Very helpful for new parents and I always enjoy reading about the books other mothers recommend. I am the author of a baby books guide website and would love to add your list of books to my site - would that be Ok?
I like the way you say you don't like manuals but memiors - I relate to this myself.
Carmen

Re: Five Best Pregnancy and Baby Books Actually Read by a Mother

This guides are very useful for the moms, i will let my wife read about this content, i think the The Pregnant Woman’s Comfort Book suites to my wife because my wife is pregnant.

Re: Five Best Pregnancy and Baby Books Actually Read by a Mother

Great list! I also read 7 baby books as a kick off to motherhood. The Baby Whisperer was my favorite. If I have baby number two, I'll have to read your top five! Thanks for the review. I wish it had been available at the time my son was born! Even now that he is much older it is still a wonderful book on parenting.

Re: Five Best Pregnancy and Baby Books Actually Read by a Mother

Thanks, Daniel. Yep, there was one particular - hugely popular - book that I used to read in bed and then worry that Harry wasn't reaching his "milestones". You don't need that kind of pressure, really!

Re: Five Best Pregnancy and Baby Books Actually Read by a Mother

I love that one too, DLR (and all Lamott's books). In fact I had it on the list originally and I pretty much wrote the same as you: "It saved my life because it helped me realize that what I was feeling didn't mean I was crazy." :)

Also Madeleine's World: a Biography of a Three Year Old by Brian Hall is wonderful and fascinating.

Re: Five Best Pregnancy and Baby Books Actually Read by a Mother

I love this list, mostly because the books are of the "stay sane, don't panic" variety. So many baby and parenting books are nothing more than a rigid and unworkable list of instructions, that make parents demoralized when their baby doesn't cooperate with the book. The best thing to remember is always that all babies are different and your instincts are almost always right...

Re: Five Best Pregnancy and Baby Books Actually Read by a Mother

A book that I read over and over during my first year of motherhood and have read over and over in my second "first" year of motherhood with our second child is Anne Lamott's Operating Instructions. It's a journal of her son's first year and it is mostly hilarious, completely relatable and one of the most honest and realistic portraits of what can be a very harrowing first year with a new baby. I give it to anyone I know who is pregnant. It saved my life because it helped me realize that what I was feeling didn't mean I was crazy.
