Carrie and Danielle: What’s The Most Beautiful Part Of Winter For You?

  • Jennywren · 10 months ago
The air is crisp and cool and you can go on long, long walks without overheating but the best thing of all is being tucked up in bed with warm around you. Snuggling.

Carrie and Jessica pretty much said it--- but I'd add the long deep dreamtimes, and ice on the trees under moonlit starry skies after an ice storm.

Everything! I love the winter. Woke up this AM to about 5" of new snow and it is truly beautiful outside. Born on the Winter Solstice, makes winter my favorite time of the year. Loved the Camus quote this morning! For those of you struggling with winter... see the beauty of the earth resting in preparation for the spring, summer & fall.

    beautifully said Karel!

The most beautiful moments are when the sky is roiling with big, fat flakes of snow that are just starting to blanket everything - and you know it's going to last for hours & hours so we're storm -stayed.

I definitely have to agree with the stillness of winter walks...especially when the sun it out and it's not too freezing.

The way the rain eats into the snow and makes it look like coral, or sponge.

Here in Alabama we don't have much of a winter - no lovely snow. I love winter, though, for the respite from heat - at least we have cool weather, if not really cold very often. Winter clothes are my favorite - I would live in black velvet if weather permitted - and I am a big stew/soup maker.

I love my warm cozy sweaters and boots (they are sexy, stylish and WARM). I love to get all bundeled up and face the -20c (in Toronto) with the amazing feeling of cold air in my lungs and warmth in my body....really, I love the way I feel when I am bundeled up and facing mother nature as I treck around my neighborhood.

When it's over. (sorry, mom.) Nothing like a good ol' sweltering 95 degree day for me....
  • Karen · 10 months ago
The brillance of the blue skies reflecting on the fresh, unadultered, white snow at -20C from my couch.

And then I have to agree with Emily - when it is over and well into the high 20's and 30's again

Waking up to loads of fresh fluffy powder snow....it blankets every branch and building perfectly like a warm blanket. Hunkering in with my boys on the couch and watching old holiday movies.

The most beautiful part of winter for me are the stark contrasts of the season. I particularly love how it feels to go from the cold outside into the warmth of a fire-warmed home.

Snow storms that cause us all to pause and play and be cozy.

I actually love this time of year - the pale, golden sunlight and dramatic sunsets, the moon outlined by the black lace of the bare trees, the low skies expectant with snow, the dance of the blue and red flames in the heat stove. The fields lie white and still, quietly regenerating underneath their corn stubble surfaces. As a species, we need fallow periods -- apparently markets do too!

Last Sunday morning, my husband and I bundled up and had a winter picnic on the beach. I made pancakes from scratch! They were divine. But so too was the scenery...the icy trees in the sunlight, as someone earlier posted, were extraordinary. And tromping across the sand through snow drifts with a crisp icy crust, made us laugh. The beach in winter...it sparkled in a way we don't see in the summer...

When it first starts to snow, everything gets very quiet, as it blankets everything. You can't be sad or think about problems, you just tilt your head back and remember your childish innocence.

Long, long, nights alone with cats, books and television.

The week-end, morning ritual of sitting in front of the fire with fresh ground and brewed coffee and the papers. Also, a white Christmas to make the holidays perfect.

I like the imagination of it, and what it inspires. The crisp air is clear, spacious and dignified, somehow. You can stand tall in your jackets, and you're not sweaty or sticky. I feel better that way.

I LOVE the rosy cheeks on my boys after coming in from "working hard" on their fort. I love how at night, I feel like I'm in a big cozy nest!

For me, nothing compares with the freshly fallen snow on the blue spruce trees on my property. Having moved an hour north of the city a year ago, the beauty of winter in the country is that the snow stays a pristine white. When the sun is out, it sparkles like a diamond-studded blanket. When it's below zero (like this week!) it crunches underfoot. Even shovelling the walk is a joyful workout, when the air is crisp and cold. As the lettering on the wooden snowman on my front step says "Let it snow!"

Days like today, my soul refreshing Wednesday mornings when I head up to our local mountain with a friend, get up above the clouds to the bright sunlight and into the trails for a great workout, gab session and moments of awe from the view points. Love those endorphins!

Sweater weather!!! Cozy knits--hats, scarves, mittens, wraps, sweaters, afghans--I love them. I also love the cold outdoors and a cozy fireside indoors . . . crunching through the snow and then having tea or coffee or hot chocolate by a crackling fire. The heavier, heartier foods we all crave in winter--stews, homemade bread fresh from the over, luscious casseroles, and baked goods galore that it's just too hot in summer to make. The fresh, clean look of frost gilding hills and woods. The hint of bonfire smoke in the cold air. Rich colors, fabrics, and textures--velvets, beads, pine boughs, pink poinsetta plants--my Gran used to buy a pink one every year from me when the marching band was selling them as a fundraiser. Getting together with friends and family. Winter is my favorite season!!!

The very first snowfall covering autumn leaves (I grew up in Buffalo, NY so that's common) and then the seasons completion (another common sentiment among Buffalonians).

Did I mention I now live in San Diego, CA? :)

I live in the Okanagan Valley (Interior of BC Canada), and there is NOTHING more beautiful than when it snows here, in the middle of the night. The sky is BRIGHT like daytime with a grey hue, huge flakes fall from the sky, and the silence outside is deafening. This is what drew us back here to live & raise a family. I absolutely love it.

+ Getting my great grandmother's quilt out of the attic and using it on my bed
+ Making a big pot of pasta fagioli soup
+ Seeing bare branches against the sky

When it is finally over. Granted, I love seeing the local kids playing pond hockey, but I miss being able to wear my super high heels and skirts.
