There are many types of leaders, but to me the best ones believe in the best of people and inspire and empower those around them to indeed become the best versions of themselves. They connect us to a larger shared vision and call us to action.

a good leader is someone who is honest, has no judgment of others, leads from the heart, is without ego and doesn't have self fulfilling agendas.... while also being inspiring to those who need the guidance... someone who is a facilitator for growth.

Good leadership creates an environment of plenty by creating opportunity for everyone. Good leadership is intelligent, thoughtful, articulate and open. Good leadership is principled. Good leadership creates an environment in which respectful debate it encouraged and in which all participants are safe to express their opinions. Good leadership inspires.

My biggest frustration with politicians is their unwillingness to make decisions. The culture of responding to opinion polls or conducting a referendum on a difficult issue is actually anti-democratic. Democracy is about electing leaders we trust to make decisions that may not pass the populist gut reaction / instant gratification test, but are good for the long term.

True leaders work for justice. They understand that the personal is political, that they can only lead by being people worthy of being followed, that there's no faking it, no tricks, no methods. Just honesty, teamwork, and, hopefully, a little bigger pie to be shared at the end of the day.

Jim Collins (in Good To Great) talks about what he calls Level 5 Types leaders - they are humble, their method of operation is hugely based on LISTENING, they are not necessarily charismatic, they have the courage to make tough calls. They balance personal humility with will.

Good leadership creates an environment for the higher good of all he /she leads. By nature, this requires a leader to be intune with those who are led, often requiring sacrifice of ones own personal comfort, wants and aims. A good leader - a fabulous leader, knows that some times what is over all best for every one may not necessarily be the most favorable for a single individual or group, and chooses the whole rather than the part. This same leader also knows that what works for one can completely undo another but that also what lifts one will lift all. The best leadership is tolerant , patient, seeks wisdom from a higher source, and expects those whom are led to be self-principled, self-governed, and self-responsible. My grandmother taught this to me.

Servant Leadership also resonates very very strongly with me. What made it so fascinating and important to my view of leadership is the idea that the leader is actually servant first. It was a total lightbulb moment when I realized that I could do my best work in serving and helping others and have that be a form of leadership. I was always afraid of the idea of leadership before I read about Servant Leadership.

A good leader listens more than speaks. Serves the majority, not themselves. They provide encouragement when others falter. They defend the weak and protect those who cannot protect themselves. A good leader drives others to solutions and actions which benefit human kind. They set the example for morality, integrity, and common sense. They do these things without the need for a pat on the back or attention to their actions.

I had a Director once who was helping me to be a better leader/ manager and his guidance was this:
a good leader doesn't stand in a field of stones and point to the diamond, a good leader walks with his team and helps them to find their own route (as a team) to the diamond and defends the team along the way.

Good leadership is when the leader inspires others to push their limits and stretch beyond what they would normally do. A good leader makes others want to be like them. I've seen bad leaders during my career that wrecked an organization. I've also seen amazing leaders both in the work world and during my time in college.
