these days but look forward to replenishing it when it's gone with some vanilla nutmeg homemade concoction. Here's to lovely scents and banishing dry skin!

I couldn't agree more. I love the results and don't spend nearly as much time or money on make up and products.

I randomly decided to try GoJo (or any other orange-pumice scrub), which my husband uses to clean his hands after working on the car. It's super cheap and VERY effective... not for use on face, but it will take off any and every dull skin cell, and leave your skin smelling citrus-y.
  • Nancy Marie · 1 year ago
I have very sensitive skin. Pure Aloe Vera Gel is the best thing I can possibly put on my skin. It is both soothing and moisturizing and of course it is inexpensive too! Love it!
  • Nancy Marie · 1 year ago
Oh, I hope it is alright for me to post another cheap beauty product I love. Wet n Wild lipstick is wonderful and is usually around 99 cents. The inexpensive price allows one to experiment with various shades. It really does last too! Right now I am wearing shade #505A. It is a lovely pink shade and something I would never have tried if it were expensive. :)

you must go to Kmart ... yes K mart and get the Image essentials Daily Renewal Cleanser with gentle micro beads, it's the K-mart brand that is compared to Olay, it unveils youthful, radiant skin... ok that is a bit much but it really works great I love it!!! and it's only like $5 or 6 bucks for a good sized bottle.
