Carrie and Danielle: How has astrology influenced your life or a decision?

  • Krysta · 1 year ago
I am not sure what it means to be an Aquarian? And while I AM interested, there's so many confusing websites and confiticing magazine monthlies ... does anyone know a great website that explains it all simply?

My website has some information and some articles in the archive that you may find interesting and helpful. Astrology is a wonderful tool in so many ways and offers an amazing perspective on our life here on earth. www.astrology-fengshui.com

A Libra here - I have several books that I have read about Libras in general, but I have never had a reading specific to me. I like knowing what makes me tick and I have learned a lot just from the "general" astrology information out there. I also learned about my husband and the possible conflicts that we could have -- and I have learned how to diffuse those conflicts before they get too big. Of course I didn't marry a sign compatible with mine, but knowing this ahead of time has really helped a lot and we have become compatible.
  • Kristin · 1 year ago
I find astrology fascinating, not least because it's been affecting people since the Bronze Age, longer than most world religions. Opening myself to my Libra tendencies has helped me deal with my personality - such as my intense need for balance, my hyper-sensitive nose, my choice to live abroad and my rare lashings of anger when things aren't fair, to name a few. Learning more about my rising sign and Chinese astrology sign (Ox, for me, which often contradicts Libra) has also helped in my self-assessment. Learning the signs of others can help to explain conflict, work ethics and ambition, and can help in relationship-building. My favourite weekly forecast is from Rob Brezsny: http://www.freewillastrology.com/horoscopes. Astrology is a wonderful tool to add to understanding, but not to take the place of responsibility.

Did you know that all the Kristins I've met are Libras??! Strange... :)

A bit of info about astrology: It is supposed to help people understand themselves and what their future holds in regard to their birth date and the position of the celestial elements.

It is commonly believed to have originated in Babylon, though many other places practiced around the same time. Babylon suffered a nasty and completely unexpected takeover in 539.

Sir Isaac Newton and French psychologist Michel Gauquelin have conducted interesting experiments with astrology.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade here but I have never been influenced by astrology. Doesn't it take away from our humanity to think we are being guided by or we are the way we are because of
giant components controlled by gravity and just doing their job?

I plot my course, I control my future, I am responsible. I do not leave these important elements of what make me human up to inarticulate balls of matter who cannot understand my feelings or thoughts, who cannot feel love or care about me.

And The Astro Twins have answered all my questions - I'm definitely an AQUARIAN ... I love what they siad about "Where You'll Find Aquarians: Backpacking through the Swiss Alps, picketing a company with unfair hiring practices, coaching a Little League team, revolutionzing the industry you work in"
What do you think, fellow Aquarians?????
  • Brenda · 1 year ago
Not really. I can relate to everything I've read about Aries (along with every other sign!). But as a Christian, I rely on Spiritual guidance when making life decisions.
  • Mackenzie · 1 year ago
I know very little about astrology (except that I am a Capricorn!) and am interested to read everyone's responses today!

Cancers are caring, compassionate, and take things to heart. They can also be really moody and sensitive. I'm not sure if I have subconsciously taken cancerian aspects and incorporated them into my character, or if they were there to begin with. Although horoscopes often ring true, they are written in such broad generalizations that it is difficult to take them with anything greater than a grain of salt (at least from magazines or newspapers).

Alternatively, I have a deck of tarot cards that help me reconnect with the wisdom of the universe (and myself). Each card represents a parable emerging from a wide number of sources; there are stories about Jesus and great Sufi masters, while others stem from the Tao, Zen Buddhism, and other wisdom traditions. While this deck can be used to do regular tarot readings, providing insight into relationships or situations, I like to select one card each morning and read the parable that accompanies it. I find that it brings a fresh outlook to each day, keeping me grounded and open to whatever experiences the day has to offer me.

Ever since I was a little girl I was fascinated with astrology. Up until now, I've used it more to gain a deeper understanding of my self than to plot my path. Knowing that I'm a Sag (fiery, lively, optimistic, impulsive, a seeker) with heavy Virgo influence (meticulous, detail-oriented, perfectionist) helped me understand and embrace my contradictions.
On the journey, I think of looking to astrology very much like checking the weather forecast. There are some days that are better for sailing than others, both on the water and in our lives.
  • Dena · 1 year ago
I completely agree with A.D. - it is totally illogical to believe that the premises on which astrology is based have anything to do with our day-to-day lives - nature/nurture has a much greater influence, as well as time and unforseen occurence. I would go a step further and say that involvement in such things as astrology and seers can even be dangerous if you look into the spiritistic background of each and find out where the influences are actually coming from.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
Astrology has helped me to understand myself better. However, the only astrologer I consult is the one in the daily newspaper! This, of course, leaves much to be desired and is seldom 'on'.

I have read a lot about my Sun sign - Sagittarian - Moon sign - Capricorn - and Rising - Aquarius. I AM Fire like my Sun - a homebody like the Capricorn - the Earth. I'm not sure how I'm affected by Aquarius.

I do not use Astrology to make decisions.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
Emily, I, too, like Tarot. I have a friend who is a Sensitive and she will often do a reading for me over the telephone. She lives in Florida. I live in Ontario! My Tarot cards are Goddess cards.

I like the idea of choosing one card each day and thinking on that. Presently I'm using The Four Agreement cards. I will consider using my Tarot, too, or later.
  • Jess · 1 year ago
When I read more about what it means to be an Aries, it made so much sense as to who I was and why I reacted to things a certain way.
I haven't looked into it too much, but I usually pay attention to when Mercury's in retrograde and prepare for communication blunders.
  • Joannie · 1 year ago
I'm curious why you call yourself 'The Goat'? Isn't Capricorn the goat (my son is a Capricorn) and Libra the scales of justice?
  • Tammy · 1 year ago
Ever since I was a little girl and first read Linda Goodman's Sun Signs, I have been hooked on astrology. I am a Scorpio- always aspiring to be the eagle type and not the grey lizard or scorpion varieties. Astrology, in applying it to my personal relationships, has always added a layer of richness and texture to the people in my life, and I really like to solve the puzzles of people. There have been many times in my life where I have realized certain truths about people that spring from the knowledge of their sign.
  • Xai Vicente Charles · 1 year ago
I've never given Astrology too much thought until today. The Astrotwins described my sign so accurately that I will put them on my "life advisory board" to pick up on what Danielle said. As a Taurus they had me pegged right down to my favorite color: green.

    I'm hooked.
  • JoeM · 1 year ago
Being the practical Capricorn that I am, I married an Astrologer, so the impact on my life is obvious! She's taught me all about the times that I should be careful in my decision making, and of course I've tested most of them only to learn she is usually correct. Like my new car that burned up, because I insisted on buying it when Mercury was retrograde. Sigh.
  • Ginger · 1 year ago
I just started reading a book which provides great basic information about Astrology and tools to better understand your chart. The Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need by Joanna Martine Woolfolk.

I love relaxing into "mercury in retrograde" when travel or communication feels challenged in my life. When I then find out that we're in mercury in retrograde, I can laugh and relax, and it always seems to clear things up (more than being upset about something!)
  • Cecile · 1 year ago
    Bonjour mes amis!!

Well, if the horoscope is good it cheers me up.. Otherwise, Bof! Nonsense... Never influenced a decision... But then, I shouldn't shun it... I believe there is sometning to be said for planet alignment and Zodiac signs and personalities... Also I have never had the opportunity to work with a really experienced astrologer. Maybe there is something I am missing even though I have researched it considerably. I even ordered my own chart and learned to make charts. It's more complicated thn meets the eye. But I am degressing... I see Astrology as an interesting subject, but I wouldn't schedule my swearing as Governor at midnight because the starts say so... (wink)

I am a huge fan of astrology, and I highly recommend that everyone get their natal chart and analyze it. My chart makes so much sense, and it has helped me to relax about some things that I was worried about. If you don't understand anything else, I think understanding your North Node is very important because it has to do with the main focus area of your life. All of your other planets work to support the focus that you have in your life. My North Node is in the life arena of careers, and everything in my life has truly revolved around that. I also have fire all over my chart - Aries Sun, Sagittarius Moon, Sagittarius Rising, and Fire Dragon (Chinese astrology) - which basically means that I am independent, creative, and I need a lot of variety in my life. Understanding that has helped me to know why I hate routines and why I need to do my own thing as much as possible.
Most of what I know about astrology has been self taught via books and websites - I basically deconstructed my own chart. I also looked at patterns that I see in my chart and my life to see if I believe they are consistent or not. Astrology is a tool just like personality assessments and other tools, see if you can find some usefulness in it and discard whatever does not make sense.
  • Tabitha · 1 year ago
I receive my weekly Taurus horoscope every Sunday which I don't read too carefully - the more I obsess about its "predictions" the less they come true. It's not always applicable or true, I realize, but I like having that outline of sorts to start the week off with. At the end of the week, if I remember to I go back and review and see what's come true. There's usually one aspect that was somewhat right.

Once, it told me to be careful of finances as far as payroll was concerned, and sure enough, HR messed up my paycheck and had I not caught it in time, I would have been broke for 2 weeks. So there's SOME truth in it, but I wouldn't invest all of my logic or my actions in it.
  • Angela · 1 year ago
I'm not really influenced my astrology. Technically I'm a Gemini, but I near the cusp with Taurus. And very few attributes of either seem to fit me. I follow my horoscope in fashion magazines, but looking back on them after the month is over, very little of it came true. I'm more into my Angel oracle deck, and www.mysticgames.com has very good taro card readings.
  • Colette · 1 year ago
Although no particulair decision or choice of mine has been based soley on atrological influences, the fact that I am a definitive Pices colors everything. I read a daily horiscope and mentally note the suggestions etc. At the end of the day, it is fun for me to go back and read the horiscope again and see how everything played out.
  • Ellen · 1 year ago
Astrology has allowed me to familiarize myself with the tools in my toolkit so I can work (live) more effectively. It helped me to see my limitations and showed other ways to get from point A to point B.
I am a Pisces with a Scorpio moon (Sagittarius rising). I was hindered by my sensitivity and intensity until I learned what to do with them.
I don't usually follow my daily horoscope because it doesn't take my complete chart into account.
I do use the knowledge of sun signs to help in counseling my clients - I would work with a Leo much differently than I would a Taurus or another Pisces.

There were a couple of people posting with the name Kristin or a similar name so I decided to put the name of my blog next to my name to differentiate myself from the others. My mother and I had a coffeehouse that was nicknamed "The Goat" and that is what I named my blog. If you'd like to see my blog just click on my name.
    Thanks for asking!

I agree about the layer of richness it can add, at minimum by sparking discussion about our personalities and characteristics. People can always say, "No, I'm not like that at all," but even that is interesting information. And sometimes we can be wrong about ourselves too. I remember once saying that I'm not too particular and all of my siblings burst out laughing! Who knew?
  • Krystl · 1 year ago
Astrology hasn't influenced my life or decisions. I do enjoy reading about the different signs and musing about how accurate they often seem to be (I'm a SUCH a virgo!). I've never had a chart done, although I know people who have, both in the traditional style and in the Indian Jyotish style and have gotten a lot out of it. To me, it is just a lens - a tool for focusing on different aspects of your life. But what you get out of it, I think, is what is already inside of you. I can't get into daily/monthly horoscopes. They always just seem so general that they could fit anything/anyone. Although I do believe that the planets and stars must have some influence on us - on a daily basis, the powers of chaos are too strong for any sort of useful prediction.
  • Kristin (The Goat) · 1 year ago
I tell my husband he should listen to me - but goodness, the cars he buys never burn up. What a great story.
  • MoJo · 1 year ago
Yowza - someone's got a hate-on for the celestial influences! Kidding. Agreed - as with all vehicles for self-exploration, layers of misinterpretation and projection can become entangled with the empirical basis, but that holds true for most things. Also true - tools for insight and divination don't serve us well when they take the place of our free will and personal accountability. But, that said, the simple illustration of the effect of the moon on tides (and my computer when mercury is in retrograde ;-) are tangible evidence that these 'inarticulate balls of matter' are part of, and influence, our physical environment. Check the stats on peaks in emergency room activity during the full moon - our bodies are comprised for the mostpart of water...

I enjoy astrology and find it fun an interesting - in the same way i enjoy meditation, visualization, psychometric assessment tools, tarot cards, personality tests....all that fun stuff encountered on the many paths to 'who am i and why am i here?'. The power is in the question, or more specifically, the intent. The vehicles used to explore that are endless.

But yes - plotting your course, 'controlling' your future and being responsible are definitely gifts of humanity - as are the multitude of ways to explore this life.

Thanks for the provocative post...think I just got trolled...

I love to read my horoscope - and have my fortune told. I don't like to hear too much. There is so much that I love to be surprised with. My career and fortune is my obessession when it comes to astrology. My family (husband, kids, parents etc) is off limits for me when it comes to astrology. I don't want to know what is coming down the line for them, I will then obssess and worry constantly about everything that they do.

I use Astrology and have used it all my life. I once took a course just to help me understanding working with different personalities in business. For me and my friends it helps to understand why we do what we do. I am a Aquarius and that means free spirit to me.
And lots of independence! Have a great day everyone!

I've never really delved too deeply into astrology, so don't actually know what it means to be a Leo (born on the 8th of the 8th in '79), besides the fact that Leos like the spotlight -- and I can believe that...
  • Nancy "Scooter" McMoneagle · 1 year ago
I've been passionate about astrology since my introduction to it at age nine! Astrology is now my profession, one I love "going to work" at each day, as I help people realize their strengths, talents, past patterns, issues and future trends, all from their astrological charts (based on birth date, EXACT time and place of birth), along with what's coming up for them with the astrological "weather patterns" that are ahead. A glorious and profound guidance system, if ever there was one! Though my part of our website is in great need of an update, feel free to take a look at www.mceagle.com. As ancient philosopher Hermes Trismesgistus said, "As above, so below!"
  • MoJo · 1 year ago
Hi Nancy - I was looking at your site earlier and was wondering, would a good start be the Natal Chart? Unfortunately I've never been able to determine my exact time of birth - will it be as accurate using the 12 noon mark? And, last question - is this all done via snail mail, or can I phone/email with relevant contact and payment info?
  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
My Dearest (Astrologer) Scooter! I was hoping you'd chime in today! Allow me to use this shout out to you to say something to the whole community...

Astrology is a science that is vastly misunderstood. The cheesy horoscopes in newspapers don't do any favours to the incredible depth of it all. Thinking that "being a Gemini" can explain everything is like thinking that your hometown origin will explain everything about your personality. It's just not that simple. Anyone who is even remotely curious should have a session with a good astrologer to understand how penetrating and explanatory our interconnectedness with the planets can be. And again, it's not a crutch or a code to base your every decision on - it's a light that can lend some (amazing) clarity and grace.

    xo

  • Danielle LaPorte · 1 year ago
a good astrologer won't "predict" the future. It's not fortune telling (which I personally steer very clear of.) It's a perspective into your strengths.

Your natal chart is always Step One - as that gives the "blueprint" of You! Everything else is determined from it. These days I combine the natal chart and do a year's forecasting in the first session, which takes about 90 minutes during a phone session (I tape it for you).
The place to find your birth time is usually on your birth certificate, which you can get by contacting the Bureau of Statistics in the place where you were born. Make sure you ask for the LONG FORM with your birth time, as these days they're giving out abbreviated versions.
Sometimes people have baby books with the time noted, or there's a family Bible, or other such documents that might have it listed. Also, you find out clues about timing if there were any stories about how your mom missed a particular meal, or had to go to the hospital in the middle of the night you were born, etc.(aunts/uncles or older siblings sometimes remember these details if your mom's not around). If a client simply cannot find their birth time, then I go with a noon chart. The client calls me at a mutually agreed-upon time, and can pay via check or money order. If you'd like to know more, you can reach me directly at nmcmoneagle@nccwildblue.com. Thanks for your interest!

I’ve been studying and practicing astrology since I was 19 which makes it 40 years now! I started with LINDA GOODMAN’S SUNSIGNS and still recommend it altho’ I have many many more sophisticated current books.
I’ve taught astrology at night school; done hundreds of charts for friends and family and am now considering getting back into the world with it in my new West Coast city and combining it with Tarot. I feel it’s as ingrained in me as any philosophy or belief could be. I find it a beautiful hologram of one’s life but do not rely heavily on the predictive side of it. Jung, I believe, called astrology, the compilation of all psychology before psychology as we know it was born. There is the infinite point in the center of each chart, which I believe is the indefinable soul point of each person. Everything else can be charted, but this is ours alone to create ourselves our way. If you haven’t tried it, I hope you do. It’s fascinating! Oh yeah, two amazing books: MAKING THE GODS WORK FOR YOU by Caroline Casey and SECRETS FROM A STARGAZERS NOTEBOOK by Debbie Kempton-Smith. Brilliant and fun; I’ve met them both and they were so inspirational to me.

I get it! It's just that all that stuff goes wrong regardless! Once I discovered that it was just mercury in retrograde, then I quite pushing against it! It actually has those times be less traumatic for me than before I knew that was in play! I remember once completely stressing out about getting to the travel agent to pick up a ticket in time. When I remembered mercury in retrograde, I stopped on the street, started laughing, and a cab came around the corner. I made the place with minutes to spare, but was on the plane the next day. That's what I mean by "I'm glad to know." :)

I just had my natal astrology chart done. Found the astologer through a friend. He's old school, sends you your chart and a 90 minute tape with the reading. It affirmed much of what I know about myself, how I perceive and am perceived, and showed that for the most part I'm "living my horoscope". It also helped me to see and realize my potential and confirmed a sense I've lived with for a long time that I could/should be more focused on my own needs and dreams and less open to distraction in my work choices. I also had my son's chart done for his birthday as a form of career counselling. He's ready to make some changes and the chart gave him positive input about his strengths and guidance as to possible career paths.
  • Steve · 1 year ago
I'm so on Danielle's vibe here. It's simply another toolbox item to assist in my understandings and perspectives of how I roll! I'm a Capricorn to the core and like Carrie, it is hard for me not to dive in the deep end of Astrology...but doing this with everything (and some days I do!) can be messy and time consuming. So I try and do it in bits. I Try!

I guess for me, it helps set a tone and a base. Getting out in the real world and interacting with all the different types of people and their workings promote the asking of questions - the best gift whether your life method is in the form of the hunt, the journey or old fashion fate.

Growth, happiness and clarity are my personal goals and with my base and the answers to the questions that are posed, I am able to conclude on what works for me.

Astrology is part of my base.

    Mr. Creative Faith!

Yes, the fish is the last to know that it swims in water, as the Chinese say. :-) There's so much more to your astrological chart though than just your sun sign. It's pretty complicated stuff, and I would love to learn more about it and have a real natal chart done by someone that can interpret it correctly. But basically, because there are rising signs, moon signs, and all the other positions of the planetary bodies at the time and place you were born, one simple sun sign description is not enough to encompass a whole person. The more you know, the more you want to know!

I am a Gemini with a lot of Aquarius and Sag influences. I do look at horoscopes and have had a chart done once in a while, but nothing serious to guide my life by. I just like to see what influences there are that I should take notice of. But I absolutely believe in MERCURY IN RETROGRADE! If you don't know about this, Google it and make sure you do what you need to do (or not do) during those weeks, until Mercury goes direct again. Mercury is Gemini's planet, so I pay attention. When I've warned people about this timing, when they are going on trips, they have pooh poohed it and then I've recieved calls and e-mails while they were away, to tell me how right I was. So check it out and plan accordingly. You will lose cell phones, computers break down, planes get delayed, reservations get lost, etc. So, it's about being extremely meticulous and double checking everything to do with communications (Mercury).

Do you have a thick 'mane' of hair? Do you need to be right? Are you a leader?
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
If your rising sign is Aquarius, it will be a very strong influence. Here are a few of the things I know of Aquarians: Independent, Individualist & Free Spirit, Humanitarian, Young at heart and in looks for a long time, can be 'cool' or distant and seemingly dispassionate.
  • Linda Borland-Fitzgerald · 1 year ago
Oh yes... Mercury in Retrograde. I just posted some information about that, for those unfamiliar. Those who looked at me askance when I warned them prior to their trips, no longer do so and even ask me Mercury's schedule when they plan a vacation, etc.

On the contrary, I do not have hate for the celestial influences, I used to work for an astro-physicist at Stanford. I am quite aware of the influences of the celestial bodies. And the fact we are made up of the elements found in those celestial bodies. ;D

I was not trolling, thank you, I was merely answering the question based on my Christian beliefs to worship my Creator and not His creations and the proof science gives of what goes on in the universe. Not on how someone else commented.

If people want to believe in astrology etc. that is their business, I was not and do not criticize anyone's beliefs. I have just had more than Biblical and scientific proof by discovering too many dead astrologers and tarot card readers in New Orleans after Katrina to ever believe in it.

Thank you for your consideration of my initial post.

I definitely relate to all the traits of my sign "Gemini", however I never read a horoscope, I believe in fate.

Just double check your reservations (plane and hotel) before you go. Hang on tight to your communications paraphernalia (cell, laptop, blackberry). Relax and don't 'resist' and all should go well. Oh, and most importantly, don't sign contracts during this period. Stall!! Have a wonderful trip and next time, you will know to book around MIR times.
    Cheers.. Linda

Well put. I especially like these 2 combos of words......".added a layer of richness and texture" and "like to solve the puzzles of people" you are a gal after my own heart. There are many ways out there in the big wide world to gather information and insights. Then I just intuitively mix and match the way my inner voice is directing me at the time.

I don't do hard core astrology but I read a lot about it. It has helped me understand my personality traits and how to use the positive ones to enrich my life and daily people dealings while being more conscious in tempering the other characteristics that may throw people off. I have a high sense of self awareness and astrology definitely contributes in my introspections.

You may want to check-out your oriental astrology sign. I'm a Virgo - Dragon and the western and oriental characterizations are really interesting! :)

I love astrology! I find it empowering learning about my own sign and fascinating learning about others. To answer the question, I allow astrology to influence the relationships in my life most of all. I'm a bit embarrassed to say mostly romantic ones (I'm a Scorpio, so I steer clear of Geminis in the romance dept). I'm a big fan of Linda Goodman's book "Sun Signs". While comically out of date, I find it holds great insight into others, with info on each sign, in relation to you: a boss, employee, child, etc...
Today's Q&A has inspired me to educate myself more on the subject, to perhaps apply this knowledge to different areas of my life, or seek out a professional reading. thanks!

oh, i reflect my cusp gemini chart entirely, and my boyfriend is the consummate leo. astrology has allowed me to recognise various innate tendencies and boundaries in people - in their contexts. like, i can think my boyfriend is disrespectfully slow and tardy or i can accept he's a languidly moving leo. either way, there's nothing i could do to give him my air of frenzy; his pace has nothing to with me.

I am a Christian Leo. I think I became one when my Dad gave me a Leo gold charm as my Catholic confirmation present: the Italians very fond of both Jesus and Astrology it seems. I find issues of faith provocative, and being the lioness, I do like to talk about me me me. So...here goes. For me, astrology has a breakdown of the personalities that I attribute more to the season in which a child is born. It's too accurate to ignore. It's not so much a hocus pocus, but a nature thing. Are you nurtured at the breast in the blistering heat of August, or in the cool of the May day or the freezing nights of November? It has to have some sort of influence on how we operate in the world - our first introduction to it. No?

I seem to collect cancers and aries in my life. The cancers I love and get along with (because they adore and admire me, so why wouldn't I?) They are sunny and loving and gentle, and they are born in the most beautiful time of the year. And the Aries, born in crisp spring, I love because they challenge me, but God, are they ever pains in the royal feline asses. Aries. Oh, so provocative. Give it a rest, you and your belt. Break someone else's ice, will ya? You and your spring run off.

I do think about astrology when I plan out my family and when trying to get pregnant, admittedly, I do skip over anything that would land me with anything CLOSE to an aries. I shoot for cancer. What does this mean? It means my husband has to be "quick draw McGraw" until October.

So glad! Most Aquarians we know really get into astrology once they learn about it -- it helps explain why you feel so different from everyone!

Wow, thanks! We're honored to be members. I'm married to a Taurus, so I'm sure that helps me hone my expertise for your sign!

I agree totally (am a day late and a dollar short here) with Rachel. And I believe truly that because you can not see something does not mean it does not exist. I think for anyone to say that astrology is bunkum or hocus pocus without thoughtful research and analysis upon which to base that decision - is a poorer person for that opinion.

I am an Aries, the Ram - and a shepherdess as well, so go figure :>

Although astrology is entertaining, it must be pointed out that the celestial objects are now in a different location than they were back when Astrology was invented. I was born in August (leo), but the stars up above were "off" by a month. Doesn't that make me a Virgo, or even a Libra? Hmmm.
