Carrie and Danielle: In terms of celebrities, whose fashion sense do you admire?

  • Laurel · 1 year ago
It's always interesting to see how celebrities put themselves together -- or, more accurately, how their stylists put them together -- but frankly, it's hard to get excited about the current crop's personal style; they tend to be rather homogenous. One consistently interesting source for celebrity-generated styling ideas is: http://frugal-fashionista.blogspot.com/
The web is great to troll for ideas. A more contextual take, one that will likely resonate more with Carrie and Danielle readers, is Linda Grant's fashion blog:

Reese Witherspoon - she's always appropriate - dressy for the runway and not too (if ever) over-exposed for her everyday life.
Besides, she has a killer smile - and that's really the best accessory!
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
I second Carrie - old Hollywood, where it was all about class and understated sexiness. A sense of fun, a bewitching wink, and the confidence to pull it all off.

I find myself consistently going back to Katherine Hepburn and Audrey Hepburn. Their classic style and elegance feel natural to me.
  • Chantal · 1 year ago
I'm with Danielle on this one. Who's representin' ethnic, global babe?
  • Romana Mirza · 1 year ago
I'm with you Elizabeth. Katherine Hepburn, hands down.

Because I was in the courtroom for so many years, I always looked to newscasters -- Diane Sawyer, for instance. Now that I am retired, I have broken loose from the chains of professional fashion, but I continue to channel Diane Sawyer fashions. I guess my most authentic style is classic with a twist of whimsy -- very Diane.

I like a lot of Oprah's dress up. I like sophisticated dress with enhance jewelry. accessories can make or break the most beautiful outfit.
  • Kirsten · 1 year ago
I really seem to gravitate toward Jennifer Aniston. She always seems to easily put together with very simple styles. I love Calvin Klein for that very reason and she wears a lot of his fashions. Simple lines, clean, fits well and looks good. I think I'm just at that place in my life where I want and need simplisity - get up and go styles that still make me lool put together.

Or is that just Jennifer Aniston wearing Calvin Klein??

I love the way Angelina Jolie dresses. In fact I love everything about Angelina Jolie especially her forthrightness. I saw her interviewed by James Lipton on 'Inside the Actors' Studio' and she was delightful. So beautiful, so natural. I like it, too, that she truly cares and she is so honest.

I think all of one's self can be expressed in what one wears.
  • Andrea Torres · 1 year ago
Definately Audry Hepburn, classic elegant strong no doubt a woman. my favorite casual look is jeans and white classic button shirt a bit oversize, diffinately barefoot!!!!! perfect for a man or woman.
  • Kim · 1 year ago
Reese Witherspoon. She looks amazing without seeming to try. I aspire to the kind of casual chic she embodies.
  • Trish · 1 year ago
I always think Thandie Newton and Diane Kruger look amazing - feminine and classic without looking too preppy or too coordinated. Charlize T. too. Reese is a little too predictable for me. What about Erykah Badu for global ethic style?
  • Danielle · 1 year ago
you know who used to rock, but isn't really 'out there' any more? Lisa Bonet (from the Cosby Show, former wife of Lenny Kravitz.) She always did something avanta garde but bohemian.
  • Danielle · 1 year ago
oooo...forgot about Erykah. She's heavy on the wild, but she is definitely is working her Nubian Queen thing in a great way.
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
Katherine Hepburn in her Grecian robe in The Philadelphia Story.
Ginger Rogers in a short-sleeved mock-turtle navy blue straight sequined gown.
    Myrna Loy as Nora Charles.
    Deborah Kerr in....well...anything.
    Grace Kelley in Rear Window.
I love old Hollywood. Not so much New Hollywood.
  • Dena · 1 year ago
Nicole Kidman - always a dignified elegance - very much like the old-style Hollywood celebrities
  • Asha · 1 year ago
    Gweneth Paltrow.
  • Ella · 1 year ago
Drew Barrymore and Mandy Moore. Mostly because I think I would like both of them as people.

    Meryl Streep.

Oh! Sophia Coppola. Her style is so simple but so perfect. Yeah, her. I'll just hang out with the other ones.
  • Krystl · 1 year ago
Chloe Sevigny has an amazing, individualistic sense of style. A lot of the things she wears wouldn't suit me at all, but I really admire her willingness to experiment, and her general success in looking great and original. I love Zooey Deschanel's girliness, even though I personally sometimes feel uncomfortable in ruffles. I love it because it so perfectly suits HER, and expresses her character.
  • Laura · 1 year ago
Reese Witherspoon for sure. For her simplicity and her skill at dressing for her height and size. And Audrey Hepburn also for her simplicity.
  • Cindy · 1 year ago
Lauryn Hill has pretty great ethnic style as well.
  • Cindy · 1 year ago
I love old styles as well. My favorite fashion era is the roaring '20s , so anything featured in the Great Gatsby is perfect! Coco Chanel and Louise Brooks would probably be the best representations of that style. I haven't found a current celebrity that perfectly embodies that kind of sophisticated, romantic style, but there are pieces of what they wear that I am really attracted too. Menswear with feminine elements is always a perfect look to me.
  • Stacy · 1 year ago
I concur on a lot of these choice...DEFINITELY Audrey Hepurn...classic elegance (hey bet that was her style statement)!! Also, big fan of Old Hollywood...Lucille Ball (she had killer dresses/suits), Sophia Loren...
New Hollywood - I go for those that capture "old Hollywood" like Gwyneth, Jennifer Garner, Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes...LOVE ANGELINA JOLIE's style.. she looks great in anything.
  • Larissa · 1 year ago
My all time favorite has to be Marlene Dietrich, she has this mysterious vamp quality to her- even in men's tailoring! As for a modern day celebrity, my two favorites are Angelina Jolie and Dita Von Teese. Angelina has the same mysterious sexiness, even in her more conservative outfits, and just looks like a goddess in her pregnancy styles. Dita invokes old Hollywood glamour and burlesque all with a twist solely her own.
  • onesnap · 1 year ago
Right now I do not admire any celeb style. They are okay but all smoosh together in my head. Nicole Kidman has a classy way of dressing that I admire, but that style is not me. I've never gone into a salon and said "make me just like this magazine photo"
  • Toni · 1 year ago
I also love Audrey Hepburn's style; however, she was very thin and small boned, and I am NOT very thin abd small boned, so I always wished I could dress like her, but the effect was just not the same. Very frustrating for me. Obviously, I need to find my REAL style (book ordered!) I'm often attracted to things that don't work for me.
  • L.K. · 1 year ago
I look to old photos of the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, etc. I love a little of that androgynous bad *ss rock and roll style combined with the classiness of Isabella Rossellini--a combination I do not necessarily pull off :)
  • lezin bogan · 1 year ago
in terms of celebrity fashion, i admire the way kristen davis' character charlotte york, from sex and the city dressed. she was always pulled together and comfortable classic. i am somewhat of a conservative dresser. katie holmes' latest fashion is neat looking. i like clean lines and classic fabrics. calvin klein, georgio armani, prada. and of course....black.
  • Connie · 1 year ago
Meryl Streep as Anna Wintour in "Devil Wears Prada."
  • Marissa Bracke · 1 year ago
I love Marilyn Monroe for iconic feminine sexiness, but really dig the way Princess Diana could do a strong level of femininity with a definite smolder to it, without compromising her ability to convey dignity and grace. I too adore the ease about Angelina Jolie's beauty; as she's grown into an elegant woman, she's dropped a lot of her more extreme style edges, and yet somehow still stands out from the crowd-- even when she's in slacks and a tank top in the desert. I think Dita Von Teese is elegance embodied. I'm also drawn to sleek and simple lines (think Gwyneth Paltrow's famous pink Oscar dress, Jennifer Lopez's grecian goddess mod-toga look, Anne Hathaway's usual red carpet attire, etc.) paired with bold and funky accessories.
  • Susie Hutchinson · 1 year ago
I've always admired Catherine Hepburn, she was ahead of her time, and led a movement in fashion. She insisted upon wearing pant suites in film, and even wore them to the Academy Awards.
  • Marissa Bracke · 1 year ago
Oh! (slaps forehead) Katie Holmes! Regardless of one's opinion about her relationship with Tom, the consensus seems to be that her fashion sense has soared, and I agree. She stands out from her peers in her personal style, IMO.

As to freaky Zen celebs, I immediately thought of Persia White from the TV show Girlfriends. In season one, she was kind of run-of-the-mill hippie/college-student vibe. But she's really created her own style vibe, and she's unafraid to be bold about her personality through her clothes, her tattoos, and her jewelry. I love it.
  • Vicky · 1 year ago
Sarah Jessica Parker - there is a type of unique pizazz she demonstrates on every outfit she wears. Very urban-chic/classy/fun.
  • Lynda · 1 year ago
I'm more of a Meg Ryan type.....classic, traditional....interesting question..because by noting my style of dress I'm thinking that my philosphy/theories regarding many subjects are very liberal, progressive.....does this mean that my outer state isn't really reflecting my inner state.....ummmmmm
  • Andrea Devis · 1 year ago
I always admired the way Josephine Baker wore bananas like nobodies business! Old Hollywood definitely! The way Edith Head Dressed Clara Bow, amazing, Audrey Hepburn always put together. I relate more to the style of Katharine Hepburn with the love of pants and suits. DV and Lisa Fonssagrives for feminine perfection. Jacques-Henri Lartigue's muse Renee Perle was very fashion forward for her time.
  • Carol Z · 1 year ago
I also like old Hollywood. I think women dressed more simply then & more elegantly. They had grace. Audrey Hepburn & Katherine Hepburn are 2 that stand out. I like Gwenyth Paltrow, Susan Sarandon, Reese Witherspoon, Liz Hurley, Meryl Streep, & Natalie Portman. They always look at ease with who they are.
  • Chantal · 1 year ago
Love her! And her daughter Zoe has a pretty cool style too. How about the vintage dress that Nora Jones wore to the Grammy awards show (a couple of years ago)!
    Original, No stylist needed.
  • Kat · 1 year ago
I love the style of musicians like Patti Smith and Marianne Faithfull and even Bruce Springsteen in the 1970s. And of course the Stones in the 60s and 70s were fantastic. And, today musically-speaking, Kazu Makino of Blonde Redhead has my favorite style: graceful, sensual and very subtle. But lately I've been looking at pictures of Jane Goodall in her youth and Amelia Earhart for inspiration. Sort of a clean style that gives you room for action and adventure.

In terms of actresses, I admire actresses like Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston, who seem impervious to trends. As I get older, I definitely take inspiration from that. I also like the cleaner looks of Kirsten Dunst and Sofia Coppola as well.

(Oh! And in terms of my favorite freaky Zen celeb, I actually really love Lisa Bonet's style: bohemian, definitely, but with bits of preppy and rock 'n roll thrown in. I always loved her back in the "Cosby Show" day.)
  • Debbie R · 1 year ago
Hilarious! Josephine was worth admiring for her sureness in her skin!
  • Daniel Gibbons · 1 year ago
Sadly he's no longer with us, but it's got to be Steve McQueen.
  • kerrymac · 1 year ago
I like Reece Witherspoon's style...or Mandy Moore's style in movies especially, she has an amazing stylist. She always has a casual, quirky, vintage-y look that looks so unique. I also like Bylthe Danner ( I think that's her name) Gweneth Paltrow's Mom has great hair and elegant, simple clothes. www.snickerdoodles.typepad.com

    Grace Kelly. 'Nuff said.

I really admire, classic fashion taste, especially from Audrey Hepburn, Scarlett Johansson, and Natalie Portman.. they know how to keep their fashion style modern yet classy and very feminine.

I agree that celebs tend to be homogeneous and boring. Check out one of my favourite blogs where real people with true style are featured.

Sharon Stone. Always put together. Romantic, classy, perfect hair and makeup, and what a body. She works out!
  • Kelly · 1 year ago
I like women who dress with simplicity, sophistication, and are appropriate. In general, I think Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Aniston dress well and show class. And of course, Audrey Hepburn is always a classic and lovely choice.
  • coletteburnham · 1 year ago
I am a Lauren Bacall fan.
  • Beth C. · 1 year ago
Audrey Hepburn or Grace Kelly without a doubt. I would love to have a wardrobe like either woman had, accentuated with a full collection of Miriam Haskell demi-parures, Delman ballet flats/Ferragamo heels and Hermes Birkin/Kelly bags. I also love that each had her career/official obligations, a family and a strong sense of commitment to making the world a better place through service to others. Gracious, gentle, kind, excellent, elegant, bold and feminine all together.
  • Darcey · 1 year ago
This is always such a great question! Thank you Laurel for the great blogs! I love asking my clients this one-and i often get repeat answers; Audrey Hepburn, J Lo, Reese Witherspoon. Me personally, i'm all about Cate Blanchett! she is a combination of everything that is strong but feminine, timeless and new, classic and contemporary.
  • laurie_matthews · 1 year ago
I love the way Tea Leoni is classic and a bit preppy, but I also love those with more of an artistic and carefree side like Drew Barrymore. And then of course I love how effortlessly chic Sophia Coppola always appears to be.
  • Hilma · 1 year ago
Ooh this one was so easy - Bette Midler. Whether staring in a movie or just being herself, she seems to have an eclectic look to her - unique to her only. That is what i love - the unique, the identity of the choice of fashion as personal.

    thanks Carrie,
Loved the Sartorialist, the photos are great!!! Great Blog.

I'm sandwiched somewhere between the character, "Carrie," from SATC (SJP) and Niecy Nash, from TLC's Clean House. LOL
  • Traci · 1 year ago
Sarah Jessica Parker, Drew Barrymore, Kiera Knightly, Michelle Williams, and Audrey Hepburn.

Picturing Audrey is the way I keep myself in check. Coco Chanel said to take one thing off before you leave the house. Instead, I just think of how I could "Audrify" my look just a tish. It totally works.
  • Angela · 1 year ago
I too love the Grecian dress style (Jennifer Lopez) that Danielle mentioned. It's okay, in my opinion. to look to celebrities for style tips, after all, it is because they have stylists and resources, that they can be a great source of inspiration. The Sartorialist website sounds intriguing, I will have to look into it!
  • Angela · 1 year ago
Love that term "Audrify". Maybe that can be a style statement word one day, lol.
  • in awe · 1 year ago
michelle williams... yep. I like her laid back indie rock, yet feminine style... gorgeous.
  • Shannon Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
Kate Moss for always being three steps ahead of every on else. Marc Jacobs for consistently creating handbags I covet and only occasionally bring myself to actually buy due to their price tag. Agyness Deyn, the latest model who is a perfect blend of punky tomboy and fashion princess (like me!).
  • Alison · 1 year ago
    I agree!

I'm into Jennifer Aniston's Style. She dress up soooooo cool. I just love the way she match dress up and the way she talk's, So sexy. I like her very much.
