Carrie and Danielle: A Gift that Needs No Return Receipt: Sponsoring a Child

  • Liz Allen · 11 months ago
Thank you for posting this much needed sponsorship. We travel to developing countries to empower artisans with sustainable income for their fine handcrafts through ExoticWorldGifts.com. We see so many children left abandoned, not able to get education, and much worse. So, please continue creating these opportunities for people to make a difference.

Thanks for letting me know about ExoticWorldGifts.com, Liz.

I also just learned about kiva.org. Kiva is a person-to-person micro-lending website that allows individuals to contribute to entrepreneurs in the developing world. What an amazing way to empower families and communities.

When evaluating where to invest your well-intentioned dollars, it's important to investigate how the money is used. What percentage goes to administration, and more importantly, what do they classify as "Administration?" World Vision, for example, puts extensive money into television marketing, but they call that "program", not admin. What it means is that much of your donation goes to ads instead of to your child.

One more group to add to your list is the African Canadian Continuing Education Society (www.acceskenya.org). When you sponsor a university student in Kenya through them, 100% of your funds go directly to that scholarship program - all their admin costs are covered by government grants and board donations. Disclaimer - until last summer, I was their Executive Director, so I am a bit biased...

Regardless of which organization ends up feeling right for you, huge kudos to this kind of other-centred giving. It is very rewarding for us, and makes a huge difference in so many lives overseas.

Many orphanage needs sponsors, of course they can't afford all of the bills in foods, clothes, and even medicine. Many orphan doesn't even saw what school looks like.. So parents are really needed, those who are unfortunate couple to have a child especially a bi-couple.

Good job..Do more on the job like this which helps the poor children..I can see many children in the world are not educated, abandoned, handicapped etc..So we should take care of them. It is a wonderful post. I bookmarked this one. Keep going.

There are lots of children who badly needs help, some of them are abandoned by their parents others are orphan and sometimes had been abused by their parents, these poor children want to live normal just like any other child.
