Explaining any holiday as presents and light bulbs is not the truth of the story.

Re: This Year, Teach Your Children The Real Meaning of Christmas

Teaching the traditions of Christmas to children is very important. In fact child teaching is more effective at the age of 3-5 as it's then that they absorb every detail.

Re: This Year, Teach Your Children The Real Meaning of Christmas

Thanks, Wendy and Maz.

I don't care whether the Christmas story is true or not, Maz - I just like it as a story.

Re: This Year, Teach Your Children The Real Meaning of Christmas

No-one knows the real story because it was all so long ago and could well have been distorted out of all proportion. Is the bible story even true? Who knows (and if so, how do they?) To my mind, Christmas is about family and your own traditions and hopefully helping people who are less fortunate than we - but I always blanch at the last one because we should be helping people all year round, not just at Christmas. Anyway, I love the carol singing and the church services and have been to church on Christmas Eve, sometimes even to the midnight service, where I've always been welcomed with open arms - never spurned because I don't believe and don't attend regularly. All churches maintain they are always open to everyone, and that's the way it should be. The true spirit of Christmas to me is about loving and giving. It doesn't really matter whether we are believers or not. That's what I think, anyway, for what it's worth!

Re: This Year, Teach Your Children The Real Meaning of Christmas

As should we all, Christians or not.

Thank you for a lovely sentiment and article.
