Carrie and Danielle: What’s the best workshop or course you ever took?

  • Connie · 1 year ago
There were two in NYC years ago. One was at Parsons School of Design,
pre-Project Runway for sure; it was quick fashion sketching with live
models taught by a wonderful illustrator Pat Porter. The other was a one day seminar with the astrologer Caroline Casey when her book arrived (MAKING THE GODS WORK FOR YOU) and it was taught in SoHo at the
open Center; each of them was thrilling.

It wasn't really a workshop, but the best thing I ever did was get into Mary Kay cosmetics. The seminars and events are so motivational. I had no idea at the time, that those events would change my life. It was through Mary Kay that I learned of the Law of Attraction, Gratitude, looking beyond myself to help others, treating people according to the golden rule, etc. I knew of all of these things, but just in a general sort of way. Those few years when I was first starting out in MK I absorbed every word of my teachers. I am no longer a consultant, but the lessons I learned from that company were life changing.

The best workshop that I attended, and continue to attend on a yearly basis is Passion Painting. The technique called The Point Zero method was created by Michelle Cassou. It changed everything for me. Not just in my creative endeavours but in how I approached life, made choices and set goals.
You can read more about her technique at www.pointzeropainting.com

"Michele Cassou has designed a revolutionary way of unblocking the creative potential: The Point Zero method. This unique self-questioning method leads us into the wild, untamed place within us where there are no judgments or rules. This is the place where we can feel fully alive and creative, a place where we can express and explore the mystery of our lives."

'Approaching Literature,' an Open University course. I always wanted to study English Literature but let myself be steered away from it when I was younger because it wasn't 'useful' enough. I'm saving up for my next course, 'The Nineteenth Century Novel.' Can't wait!

I thought these classes were great - small and intimate in a personal setting. We focused on Deepak Chopra's Seven Spiritual Laws of Success and worked on building healthy practices into our lives through focus on the present. Classes were six weeks long and reasonably priced. I've met a great network of happy grounded women through the classes I've taken here

Transfeminism at a queer youth conference facilitated by two trans men. It was so powerful for me as a feminist to challenge my prejudices about trans women not knowing what sexism is really like and trans men rejecting their female identities so as to receive male privilege. Instead, the facilitators, Gunner Scott and Nathan Levitt, outlined the ways in which we have common struggles and common interests in challenging all oppression. It was eye-opening - I definitely had an "a-ha!" moment.

I took a wonderful weekend course on how to make beauty products from your garden...it was at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Murphy, North Carolina. This is a magical place...a camp for grown ups that offers many different art classes...dance, photography, mixed media, blacksmithing, wood turning, cooking, soap making, just to name some. The School is a great retreat for yourself, your honey, or group of girlfriends. The School lies in a beautiful mountain setting and all the meals prepared there come from the garden. That is what being in Amway did for me. I had no idea there was so much available to lift and inspire. I had never heard of Zig Ziglar before and the first time was on a tape - totally changed my thinking!

My coaching training with the Coaches Training Institute. It was life-changing both personally and professionally. It inspired me to shine brighter and bring all of me to the table whatever the situation.

My Nia white belt training with Martha Randall. Spending a week immersed in movement, music and magic was a joy.

I have been to many wonderful workshops and retreats it makes it difficult to choose the best one. However, I'll go with a Life, Death, Transition workshop with Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross.

This five day workshop was held at a former convent in Winnipeg, Manitoba. There were 65 people from all over the world. Deep personal emotional work was done. Work I didn't think could be done with so many people.

A few years later my husband and I were privileged to spend two weeks volunteering for Elisabeth at her office and ranch in Head Waters, VA.

    Life is filled with blessing.

A five-day writing course with www.dark-angels.org - on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Lots of peace and quiet, long walks, honest and inspiring conversations and red wine. It made me feel like a real writer, not just someone dabbling in my spare time.

I've taken lots of them, but the best by far was a sculpture class from my now good friend, Charles Flickenger. I did my first full figure in clay and now all I want to do is create. It's filled all the holes in my imagination and opened the door to a whole new world for me - one I never knew existed.

Like Jamie, my co-active training with the Coaches Training Institute. I came to life and learnt skills with my whole being to be able to support other people. Absolutely changed the way I looked at myself, my life and everything.

I recently completed a course on writing fiction - we were given assignments to write in different voices - first or third, passive or omniscient, to write descriptive pieces, and then present them in a workshop format. It not only opened doors of creativity to me, but also helped me to appreciate other authors - I now can see when a book is beautifully written, and understand the process they go through to get to that point.

Santa Fe Photography Workshops (Beginning Digital). Far beyond becoming one with your camera, it challenged the way I walked past a tree, stood near a friend and glimpsed my family. It forced me to s-l-o-w down and see the light ( a metaphor for life as well). It delivered far more than I payed....transformative is not too strong a word.

Very difficult for me to say, as I love workshops and many of them have changed my life. Finding great teachers is a talent of mine. I live close to the Open Center in Soho, NYC... If I had to choose, it would be Love Medicine for Valentine's Day, a herbal workshop with Robin Rose Bennett, which put me squarely on the path of my current career of herbalism. But other workshops that have been life altering were Sonia Choquette's Trust Your Vibes workshop, and another one taught by African elder Malidoma Some.

A photography workshop in the Alvord Desert of SE Oregon. Not only did I find one of my favorite places, but I got to spend a whole week photographing the calming sparse landscapes, developing film, and making prints. It was a moment when reality meets your dreams. The workshop was organized through the University of Oregon, my graduate school at the time.

I am a life-long learner and have attended literally hundreds of workshops, seminars & classes. All of have had an effect on my life. And sometimes these events will touch us far beyond what the curriculum might suggest.

My life was changed during Kim Chernecki's bconscious three day workshop in Toronto in spring 2000.

Although I'm no longer in the career that I discovered during the workshop, it opened me up to the endless possibilities within myself.

    1. 9th Grade English - taught by a wonderful teacher who appreciated my extreme geekiness and never spoke down to the class. Challenged us with Shakespeare, and made us watch Bridge on the River Kwai and Cool Hand Luke. Allowed me to be bright and curious and eclectic.
    2. 9th Grade Art (9th grade was a big year for me!) - based on "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" - changed the way I saw and informed every piece of art I have made since then.
    3. Transcendental Meditation - I've been a meditator since I was 4.

A music-in-worship workshop I attended when I was 15 (I'm 51 now) that got me started in hymn-writing. I've recently had two hymn texts published, and that long-ago workshop opened up that facet of my creativity for me.

5 years ago I hit a wall - some call it 'Saturn Return', I call it my transition out of a delayed adolescence at 32! Everything came to a head - work, personal, spiritual - the ever-evolving search for vision, purpose and meaning in my own life (yes, I have a penchant for navel-gazing and enjoy seeking so much that I forgot there was something that I sought!). As I tripped and stumbled along my path, I fell into the most poignant 'workshops' I have ever found. Through them, I tripped over myself - who knew, I was there all along? To call them 'workshops' doesn't quite do them justice - they were a journey...one that brought more fulfillment and authenticity to my life than I could have ever imagined at the outset. The skills continue to serve me - in fact they are now interwoven in the most subtle way with my self - they were there all along, I just had help in rediscovering them. They say the best kind of teacher eventually leads you to the point where they are no longer necessary - I found this here. For any of you in the greater Toronto area who are interested in direct experience leading you to where you have no idea you want to go - see for yourself - http://creative-earth.com. If it resonates...there's a reason.

Allison Armstrong's Celebrating Men, Satisfying Women. It profoundly altered my relationship with each of the men in my life~ lover, friends, ex husband, employees, my dad... I had no idea what I didn't know about men. I have since been experiencing a deeper appreciation of men, enjoyment of being a woman and growing in to the potential of this awareness, not only my personal life, but also the profound impact of how choosing harmony could heal our planet. Coping w Grief the workshop that I took w my coworker & sister Kristen...it was about the clt who keeps telling that same old story...and excercises to get the clt to see what would happen if they stopped telling the story.

Women & Gender w Dr. Donna Rawls at Fisk University. Discussed issues of women in leadership, media portrayals and the roles of women around the world. Very enlightening! I took this class in 2001 and it still remains fresh in my mind-7 years later. Mostly because I enjoyed the class and the teacher. That's rare to enjoy both. HA HA

The workshops offered by Something Different for Women: The Power of Right Now, You Inc. and the Relationship Course.

These workshops are hands down the most powerful classes I have ever taken. I have seen such transformation in myself, as well as incredible transformation in so many other women.

It is such a positive experience, and I gage the success of a workshop by the results that show up in my life. The growth I achieved in taking the Something Different for Women workshops surpsasses every other tool I have ever used... be it books, therapy, other workshops. These workshops get results. I wake up every morning feeling so grateful and lucky that I found these classes.

It's so fantastic to see the plethora of life changing courses out there. Looking back on all the things I've done, the there are two courses that aided major shifts for me:

    1) Free the Heart http://www.freetheheart.com/home.htm It was powerful and really helped me through a few things that needed some work @ the time.

    2) Marlene Schiwy's Journal writing courses @ UBC. http://www.writingcentre.ubc.ca/personal/groupi... It sounds ridiculous and I've been laughed @ more then once for admitting I took a course on journal writing, however there is something in the way that Marlene gently guides you to deeper consciousness. Writing becomes about finding what's in the unconscious, the deeper meanings of your life. And w/Marlene she keeps it so light enjoyable. She is one of my favourite people. I'm looking fwd to taking one of her week long courses in the south of France or Hawaii sometime.

I'd have to say the Excellence Series - The Pursuit of Excellence, The Wall, and The Advancement of Excellence. By far the most incredible life changing courses, for getting MORE of what you want out of life, and working through what is stopping you from obtaining what you want! AMAZING!

A few years back I was awarded a CTV Fellowship to the Banff Television Festival. Winners got to participate in a session of roundtable workshops with production industry leaders and ask them questions, for advice, practice pitches, etc. I made some incredible connections and more importantly, gained insight into the world of production. Most importantly though, I gained confidence knowing that I fit into this world.

The second best course I took was Set Etiquette...it taught me how to act on set. It has helped me from when I was a television reporter in the news, television producer of a breakfast show, and as an extra on shows like the L-Word and Bionic Woman. I can sure see those people who didn't take the course, and have a feeling they won't be asked back!

Of course now the best course I could possibly take would be one on puppy obedience. How times have changed!

Improv. It sharpens the mind and insists that you live in the moment. No script. No rehearsal. Just now. The basic skills of listening, clarity, confidence, and performing instinctively and spontaneously are considered important skills for ANYONE to develop. Viola Spolin is my idol. The two things that I participated in that still speak volumes are:

Retrouvaille - This "movement" changed the way that my husband and I communicate and gave us the tools to create and nurture a healthy and loving marriage

Vancouver Crisis Line Volunteer training - When I thought I wanted to go back to school and do my Psychology Degree, a good friend and Psychologist himself, suggested that as a first step (to really see if this was what I wanted to do as a career) I go through the training and work as a volunteer for the Vancouver Crisis Line. He had done this himself and said that all of his years of schooling he still felt that the 6 weeks of intensive training he had at the Crisis Center was some of the best information he ever received. Following his suggestion, taking the course and then volunteering for over a year, I agree that the training that I received was and will always be totally invaluable. The art of "Listening" and being an "Empathic Listener" is lost on the majority of us. If more people knew how to listen, I believe, our world be a much better place.

It might sound lame, but a course in Action Writing.
It teaches you to cut out everything unnessary and just focus on the point you are trying to bring across. It is mainly used in business, but I apply it in most of my correspondence and, if necessary, also when I speak.

It was one of the highlights of my life so far and I did actually sit at her feet. Elisabeth was a force of nature. You're right - it was an immense honour. One of those experiences you have to pinch yourself to realize it's actually happening to you and even then you're not absolutely certain it's real!

I, too, had a wonderful high school English teacher, Miss Barber. She made Shakespeare come alive. The Merchant of Venice and MacBeth were the two plays we studied. I understood nothing when I read on my own, but when Miss Barber read, the heavens opened, light shone down. It was wondrous.

I've often wondered if my love of language came from dear, sweet, little Miss Barber.
  • Ophira · 1 year ago
Indeed! Saturn moves into a new sign every 2-3 years, so when you're around 28 and 54, it "returns" to the sign it was in when you were born. This equals a major growing up moment (sometimes a midlife crisis). You may have to reckon with some demons, but in doing so, you discover a critical part of your life path.
  • Ophira · 1 year ago
I heartily second this! Amazing course.

The Canadian National Voice Intensive. 6 weeks at UBC, focus on the voice and body, working on Shakespearean text. Changed my voice, changed my life.

I have to also say BeCome Passion with Dr. Cheryl Fraser. A weekend exploring SEX was the last thing my husband wanted to do with me in a room full of people but it was discrete, profound, insightful. Rare to find something so practical too, when it came to sex. We had a great time. It was a good tune-up. A little time for just us, post kids, you know?

Landmark ILP was the best of the best for this "skin bag." I had a very special sister-in-law (Carrie...yes the same as above!) push me into the Forum and i went for it. It was very pivotal. I am constantly using what I learned in family, work and even in recreational pursuits. I am transforming a multi - billion corporation with what I was given. very powerful.
I got on track. Carrie was the catalyst.
  • Deborah Drake · 1 year ago
Well, I too have taken the Landmark Forum, in fact the entire Curriculum for living. And what's more I also have taken the Edward Tufte workshop, here in Seattle years back and it is AMAZING, he was!
And my current and most prized experience is a course offered by inviteCHANGE - Academy for Coach Training that is aptly named LIVING YOUR VISION. Clarify values, distilling essence, crafting a master plan in a collective and supportive group left all of us present with dreams to be realized, clarity-clarity-clarity, friends and confidantes and bonds that will last a lifetime. Fran Fisher created this course 10 years ago and it's simply a gem. BTW, this site is DIVINE as are you both.

I recently trained with Denise Linn in Soul Coaching for nine days. It was beyond amazing. She was this amazing combination of spiritual, though still remaining human and real. Her honesty and encouragement to quit worrying about being perfect was incredibly liberating.

Her home and seminar was a great example of becoming aware of what is possible in life. She has created this wonderful program, home, and life. I felt as though I was walking around in something so unique, it was obviously the product of someone's hard work and very specific dreams. It was absolutely life changing and inspiring and she continues to be supportive in my life. The website is www.soul-coaching.com - I can't recommend it enough.

    Basic and Advanced PSYCH-K Training!

It's really hard to say that it was the 'best', because there are two others that were life changing as well....but alas, our instructor, Darryl Gurney, is a man with wisdom just pouring out of his spirit. I laughed (sometimes rolling on the floor), I cried, I discovered that subconscious beliefs can be changed, easily and effortlessly. My life has been forever changed from these 7 days of inner work and exploration. I'm so happy to be able to offer this work in my own Soul Coaching practice and help others on their life path. I highly recommend exploring PSYCH-K!!!
