I gave up caffeine for two years while I was pregnant and breastfeeding. I cut it cold turkey and was surprised how quickly I readjusted and didn't need the perk up. But I did after a while start drinking decaf, for just the reasons you mention above. I'm not a morning person and I need that slow-start coffee reflection time. Plus, I just LOVE the smell and taste of coffee. Decaf filled the void for me.

It is funny- giving up coffee during pregnancy was easy for me too. I also love the smell of coffee . My latest strategy- go to whole foods and smell the fresh coffee beans as I sip my tea!

Hmm, I had oatmeal and very strong espresso for breakfast this morning. I console myself with what I'm sure must be a myth -- that espresso has less caffeine than regular coffee...

I gave up coffee in the morning about six months ago, which was difficult for me, because I not only love the reflection time that comes with coffee, I LOVE coffee. My anxiety levels were getting so high I'd have panic attacks on a daily basis. At first, I tried to switch to decaf only, but that ilttle bit of caffeine still gave me the wild energy fluctuations. In the end, I cut out the coffee, went through a few days of the non-coffee yawns and headaches, and my anxiety went away almost completely. Now I usually drink water in the mornings or pepermint tea. I feel much more energized when I start my day with a cup of water. Every now and then I have a cup of decaf and some morning reflection time.

Hi Pearl, I love my morning coffee ritual. Coffee used to be something I drank with friends at a coffee shop occasionally. I almost never brewed it at home and would NEVER drink instant, the coffee of choice in my parents' home. A few years ago, I discovered that my morning coffee had health benefits. I stopped getting frequent headaches. So I started brewing a cup of espresso in my mini espresso brewer. I sent away for the $30 coffee maker with "box tops" from Medalga D'oro espresso, my favorite brand recommended by foodie Arthur Schwartz. I bought a frother for $20 and I whip my milk to make my own latte every morning. I love drinking my coffee, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, as soon as the last kid is out of the house. It is my moment of self-care. I bookend my day with my other self-care ritual, a hot steamy bath with bath salts or other yummy bath product. With these bookends, I am guaranteed to love myself at least twice a day!

I've been on the GI diet for quite some time now and i'm ever so grateful that it allows me to still drink a cup or two of coffee each day although I do try to cut it out altogether if I can, but like you I sometimes feel that urge. Unlike you, I cave in!
