I love this article! Despite seeing so many articles about what to buy, I found this one very informative. Now I will no longer break the bank on unnecessary makeup. Thanks for the info!

Very interesting with lots of good tips - especially the part about the lip/eye pencils all coming from Germany - I'll be on the lookout for that now!

Vitamin C in face creams isn't usually effective. Unfortunately, most moisturisers tend to use types of vitamin C that simply evaporate upon application. Deceptive and unfortunate. In order to be rid of free radicals IN the skin, the Vitamin C has to be a stabilized version that's built to penetrate the skin's outer layer. The latest version of Vitamin C built for face creams is Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate.

This article is great- and it's tried and true. Being a professional in the beauty industry I was curious at what you guys thought about it all- and you have all nailed it on the head. :) It is very true- the best form of anti aging is in your bottle of sunscreen- it's never too late to start. You may not have that creamy skin when you older because you spent your younger years sun bathing- but you will save your skin from more harmful damage in the furture. Skin cancer is deadly- don't take it lightly. :)
i spend the most on my foundation- I get color matched often- your coloring changes with the seasons- as well as your skins texture. YOu may be drier and oiler in different times of the year. Make sure you have the foundation that best suit your skin tone. Not what you girlfriend just bought- even though its great for her- it may not be for you. Especially if your going to spend more money on it- mak sure it's right. :)

sorry- bit of a tangent- love the article- hits my heart strings and my passions.

As a consumer with sensitive skin, I have to disagree. Most of the higher-end cosmetics and skin care companies use better (and therefore more expensive) ingredients in their products. And yes, there are soem that try to get away with using cheap ingredients and stilltry and charge you a higher price (hello Lancome!). There are certain ingredients that dermatologists recommend avoiding, including fragrance, sulfates, mineral oil, lanolin, etc. You really have to read , read, read to know what you are buying. Unfortunately, better quality ingredients do cost more... other examples: organic food and olive oil (vs. trans fats). If you have sensitive skin, you know what I', talking about. If you don't, lucky you!

RosIe, it is definitely possible to get fragrance-free, sensitive skin products that are affordable although you probably won't find them at a drugstore, (I have sensitve skin also and can speak as a fellow sufferer.) Check your nearest health food store for brands like Burt's Bees, Aveeno, Kiss My Face, Earth Therapeutics and St. Ives. In addition, most cosmetic companies are no longer using sulfates, lanolin and mineral oil since there are so many new, more effective ingredients performing the same functions.

WOW!! Very helpful article!! I did not know about the pencils all being of equal quality! And what a great way of thinking - being a bit more indulgent when it comes to my lipstick! Right, I do pull it out many times a day to reapply, why not let it be a self-indulgent ritual?? I'm worth it!

On moisturiser, I found that spending slightly more on a product with retin-a really helped my skin. i use neutrogena naturally even night cream, which is the ONLY thing in my price range that i have found to improve the texture of my skin. i have very large pores and the cream helps to make my skin seem smoother. it also helps to even out my skin tone (although I have freckles, so it cant make that much difference).

my only day time sunscreen gripe is that all the high spf's (im a red head) are really sticky and heavy. aaargh!!

This article reminded me about my quest for the perfect eye cream. . . I searched high and low for a cream that would diminish my dark circles. After buying products from all ends of the price spectrum, I landed on Neutrogena's Radiance Boost Eye Cream. Who would have thought a $12 tube of eye cream would work better than a $100 jar?
