That's really the point, yeah? Time together, however it happens. I realize now (not having my Mom) that the TIME and the fellowship was what I loved. Tree be hanged! :)
Although, Rick, I love your ideas for creative trees! After I put up our ultra-traditional version this year, I keep eyeballing it and realizing it just isn't me. I'm not ultra-traditional about anything anymore (hippie husband has gotten to me), and what I really want to recreate is just togetherness and fun and enjoying the season. So next year we'll probably re-interpret "Christmas tree" to something that fits our family now.

Re: Finding the True Meaning of Holiday Traditions

My wife and I have developed a great tradition of creating trees out of tropical plants when we lived in Africa, downed limbs after a tremendous windstorm in Vancouver, even yarn one year. This year we're eyeballing an odd potted plant we inherited with this new house. Like you said, the joy is in the tradition, and in the creation. The fun is in the reaction of our Christmas visitors...

Re: Finding the True Meaning of Holiday Traditions

I'm not Christian, but I have a Christmas tradition: every year on Christmas eve, I drive around the city with my dad looking at all the Christmas lights, listening to Fireside Al on the radio, and enjoying each other's company. Then we go find a place that's open and selling donuts (much easier now than 15 years ago, I assure you) and have a snack.

Every year that I can remember, we've done this. It's not really about the driving or the radio program or the donuts, it's about spending time with my dad. And I hope that we do it every year until he dies, a long, long time in the future.
